APRIL CULTURAL MEETING Weather was great even before we managed to gain entry. As usual a good selection of orchids was benched. The Treasurer was very pleased to declare our Easter Show the most successful ever. This was very timely as construction of the new clubhouse is proceeding at a pace and our coffers are being rapidly depleted but he assured us all that there is nothing to worry about and like all good Treasurers he has everything under control. The guest speaker was Des Warnock from Batphone Australia who again impressed us with his knowledge of all things horticultural. Most importantly the judges finally got it right but the members had the final say! Popular Vote Orchid Coel. Ovalis (1838) Judges Choice Lc. Little Susie (Porcia x Molly Tyler 1959)

5 SUNSHINE COAST SHOW We were a bit light on for display plants at this show but our members still managed one First, three Seconds and three Thirds. Congratulations to Mel & Fay, Ian and Florence, John and Bev and John and Jackie. The stand-out club performance was probably Gympie who only had 25 plants in their display but won 14 ribbons, incl Champion. Not bad! Sunshine Coast won First for their display with Caboolture and Glasshouse tying for second. Show Champion (and also Species and Specimen) was John Green s Bulb. medusae and Frizzo s Van. Colmarie won Reserve Champion.I did take a photo of our display but the fluoro s washed all the colour out. Sorry! John Green s Champion Bulb. medusae JUDY S JOTTINGS Another month has slipped by. Now its lovely warm days and cooler nights. I had hoped that by the time you receive this Bulletin our home would be looking like a home with four walls and a roof but rain has delayed work. Each time any of us drive by we check progress. Exciting news! We have received a cheque from the Gambling Community Benefit Fund for the grant we applied for. The sausage sizzle at Bunnings on Friday 30th April was a lot slower than previous Sundays but we were pleased with the profit we made. This plus the money raised at the stall and raffle which Val and her ladies manned at the Church of Christ retirement Village Fete certainly put a smile on our Treasurer s face. To all Mums. Happy Mothers Day. LIFE MEMBERSHIPS MALCOLM AND LYNN HAUCK Malcolm and Lynn joined the Bribie Island Orchid Society in 1999 and moved to Bribie Island from Wynnum in Lynn has held several positions during the past 10 years. She is currently Secretary of the organisation, a position she has undertaken for the last 8 years and also held the position of Assistant Secretary. In 2001, Lynn was responsible for the development of the website at and maintains the site with regular updates of the monthly newsletter The Bulletin and information on growing orchids and show details. Other positions Lynn has held for various lengths of time have been Editor of The Bulletin, Co-ordinator of the Craft Stall at shows, Bus Trip and Social Events Organiser, Publicity Officer and Guest Speaker Program Co-ordinator. She also was responsible for introduction of the maroon club T-shirts. During the past 9 years, Lynn has been working with various councils and government departments to obtain a lease on land to build a home on Bribie Island for the Society. She has spent many hours preparing and submitting funding grant applications for the home. Lynn has also been successful in receiving grants to assist in the staging of Orchid Shows and to provide essential items such as a photocopier, computer, printer, data projector and a trailer for equipment necessary to displaying at orchid shows throughout South East Queensland. Malcolm has worked regularly on the Plant Sales tables at the shows and assisted wherever he was needed. He was responsible for the updating and printing of the Constitution and By-Laws of the Society in Malcolm has generally assisted Lynn in her various positions and without his support, Lynn would not have been able to fulfil her roles as successfully. It is an honour to present them with this Award.

6 PLANNED BUS TRIPS/BUNNINGS FUND RAISER We still need more numbers!!! Saturday 29th May Starting time pm This is a New Growers' Afternoon and All are welcome. We are going to Frizzo's at The Glass House Mountains (They have many greenhouses and many years of experience). We are going to the Theatre, Savoyards, at Iona Performing Arts Centre to see " 42nd Street" 'Celebrating The Dream' This is the story of hard work, being in the right place at the right time, talent and love! Forty-Second Street is a celebration of Broadway and the people involved in shows. It focuses on aspiring chorus girl Peggy Sawyer, and takes us along her journey. Musical hits include You're Getting To Be a Habit with Me, Dames, I Know Now, We're in the Money, Lullaby of Broadway, Shuffle off to Buffalo and 42nd Street. 7 FLORICULTURA-THE BIGGEST? Thought you might find following interesting. Information gleaned from an article in March 2010 issue of The Orchid Review (RHS publication) by Rob Bock, Gab van Winkel and Ton Klaassen and Floricultura s website. Floricultura in the Netherlands supplies about 65 million young orchid plants every year to about 400 commercial nurseries. They employ 700 people. Mainly supply Phalaenopsis hybrids but also Cymbidium, Dendrobium nobile, Epidendrum, Masdevallia, Miltonia, Odontoglossum, Oncidium, Paphiopedilum, Zygopetalum. Their website has detailed cultivation notes on all these varieties. A test batch of new hybrids usually consists of 140 new hybrids, of which eventually only 20 to 30 will be put on the market. Total glasshouse floor space is more than 15 hectares. The heavily blotched harlequin Phalaenopsis from Taiwan are not as popular in the West as the softer, more refined, pastel colours and delicate dot-and-stripe patterns. They are developing a truly red Phalaenopsis and claim a black variety already exists but it still has a slightly purple-reddish hue. They target the pot plant and cut flower markets and are not a grower of species which they leave to the specialised nurseries. Assendelft Branch Heemskerk Branch

8 SHOW AND TELL John Green s Potinara Free Spirit x Blc. Dal s Horizon Kaye which was Show Champion at Wondai and also awarded an AM (Award of Merit) Now you may well ask what s he doing in an orchid newsletter? Well in the absence of any other contributions, and in need of a filler, I have taken editorial licence to include this cute pic of a regular inmate of my previous orchid house. Especially for Jean Corney and Jeanette Saviane and other bird watchers in our society. A thornbill I think. NEW GROWERS Following the inevitable humorous introduction, the attendance of 23 were enlightened on the changing needs of orchids in the coming cooler months by Ian McLaren. His notes ably recognized the different weather conditions we experienced over the past two summers. Ian then outlined in some detail how Ph levels impact on the growing of orchids and the need to retain a neutral Ph level in the medium, between 6 and 7. Don and Margaret then demonstrated various readings on different substances with a Ph Tester. There were no orchids benched by new growers, regrettably, but the experienced grower winners were G, Cooper,. K. Read and J & J McKinnon. Foliage winners were: J & J McKinnon, K & J Carleton and D & M Neldner Support of bus trips in May and June was urged and Judy reported on progress with the Society's new home. Thanks to all who supported the raffles. Next meeting will be at Noela Frizzo's and the coach leaves Woorim at p.m. on 29th May with usual pick ups. Don and Margaret Neldner, Coordinators
