1 Volume 41, #9 September, 2009 President s Message I first would like to start out by thanking everyone for your cards, thoughts and prayers, it meant a lot to my family and myself. On to brighter days. Don t forget September 13 th is our annual club picnic at Halleck Park in Papillion. Be sure and bring your Hubley for a little racing fun. It should be a good time. If you have not signed up, please call Bob McKinney and let him know how many are coming, as he is bringing the meat Please call before September 10 th. The September 17 th dine out will be at Jason s Deli at 70 th and Dodge, at 7:00pm, hope to see you there. Until next time Meadowlarks. Judy Beckman Another Chance to Display Our Cars We were approached during the Seldin Display to provide cars for a Listeners Appreciation Party for the Spirit Catholic Radio Station. The station is a nonprofit organization, so it does not have the funds that Seldin does. However it is a good chance for us to display our cars and get some good publicity for the club. The station is located in the Adoremus Catholic Bookstore in the Fredrick Square in the shopping center next to ShopKo on the west side of 84 th St. just south of Center St. A sign up sheet will be available at the meeting. Secondly I would like to apologize for a mistake I made on the Seldin Display write up. We did have 24 cars displayed, but I only listed 23 members. I inadvertently forgot to mention Roger Olson, one of our outstanding members that are always quick to help out. Howard Denker 1

If you have anything interesting to show please bring it along. Annual Picnic celebrating Grandparents Day The board decided that we would invite all our members children and grandchildren and great-grandchildren (if you have them). Also, our parents and grandparents are invited. This should be a fun day of good food and games. We will try out the renovated Hubley track, so bring your Hubley, if you have one, or any kind of model race vehicle like a Pinewood Derby Car. Anything up to 3 ½ inches wide. 4 September 24 September 27 Car display We will be displaying our cars at 84 th & Hascal. Please see Howard s note on the front page. Board meeting Please everyone note that the board meeting will be held at the Beckman s. September 26 International Model A Day We are planning to have a tour to celebrate this special day. The original plan was to have a sneak peek at the Smorgasbord Tour that will be part of our Regional Meet next year, but it does not seem to be quite ready yet. (Don t worry it will be ready for the meet next year.) We do need to do something to celebrate International Model A Day. Please think about what we could do that would bring out the most Meadowlarks and their Model As possible. Bring your ideas to the meeting or, if you cannot attend, call Don ( ) prior to the meeting to tell him your ideas. According to the MAFCA web site, this day was selected because it coincides with Henry Ford's trip to Europe in Sept to internationalize the Model "A" Ford by establishing Ford plants in Dagenham, England, Rotterdam, Holland, and Cologne, Germany. It also is most likely to be good weather in both the northern and southern hemisphere. Let s hope it is good weather for us! October 4th Tour to Tekamah, Nebraska picnic + winery (second try) We got rained out last time, so we are hoping for a great fall day this time. Plans are to leave Cubby s Quick Stop (HWY36 & HWY75) at 1 PM. We will travel north on HWY 75 and eat lunch at the city park on the north end of Tekamah. Then, we will venture out to the Silver Hills Vineyards & Winery ( There is a bit of gravel road to get to the winery. Bring your own picnic lunch. If you plan to attend, please sign up at the meeting or call Don Graves ( ) by Oct. 1.

5 Knapps & McKinneys met up by chance in Skagway, Alaska What are the chances that 2 Meadowlark couples, one on a cruise ship and one in a pickup RV, would be in exactly the same town in Alaska on the same day and run into each other? Not too high, probably. Kind of like winning the lottery. But, it happened. Knapps have been touring Alaska for 3 ½ months in their pickup RV. McKinneys were on a two-week cruise. When McKinneys left, we told them to say hello to the Knapps (and, of course, Sarah Palin). They didn t run into Sarah, but they did run into the Knapps! Dale Freyer got out of the hospital in the morning and came to the August meeting in the evening! We didn t know it at the meeting, but afterward found out that Dale had been in the hospital for 3 days to be treated for Atrial Fibrillation. He reports that he is doing OK now, as long as he takes his pills. Frank Cooper -- has been hospitalized for the last 3 weeks in the Blair Hospital and Methodist Hospital in Omaha. Madeline reports that he is currently in Methodist and she does not think that he would enjoy visitors at this time. The club has sent a card, but he might enjoy more cards. We think it is probably best to send cards to his home (see the roster) and Madeline can deliver them to him when she visits. Bob & Trish Rand have stayed in Missouri longer than they had planned because their son, who lives there, had a stroke. They are helping to care for their grandchildren while the son is being treated. Our prayers for the Rands and their son.

6 In Memoriam -- Fred Castan Fred & Joyce Castan were Meadowlark members from 1967 until Their Model A was an original 1929 Steel Back Fordor Sedan. Most any club function saw the Castans having fun along with the rest of us. The photo at the right shows Fred stirring the bean pot at a club picnic around Fred served as a Board Member in The Castans remained active members until 1981 when Fred sold the original Fordor during a weak moment. Fred often said he regretted the sale and tried to buy back his old original friend, but he was never able to get it back. His interest turned toward a 1949 Mercury convertible. What a beauty, when the restoration was completed! Fortunately for us, we got to see the Castans and their Mercury at several of our Ford Shows. During the last several years, Fred s health developed problems and, unfortunately, he passed away this past weekend. Our condolences to Joyce and the rest of the family. Those of us who knew the Castans can remember some real fun Model A times and that friendly couple who drove around in that good-looking black Mercury convertible. Got slightly dusty looking for those covered bridges.
