But they also had to come up with a totally new word. The word is petrichor, and it s used to describe the distinct scent of rain in the air. Or, to be more precise, it s the name of an oil that s released from the earth into the air before rain begins to fall. This heady smell of oncoming wet weather is something most Australians would be familiar with. The word itself has ancient origins. It s derived from the Greek petra (stone) and ichor which, in Greek mythology, is the ethereal blood of the gods. CSIRO scientists Isabel (Joy) Bear and Richard Thomas first described petrichor in Thomas had for years been trying to identify the cause for what was a long-known and widespread phenomena. That many natural dry clays and soils evolve a peculiar and characteristic odour when breathed on, or moistened with water, is recognised by all the earlier text books of mineralogy. The odour was particularly prevalent in arid regions and was widely recognised and associated with the first rains after aperiod of drought. Was it something in the soil that gave rise to the smell? By steam distilling rocks that had been exposed to warm, dry conditions in the open, they discovered a yellowish oil trapped in rocks and soil but released by moisture that was responsible for the smell. The oil itself was thus named petrichor - the blood of the stone. The smell itself comes about when increased humidity a pre-cursor to rain fills the pores of stones (rocks, soil, etc) with tiny amounts of water. While it s only a minuscule amount, it is enough to flush the oil from the stone and release petrichor into the air. This is further accelerated when actual rain arrives and makes contact with the earth, spreading the scent into the wind. 3 The Bunbury Orchid Society will host this years Inter Society Orchid Display & Workshop on the 6th & 7th the Busselton Youth & Community Centre in Busselton. The Dinner and Presentation Night will be held in the Busselton RSL Sub Branch Hall situated on the corner of Causeway Road and Rosemary Drive on Saturday the 6th August. The Dinner List will be on the Raffle Table at the Jujy meeting. PLEASE NOTE - The Bunbury Orchid Society would like to know the numbers for the dinner and your menu choices. (To Charly please) The WJOS intend to hire the 21 seater bus and a 2 ton van to take the plants, and the luggage. Please bring all your plants for the display to Lynne Greenhams house at 3 Wheatley Ct, Greenwood at 10am on Thursday 4th August. Chris and crew will sort them out and fill out the entry cards. The bus and the truck will be at Ezi-Gro Orchids on Friday the 5th at 11am. Your cars can be left there safely over the weekend. Your luggage will be loaded into the truck along with some of the display material. We will then travel to Lynne s house for the plants, then it s off to Busselton. We have booked our accommodation at the Bayview Geographe Resort in Busselton where we will stay for two nights, returning back to Perth on Sunday evening. The trip to Tropical Colours was cancelled as the owners would be overseas at that time. It has been rescheduled for Saturday the 30th July and we will be visiting Flora Plant the same day. An invitation to the Opening Ceremony on Friday evening will be included in the (very reasonable) Conference Registration costs. The Conference show schedule will be produced and overseen by the Orchid Judges Panel of WA, and judging will be under AOC rules. The WAOS Conference web site is now on line and will be updated from time to time as we have further news and information for you. We intend to have all the usual pages including contacts, subscribing to our e-newsletter, Conference venue, Lecture Program, our vendors (including pre-ordering to ensure that you are able to get the orchids that you want), and a host of other interesting facts that will be posted as they come to hand. The What s New page will give you the very latest information about our plans to make this a truly memorable event and updates on what s happening here in Perth. Orchid Spectacular Conference & Show in Perth, Western Australia, using the database from our successful 19 th Australian Orchid Conference, We note that your is already included in this database and would like to give you the opportunity to have it removed if you so desire. We hope you will be happy to receive our updates from time to time regarding the Good News that is happening here, but we do not want you to feel that we are inflicting you with spam. It is, of course, early days, as the conference is still some time away, but it is never too soon to be making your plans to visit us in The venue will be the Ballroom of the Rendezvous Hotel at Scarborough WA, which overlooks the famous Scarborough beach with it s long stretch of white sand that attracts swimmers, surfers & bodyboarders. Scarborough Beach is also popular for kite surfing and wind surfing. The Rendezvous Hotel boasts wonderful uninterrupted views all the way to Rottnest Island and to Fremantle down the coast. Scarborough Beach is about a 20 minute drive north west of Perth and is serviced by regular buses from the city. The venue is surrounded by many restaurants and cafes offering a wide variety of cuisines.
