Well, I am still out of town and am writing this from the parking lot of the Sun Valley Lodge. No, we re not staying there we are camping in our fifth wheel trailer. I was very sorry to have missed the Cal Orchid picnic! I heard that it was a great success and that the BBQ was expertly manned by Alan, Alice did a great job with check-in, and the raffle and, of course, Bill did his usual fantastic job of overseeing all and making sure it all came together. A big shout out to everyone else who helped so much. I will be back in plenty of time for the September meeting, and look forward to seeing you all again. There is a board meeting scheduled for September 27 at 6:30 at the home of Vicky Price. We will be discussing the Huntington show coming up in October, the Holiday Party coming up in November as well as 2018s Library Show. ALL COS members are invited to attend! 2 COS Picnic Held August 20 At Cal Orchid In Santa Barbara On Sunday, August 20, 47 of our members and guests assembled at Cal Orchid Nursery for a picnic, plant raffle, and orchid shopping. As usual, Lauris and James Rose were gracious hosts, conducting a tour of the greenhouses, providing their fantastic homegrown guacamole and other goodies, and helping members with their plant selections at the raffle table. In addition, they gave each participant a free plant, a Paphiopedilum delenatii Tiffany X delenatii Colorama. George Hatfield, owner of Hatfield Orchids and current American Orchid Society President, joined us at the picnic and made a special presentation to Gayle Brodie recognizing her service to the AOS as Chairperson of the Affiliated Societies Committee. Thanks to the following Conejo Orchid Society members who organized and ran the event, and provided and prepared the food: Bill Gunning, Debbie Church, Al Dorfman, Susan Dubin, Ewa Gago, Glenda Hallden, Marian McWilliams, Steve Miele, Brenda Rule, Alice Smith, Ellie Staight, and Chiyoko Tanger. 3 COS Will Have Exhibit At Huntington Orchid Show To Be Held October The Huntington Orchid Show is right around the corner, Friday through Sunday, Oct and there are many opportunities to participate. As in past years, we will be entering an exhibit in the show and we need volunteers. We will need people to help design our exhibit and to help with set-up on Wednesday, October 18 and tear down on Sunday, Oct. 22. We will also need plants (duh!). It would be great if you can bring your plants to the show Wednesday morning for set-up. If not, we can make arrangements to get them there for you and return them afterwards. So be looking through your collections and nurturing the plants that are looking to bloom at show time. We will need the full names of your plants no later than the weekend before the show so we can make up the labels. In addition to being eligible for an overall exhibit prize, individual plants may be entered for ribbon and or AOS judging. As an added bonus for participating in our exhibit, either by helping with set-up and/or tear-down, or providing materials or plants, you get free admission to the Huntington on set-up day and for the show dates, Friday through Sunday. Just wear your membership badge or show a membership card (available at our October meeting) at the entrance. Another opportunity is to participate in the ribbon judging on Thursday, Oct. 19, the day before the show opens to the public. Join a group, led by an AOS judge, and participate in the selection of the 1 st through 3 rd place plant winners and see the exhibits in pristine condition. No experience necessary. More information will be coming on this. Brandon is also in need of volunteers to monitor the exhibits, staff the plant hotel, or provide general support. The weather was wonderful as was the food and the orchids. I am expecting that the guests were so impressed that they will become future COS members! Ewa Gago was the only member who asked for her Green Thumb 10% discount card. I assume she was going to stop at Green Thumb in Ventura to pick up supplies for planting her newly purchased orchids. At our September 11 meeting don t forget to ask me for the Green Thumb 10% discount cards. The cards will be valid through March 2018! I m looking forward to seeing everyone at the September 11 COS meeting.
