Vickers November Meeting Information The November Meeting will be the last meeting for The Christmas Party will be held Monday, 2nd December at 7pm Visiting Society in November The Australian Paphiopedilum Society Aspley Orchid Society The Queensland Orchid Society Inc. founded on Wednesday, 24 th January 1934 Members who contribute to this Bulletin endeavor to assure the reliability of its contents. Any cultural advice provided is a guide only and may not suit individual growers. It is the responsibility of the individual to validate such advice before applying suggested methods. The Society welcomes potential members to come to the general meetings as our guests, and advises those wishing to join us, that subscription fees (in Australian Dollars) are $20 for a single, $25 for a family from 1st January $10 for a single, $12.50 for a family from 1st July Other Orchid Societies interested in affiliating with us are advised that Society Affiliation is $30 Payable on the 1st January each year.

2 QUEENSLAND ORCHID SOCIETY INC. GENERAL MEETING Red Hill Sports Club, 22 Fulcher Road, Red Hill Minutes Monday, 14 th October, 2013 The President, Reg Illingworth, declared the meeting open at 8.02pm and welcomed the members and people from other Societies. The Judges at this meeting were Barry Kable, Eric Locke, Les Vickers, John Rooks & Athol Rosenberg Ann Kable acted as steward and Pam Price took care of the benching results. Apologies: As per the attendance book. Raffle: Reg announced details of the raffle for the evening and prompted members to obtain their tickets. Raffle prizes were later presented. Correspondence: Members were advised that the Committee had attended to all routine correspondence. The Guest Societies attending this evening were Southport & District and Ipswich Orchid Society. The President of Southport & District, Mr. Ern Finnis said that Southport always take care of their new members, having two workshops each year, these workshops attract new growers. They have approx. 100 Members and average about 50 members each meeting. The Members are a Happy Group and get on very well. They also have a Winter show. Mr. Ron Grenke the President of the Ipswich Orchid Society said their Society is a strong growing Society with Members, they have a good team of workers, have regular bus trips and other functions. They now have a very good venue for their Annual Show, which consists of Orchids, Bromeliads and Fern & Foliage. This is an Open Show. Financial Report: The Treasurer, Nick Woolley, presented the financial report for the month of September,2013 and moved acceptance. The report was seconded by Gordon Grant. The treasurer s report for September was on the notice table for Members to check. Notice of Society shows, Schedules, Newsletters and other sundry notices were also on the notice table. Guest Speaker: The Guest Speaker for this evening was our Computer Site composer, SoundEagle, Khai Wei, who explained in detail the procedures of the QOS Site. Supper was then served. Thank you to Margaret Horsey and Val Marsden for the excellent supper. After supper Nick drew out some raffle tickets, the winners each won a well grown orchid plant or other. Thank you to the raffle ticket seller, Marie McCubbin. Plants Tabled The First Prize winner of Judges Choice in Hybrid Orchid was Les Vickers with Paph. Saint Swithin Sunnybank The First Prize winner of Judges Choice in Species was Helen & Charlie Edwards with Den. thyrsiflorum John Rooks provided the plant commentary for the night helped by Reg Thank you John. The Lucky Exhibitor was Margaret Tierney. The Plant of Special Interest was owned by Gary Yong Gee. Details will appear in the Bulletin. Athol Rosenberg, the QOS Registrar, gave an Award to the Ipswich President to give to Czes Rudak. The Award was for Paph. hirsitissinum var. esquirolei Award of Merit points. The President reminded members that the Boonah Charity Show will be held on 19/20 October at Boonah State High School. Benching on Friday 18 th and Judging will take place in the evening. Reg thanked Pam Price and Anne Kable for attending to the benching and also for acting as a steward for the Judges. Reg also thanked all those who helped set up the hall. Closure: As there was no further business the President closed the meeting at approx. 9.55pm and wished all members and visitors a safe journey home. 2

The plant grows on the Western side of the house. Watering Two to three times a week in Summer, when it is in active growth. Water once every 7 10 days in winter. Feeding Program: HSO22 weekly from September until April. Nothing in Winter. Potting Medium The mix is medium-fine bark and some perlite. Prizes are given to Best Species, Best Specimen, Best Hybrid, Best Any Other Genera, Best Cattleya Best Paphiopedilum, Best Oncidium Alliance, Best Dendrobium and Best Vanda All members and guests will be asked to vote for the QOS Plant of the Year. These plants, winners of each meeting, will be represented by photographs. Forms showing the names of these plants, are to be distributed, and we ask that the plants be numbered from1 to10, in order of preference. The raffle benches will have 12 buckets and 4 large hampers filled with Christmas food, many orchid plants from various people, bottles of wine, 4 hams, chocolates, bromeliads, and other items. Members are asked to bring something you would like to win yourself for the raffle table. We will need workers, 2 people at the door. Judges for the mini show. A scribe to write down the Judging results. Three or four people to call out the raffle numbers and six people (3 teams of 2) to give out prizes. Margaret Horsey, our Kitchen convenor and her helpers will prepare some very good food and we will have the people from the Church Group to serve the food to everyone. The bar will be open for free wine, beer, soft drinks and water. So everyone please come along see old friends and enjoy our QOS Christmas party. 4

7 Australian Orchid Council Southern Regional Judging Panel (SRJP), Queensland Possible Establishment of an AOC Orchid Judging Training Course in We wish to determine if there is sufficient interest to commence an AOC Orchid Judging Training Course next year. Details An enjoyable learning experience Sufficient pre-requisite experience in orchids will be a determining factor in being admitted to the course. Generally, three years membership of an orchid society and a considerable involvement in several genera should be regarded as the prerequisite. The SRJP Executive will apply discretion in this matter where appropriate. Probably to be held on the 3 rd Wednesday of the month and for 18 occasions To commence between February and June 2014 Lesson Times: Start 7.30pm Finish pm Hopefully to be held in an inner Brisbane location with provision for parking An upfront payment of from $60-$75 (Yet to be finalised) Should the course commence in early 2014, graduates of that course would not become fully accredited judges until 2019 at the earliest. Could be five years till the following training course is conducted. The Southern Regional Judging Panel Registrar needs to know now if you are wishing to participate. Please advise him directly of your intentions if you could be interested in participating. He would also be happy to answer any further enquiries on the possible course.
