2 Last month has been rather cool and all we orchid growers have been having a bit of a rest from potting and the watering time is a bit more sociable. It is time to enjoy some time in planning for the coming year and preparing for the barrage of shows which come in the Spring. I am enjoying the emergence of some cymbidium flowers and the buds are covering my little Twinkles. I am looking forward to seeing them in flower again. At our last meeting we had a good crowd and it was surprising just how many flowers were tabled. The cattleya collection was really nice. Wayne was to have given us a lecture on Vandas, but we were disappointed, when we struck technology problems with the intended program. We hope that this can be sorted out and we can enjoy it soon. Our species group had a cool afternoon meeting at Kureelpa with Hazel and Val. The day was cool but the afternoon entertainment was warm and friendly. Lots of plants were on show and some of the phalaenopesis were really good quality. Wayne showed a magnificent green Tricoglottis which was very heavily flowered. Visiting Val and Hazel out the back was a beautiful pair of frogmouth owls. They were sitting so quiet in the trees that they were almost invisible. We had an from Caoundra last week to tell us that Des Anderson has passed away and also to tell us that Ken Stead has undergone major heart surgery. We wish him a speedy recovery. Our Alan Shield has recently been on the sick list and we wish him a speedy recovery too. Not too much to report this month so we ll sign off and wish you all happy orchid growing until we all meet up again. Regards Pat and Clive. CHECKING THE NAME LABELS. 4 May Cultural meeting - Judges Choice Alan & Alison Parkes Pterostylis tenuicauda Pterostylis tenuicauda Alan's notes. I received the first serve of Pterostylis tenuicauda which consisted of 3 tubers from ANOS Victoria tuber bank in 2009 and the second serve in If grown correctly the tubers multiply readily after each flowering season. The first attempt to get a reasonable display of flowers was not what I had expected. The problem being the type of mix I used and also I did not check the compost acidity level. There is very little information available as to what acidity level suits the growing of terrestrial orchids but after working with different mixes, I found that a PH value of 4.5 to 6 seems to be satisfactory. I have been growing ground orchids for 7-8 years and at first I used the mix that was developed by other growers over the years comprising of: 2 parts course sand 1 part rich loam 1 part buzzer chips 1 part leaf mould I now make up my own loam consisting of a fine clean soil mixed with equal quantity of fine well composted leaf mulch, as you can not guarantee what chemicals & fertilizers are present in the commercial available loam mixes. To this I add a course leaf mulch of eucalyptus leaves that have been left to compost for several months. The course sand used is no larger than 4mm. The finished mix has to have good drainage. A small amount of blood and bone is included in the mix before the Ph value is checked. It is important at the start of the growing season that the pots are well watered to ensure that the mixture is thoroughly saturated and then a regular watering programme is instigated which allows the mixture to drain but not completely dry out. This is important, too much water will rot the tubers and if they dry out completely will shrivel up.
