4 Epps Air Facility Report By Fred Lindquist On a cool, overcast, moisture laden weekday morning, a number of regional group members assembled for the club s monthly tour. Promptly, at 9:31 A.M. the group turned unto Clairmont Rd. during a break in the traffic and drove directly to the Epps Air Facility at Peachtree Dekalb Airport (PDK). There was parking reserved for the club. Pat Epps met the group and he entertained them with many stories about flying episodes in his career. Pat led the group through the offices and several hangers with many opportunities to see aircraft under repair along with touring the interior of some. One noteworthy aircraft was a replica of his father s 1907 plane, not much more than a large kite with an engine and propeller. The group was then led to a conference room where Pat and Richard Taylor gave a slide presentation of their thirteen year effort to remove a WWII P- 38 fighter from under 250 of ice on Greenland. This was a terrific story and their reciting of the various incidents kept the group in stitches. This performance was a throwback to a vaudeville routine and the group delighted in it. The tour of the facilities and the presentation took about 2 ½ hours. The group then retired to the Downwind Restaurant next to the Epps facility for lunch where Pat Epps and Richard Taylor joined the group. The hamburgers were outstanding and the company and conversation could not be beat. At the conclusion, Pat invited the club to come back in June for the annual open house that he hosts there. Everyone headed home with a smile as this was a memorable tour. There were 28 participants in the tour and Jay Friedman was the only member brave enough to drive his 1932 phaeton in the weather. Participants: Doug & Elizabeth Hollandsworth Doug & Cindy Smith Bert & Loraine Steele Janice & Burns Cox Joe & Jean Smith David & Becci Jumper guest Opal Fernadez Bob & Mary Ann Padovano Fred & Katie Lindquist Jerry & Cheryl Reichel guest Tracy Reichel Bob Butler Larry Tanner Ken Wells Jay Friedman Jimmy Dorsey Lamar Hart Joe Huggins guest Bill Morrison

8 Georgia Regional Group 24 Early Ford V8 Club of America Board of Directors Meeting Minutes: January 22, 2008 ATTENDANCE. Officers and directors present: Morris Bailey, Mark Burt, James Dorsey, Lamar Hart, David Jumper, Jerry McIntosh, Bob Padovano Joe Smith, Larry Tanner and Rick Wilson. Guests present: Burns Cox, Marty Ledbetter, Jerry Reichel, Bert Steele and Harold Thompson. BUSINESS. The regularly scheduled meeting of the Board of Directors was held on January 22, 2008, at Burns Cox garage. 1. President Lamar Hart opened the meeting and asked all present to introduce themselves and give a brief description of their club involvement. 2. President Hart announced the resignation of Board Member, Dick Anderson. Due to unforeseen increases in business obligations, Mr. Anderson found it necessary to resign from the Board. Some discussion was held as to the implications of decreasing the number of Board members which will be covered later in the meeting. 3. President Hart discussed his ongoing goals for 2008 and for the future for Regional Group 24. Briefly, these were stated as: * Incorporation of the Board of Directors and the Club for legal protection. * Increased use of the internet and for dissemination of information and Club publications. * Development of a Club website which is up and running to some extent. These will be discussed at greater length later in the meeting. 4. President Hart raised the need for the appointment of a Hospitality Chairman for the Valentine s Dinner, Annual Picnic and Christmas Party. No volunteers stepped forward and at the present time the events will be handled on an individual basis. Jerry McIntosh will coordinate the Valentine s Dinner and David Jumper agreed to work with other Club members on the Christmas Party. 5. A printed copy of the projected calendar of events for 2008 was circulated to all members and guests and was followed by a discussion of events. 6. The first order of new business followed from President Hart s discussion of the need for increasing membership. Considerable discussion followed. Jerry McIntosh indicated that the expansion and development of the website could serve to open up a new and much younger segment of the collector car population and, thus, serve to increase membership. Morris Bailey reminded the group of the success of methods used in the past by using telephone follow-ups for anyone who does not renew their membership. Jimmy Dorsey discussed the need to be more tolerant of Fords that have been modified beyond the usual bounds of the Club standards. Joe Smith also added that the Georgia Street Rod Association has over 600 members in this area and many of these cars include flat head powered Fords. Nonetheless, they would not meet the usual standards of the National Group but might

9 have considerable shared interests with those of us in the Club. Jerry Reichel and Jimmy Dorsey discussed the value of a handout flyer or business card that could be distributed to car shows or other car events containing information about the Club and a member s name on the outside for further follow-up. Bob Padovano discussed the need for one membership fee that would encompass both national and local dues. He also presented his idea of trying to interest young automotive enthusiasts, possibly from vocational/technical school levels who could be asked to judge the quality of old Fords at shows and cruise-ins using their own standards and tastes as a means of increasing their interest in this model. Visitor Bert Steele suggested the possibility of a retention committee to talk with members who do not renew their membership to identify their reasons for leaving the Club. He also proposed the possibility of offering new memberships a reduced dues incentive both for the new member and for the person responsible for bringing them into the Club. After much discussion, a motion was made by David Jumper to establish a Membership Committee. This was seconded by Jimmy Dorsey and passed unanimously. A follow-up motion was made for budgeting this committee with up to $ for purposes of developing brochures and handouts that could be made available. This was seconded by Joe Smith and passed unanimously. Jerry McIntosh proposed that we should not rely on the good will of club members to develop the website and should consider allocating some of the funding for membership development to improving the website. This was discussed as one other possible use of the funds. 7. National Club Vice President Jerry Reichel noted that 2009 will be the fortieth anniversary of our local club. He proposed the idea of taking some of our reserved cash to hold a particularly nice event for club members to celebrate the fortieth anniversary. He discussed the possibility of a chartered tour to the Coker Museum in Chattanooga or to Charlotte for some of the automotive activities that are there. This was taken under advisement for future discussions. 8. Parliamentarian Harold Thompson indicated several areas where by-laws changes of the local chapter would be required to bring us in line with National Club by-laws. He notes that the National Club now allows dues to be payable any time of the year which is at odds with our bylaws. Further discussion of the size of the Board of Directors followed with a proposal for seven members. Much discussion followed and this idea was not supported due to the general belief that increased numbers on the Board spread the work out more equitably. Parliamentarian Thompson also mentioned the idea of reducing the Nominating Committee to four or five members. He also mentioned that it was the responsibility of the Club Secretary to submit the names of officers to the National Group by February 1st and a roster of all members by June 1st of each year. Discussion followed over a number of these points. It was decided that a subsequent meeting of the Board of Directors would address some of these points in more detail. The next monthly Club meeting will be held on February 5th at Dick Anderson s automotive facility. There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned at 9:30 p.m. Respectfully submitted, Jerry McIntosh
