6 TIP OF THE MONTH, Alexey Tretyakov At the September meeting Alexey spoke about fertilizing orchids. This is a summary of his presentation. Seasonal Fertilizer Schedule Seasonal rotation of fertilizers is important for improving plant growth, maturation, and bloom. Contemporary industrial horticulture uses a rather sophisticated feeding programs of the fertilizer application. As an example, General Hydroponics identifies 12 phases of plant development with special fertilizer formula for each period. One can reference a feedchart of Flora Series, Drain-to Waste methodology of that company Website: That sophisticated approach yields a maximum crop if someone grows only tomatoes or only cucumbers or any other monoculture. However, that scheme is impossible to implement for a typical orchid collection, which consists of diversity of the species and hybrids with non-synchronized phases of plants growth. Below is an outline of our society September meeting Tip of the Month about my seasonal fertilizer schedule. Active growing period: from late February-March to late August-September. Use high nitrogen fertilizer, relatively high concentration of fertilizer solution and frequent application. My favorite fertilizer is a Miracle-Gro All Purpose Plant Food ( ). Apply ½ of recommended dose by-weekly at the beginning of the growing season and weekly from April-May. Period of maturation and dormancy: from September to February. Use low nitrogen fertilizer, low concentration of fertilizer solution and non-frequent application. My favorite fertilizer is a Miracle-Gro Tomato Plant Food ( ). Apply ¼ of recommended dose weekly, then by-weekly at the beginning of the season and monthly from October-November. Perhaps lumping from 12 to just two phases can be considered as a very radical action, but I am using this schedule for many years with reasonable results.
