1 NEWSLETTER FEBRUARY, 2011 HANGAR DANCE SATURDAY MARCH 19th Saturday, March 19, 2011 the Candler Field Museum will host a Hangar Dance to benefit the museum. The theme for the dance will be the 1940 s era with an emphasis on WWII. The Modernaires, an 18 piece orchestra from the Atlanta area, will provide 1930 s and 1940 s music. You are encouraged to dress in period attire, but it is certainly not required. Even if you are not a dancer, please come and simply enjoy the music and fellowship. It will be a fun evening for all.

2 A silent auction will be held throughout the event and there will be live auctions periodically throughout the evening. In addition, a very special dance team will perform during the show. The event begins with a social gathering at 6:30 and the orchestra will play from 7 PM until 10 PM. Heavy appetizers and desserts will be served along with a cash bar. Tickets are $45 per person and all proceeds go toward building the Doug Davis Hangar. Candler Field Museum is a nonprofit organization. All donations are tax deductible. 3 EAA GRASSROOT'S TOUR We are very privileged to have the new EAA President, Mr. Rod Hightower, visit Candler Field Museum on his EAA Grassroot's Tour. The event will be held on Tuesday evening, April 5th at Candler Field Museum. Social hour begins at 6:30 PM and the presentation at 7:30 PM. 4 FLABOB NEWS (Flabob Airport is our sister airport located in Riverside, CA. They are also developing an antique airfield with activities similar to Peach State Aerodrome. We publish a story concerning their operation with each newsletter.) Flabob s Biplane Factory By Jon Goldenbaum Mark Lightsey s Aerocraftsman restoration shop ( at Flabob is going great guns, with no less than three biplanes nearing completion at once. In 2010, Mark has had a great year building airplanes culminating in flying the Caudron C-460 Thompson Trophy racer to Oshkosh where among other trophies it won the trampled grass award in front of the Vintage Red Barn, followed by flying his Hatz biplane to the AAA fly-in at Blakesburg where it won the Best Hatz award. Project One is Jerry Barto s Cabin Waco YKS-7 which is undergoing a complete ground up restoration. Waco s are notorious for being built one at stick at a time, this one is no exception. Bill Hill and Tony Furukawa have pieced together spectacular new woodwork; the results are so pretty they are a shame to cover. The Cabin Waco is scheduled to make Oshkosh this year; should be a real show stopper.

5 Project Two is Richard Zeiler s Travel Air D-4D. This beauty sports a spectacular paint job laid out and painted by Flabob fabric and paint artisan Nando Mendoza. Named the Sky Siren this will soon be one of the most unusual and beautiful antiques flying. Project Three is Ron Alexander s YMF-5. This new Waco was number three off the Waco Classic assembly line in Battle Creek, Michigan. Built in 1986 this Waco has been giving rides from New Hampshire to Hawaii, and now serves as Ron s primary ride aircraft at Peach State Airdrome in Williamson, GA. With the help of Hualdo and Nando Mendoza, David Browning, and Don Newman, Mark hopes to have the Waco recovered and painted in time for Sun n Fun this year. PIETENPOL PROJECT UPDATE Harold Spivey and Rich Woodcock have been working diligently on our Pietenpol project. The Model A engine block has been installed along with the radiator. When completed, the airplane will hang from the museum ceiling. STEARMAN FLIES AGAIN

6 In December, 2009, Candler Field Museum member Greg Blosser flew his Stearman into Peach State Aerodrome and parked it in front of David Harwell's Barnstormer's Workshop. Greg had flown the airplane for a number of hours but he the Stearman needed to be rebuilt. David and his crew began work on the airplane nearly a year ago and flew the newly restored airplane this past month. Here are the before and after pictures. Greg's Stearman before the restoration.

8 BARNSTORMER'S GRILL HAS NEW MENU Barnstormer's Grill has a new menu. You will find a number of new items. Please stop by and enjoy a meal with the friendly staff and take a look at the menu. You will find the food and service to be great. Come and enjoy a pleasant experience. The Grill is normally closed on Mondays but will be open on Valentine's Day, Monday February 14th. Ms. Remonia Pait, greeter at Barnstormer's Grill, is organizing an old fashioned, time honored yard sale. It will be held at the Candler Field Museum and all proceeds will go to benefit the museum. Remonia has enlisted the help of the Barnstormer's crew to assist in gathering and selling the items.
