AGM will be held at October meeting. s and visitors are welcome. All plants to be tabled by 7.30pm for judging. APRIL GUEST SPEAKERS s were given demonstrations by John and Kathy on how to mount orchids on an array of material e.g. hardwood tree bark, cork and tree fern. Several orchids were selected that were suitable for this type of growing. The plants were held firm against the material by the use of light fishing wire which can be removed when new roots self attach to the host material. It was mentioned how to provide a hook at the top of the mount so that it could be easily hung and also that these plants dry out quicker than potted orchids, so more frequent watering is required. MOTHER S DAY SHOW Just a reminder that your help is required for our mother s day orchid show to be held in the Girl Guides HUT 14 Beach Street Maroochydore on Saturday 13 th May 8.30am to 2.30pm Set up will be 7.00am. GYMPIE ORCHID SHOW Please contact Duncan if you intend providing orchids/foliage for our display. Set up is on Friday 5 th May at the Gympie Showgrounds. You are requested to print your own labels for this show. 1

7 ASSESSING WATER QUALITY An Overview by Stephen Flood (B.App. Sc.(Hort) MAIH ph or potential Hydrogen is a measure of the acidity or alkalinity and is expressed on a 0 to 14 scale with 7 being neutral Increasing acidity Neutral increasing alkalinity The scale is logarithmic e.g. ph 5 is 10 times more acidic than 6 ph 4 is 10 times more acidic than 5 Therefore ph 4 is 100 times more acidic than 6 Epiphytes: - prefer a ph of 6 to 7 i.e. neutral to slightly acid Terrestrial species: - preferred range varies considerably depending on the natural habitat of the plant and the potting media used. Tank water usually has a ph of 6.5 unless there is air pollution. The main effect of an acidic or alkaline ph is related to nutrient uptake in that most nutrients essential for plant growth decrease in availability. Levels of ph can be assessed using electronic meters and by dye kits. Salinity is a measure of the amount of dissolved salts or minerals in water. There are good salts and bad salts. Some dissolved salts are harmful to plants, others are essential elements for plant growth but these essential nutrients can still be harmful if present in excessive or toxic levels. The most common dissolved salts or iron present in natural water are: Cations Sodium Calcium Magnesium Anions Chloride Carbonate Bicarbonate Sulphate Units of measurement for salinity: 7

The negative impact is more pronounced if saline water is applied to leaves rather than just to the root zone. Stunting and plants grow slower. Leaves are smaller and often thicker, more succulent and darker green. Leaf discolouration occurs, especially on margins. Leaf margins may turn yellow, then brown or black as the leaves die. Some plants develop a silver or white appearance to the leaf margins before leaves drop from the plant. Salinity makes plants more susceptible to attack by diseases. 9 Slow Release Fertiliser for sale The society has purchased a slow release fertiliser for sale to members. The fertiliser is Plantacote TopK 8M and it has an 8 month slow release time. N9 P3.9 K15.7. It is able to be purchased at the May cultural meeting and is in a 1kg pack for $7. Plantacote K is a coated controlled release fertiliser which releases nutrients by a natural membrane process. Potassium pronounced coated NPK-Mg controlled release fertilizer with micronutrients. Controlled nutrient supply suited to plant requirements over a period of approx. 8 months for flowering plants and perennials. See the Plantacote web site for more details. Anyone wishing to attend this meeting should contact the Ipswich Orchid Society secretary for details as per the forwarded to all members from Kathy our secretary. Fred Clarke will also be giving a lecture at the Tropical Queensland Orchid Conference and Show at Townsville in June. Sale plants at cultural meetings s may bring plants to sell at meetings. So be prepared and bring little extra cash if you are interested in buying. 9
