Orchids for Amateurs Founded July, 1957 The INFLORESCENCE November, 2005 Web site: November Meeting Friday, November 18, :00 PM South Coast Botanic Garden Crenshaw Blvd. Palos Verdes Peninsula Speaker George Vazquez Zuma Canyon Orchids George and his parents, Amado and Maria, own and operate Zuma Canyon Orchids, and have been growing and hybridizing phalaenopsis for nearly 50 years at their location in Malibu. George has been growing orchids for about 30 years, is an accredited orchid society judge, and served in various positions on many committees for 17 years at the American Orchid Society. George Vazquez retired from A.O.S. when he was on the executive board, last serving as secretary of the A.O.S. During the last few years, when he was on the board, they founded what now is known as the permanent location in the new headquarters of the American Orchid Society. George and his parents are also very heavily involved in the International Phalaenopsis Alliance (I.P.A.) and in showing their orchids at worldwide orchid events. In fact, in the last past 50 years; Amado, George and Maria have been involved in receiving, both at Arthur Freed and at Zuma Canyon Orchids, well over 800 A.O.S. awards and at least 8 or more F.C.C. gold medals at world orchid conferences. Culture Session 7:00 PM George Vazquez, in addition to his speaking duties at our next meeting, will give a culture session on phalaenopsis culture, and the secrets of how he gets those beautiful blooms. 2 President s Message This month we have the results of the Fall Show, and as you can see from the next three pages, we had a great show with lots of winners. So, to save space this month, I am going to make this very short. Our Holiday Party is December 16, and for those of you that have not signed up to bring something, sign up and bring something good to eat. This is one of our best events, so don t miss it. We will again have the South Torrance High choir to serenade us right before we eat. So, without further words, I would personally like to wish everyone a very happy Thanksgiving. See you Friday, Ned SBOS Ribbon Judging Ribbon Plant Exhibitor Novice Cattleya Thamina Haque judge 1 Blc. Sybil Farwell Hawaii Tom Renger 2 C. Chocolate Drop Kodama Garcia Tom Renger 3 Blc.
