1 The INFLORESENCE Angr. sesquipedale Grown by Jerri Larsson Orchids for Amateurs South Bay Orchid Society, Inc. P.O. BOX 3793 Torrance, CA Angr. elephantinum Grown by Steve Moeschler Our August 25, th Friday of month Guest Speaker will be Peter T. Lin The 3 A s of the Orchid World: Angraecum, Aerangis, and Aeranthes Peter T. Lin will be presenting a talk on: The 3 A s of the Orchid World: Angraecum, Aerangis and Aeranthes. This fast paced PowerPoint presentation will showcase three of the main genera in the Angraecoid family of Orchids, as well as some of the lesser genera. Along with the species, we ll also take a look at some of the beautiful hybrids that have been made over the years. Peter started growing orchids over 35 years ago, but then stopped due to school and starting a career. It wasn't until about 14 years ago that the orchid "bug" came back and he is now heavily involved once again. He is an accredited judge with the American Orchid Society and a hybridizer of mini-catts. He enjoys meeting with other orchid enthusiasts, and can often be found at various orchid shows and societies around the country. He also has hundreds of photos of his orchids that he maintains on Flickr. You can view them by typing this address into the internet: Due to limited growing space, Peter likes to specialize in miniature orchids, both species and hybrids, and has received numerous AOS awards. His other interests in orchids include Dendrobiums, Angraecoids, and Neofinetias. He is also known as Mr. Sophronitis a he has a passion for growing and collecting them. He maintains a collection of a thousand or more orchids at his home in Southern California in three small greenhouses, as well as in the house under fluorescent lights. Peter will be providing the plants for this month's raffle table. There will be a nice selection of orchids, so be sure to buy your tickets! August 2017 South Bay Orchid Society page 1
2 President's Message - August 2017 NOTE: our meeting on August 25 is on the 4 th Friday of the month Our fall show and sale is on September 16 and 17 at the South Coast Botanic Garden. In order to make it a successful event we need your help. Volunteering is the best way to participate with your fellow members, enjoy the show, get well fed, and have a great time. The show committee works very hard to insure everything goes as planned before, during, and after the show. Your support helps make this a great show. The August meeting will be our last meeting before the show, we will have volunteer sign-up sheets for various slots, times, and positions. The more people we have the less will be the work for each of us. We will also have a members' sales booth - please go through your orchid collection and decide which extras (divisions, or excess plants) you wish to donate to the society. The sales generated from this sale will guarantee that we have enough funds to pay for our yearly rental dues, the speaker fees, the plant table, society affiliation membership fees, newsletter, website, expenses, and the holiday party. The entrance fees for the show are collected and kept by the South Coast Botanic Garden Foundation and L.A.County, not the South Bay Orchid Society. Setup for the show is scheduled for Friday, September 15 th from 4pm-8pm, please bring your plants you wish to enter for competition during those hours. Also bring any plants you are donating for our sales booth. DO NOT bring plants during the show on the weekend. The plant classifications are on the website at: The registration slips are available for your convenience on the website at: Consider filling out the registration slips ahead of time as this will make things go more smoothly. There will also be members to help you complete the registration forms on Friday. Rules and regulations are at: Any show related questions can be directed to our show chairpersons: Arthur Hazboun or Charlotte Lazar-Morrison or Karen Low For all the show information go to: Arthur Hazboun - President August 2017 Promenaeas xanthine Grown by Ruben Chicas August 2017 South Bay Orchid Society page 2
