Any cultural advice provided is a guide only and may not suit individual growers. It is the responsibility of the individual to validate such advice before applying suggested methods. The Society welcomes potential members to come to the general meetings as our guests, and advises those wishing to join us, that subscription fees (in Australian Dollars) are $20 for a single, $25 for a family from 1st January $10 for a single, $12.50 for a family from 1st July Other Orchid Societies interested in affiliating with us are advised that Society Affiliation is $30 Payable on the 1st January each year.

GENERAL MEETING Red Hill Sports Club, 22 Fulcher Road, Red Hill Minutes Monday, 14th July, 2014 The President, Albert Gibbard, declared the meeting open at 8.05 pm and welcomed the members and Judges. The Judges were John Rooks, Lynda Rapkins, Les Vickers, Les Lobley, Steve Waters & Athol Rosenberg. Apologies: As per the attendance book. New Members: Nil Raffle: Albert announced details of the raffle for the evening and prompted members to obtain their tickets. Alf Filia sold the raffle tickets, thank you Alf. Raffle prizes were later presented. Correspondence: Members were advised that the Committee had attended to all routine correspondence. Notice of Society shows, Schedules, Newsletters and other sundry notices were on the notice table. Financial Report: Our Treasurer, Nick Woolley, presented the financial report for the month of June, 2014 and moved acceptance. The report was seconded by Gordon Grant. The Treasurer s report was on the notice table for Members to read. Visiting Society for this month was the Brisbane Orchid Society. The President Ken Haase informed the Members that the Brisbane Orchid Society is moving forward, they are now on Face Book and have a Website. They have one show each year in April. This Society meet at the Progress Association Hall, 1873 Logan Road, Mt. Gravatt - Opposite Spotlight. Ring the Secretary, Regina Chandler for any enquiries on Ken Haase benched plants to be judged in the Visitors section and received 1st, 2nd & 3rd prizes. Supper was then served. Thank you to Margaret Horsey and her helpers for the excellent variety of tasty food, tea & coffee. The Speaker this evening was Ken Webster, who spoke on Vandaceous. Ken informed the Members of the growing conditions, types of fertilizer, different types of containers used, actually telling us exactly how he grown these orchids. An interesting talk, enjoyed by all. Albert thanked Ken for his efforts and presented him with the speakers fee. Albert reminded the members about the "Christmas in July Dinner" bus trip, which is on the 20th July going to the Tarampa Hotel. Please ring Albert for more information ( ). There are 47 passengers so far. Each person on the bus will be presented with a healthy Orchid named "QOS 80th Anniversary". Nick Woolley drew out 10 raffle tickets, the winners each won a well grown orchid plant or other. The Plant of special interest selected was Cestichis latifolia owned by Gary Yong Gee. The First Prize winner of Judges Choice in Species was - Taurantha sp. aff. tenuicauda owned by Gary Yong Gee. Thank you to John Rooks for doing the plant commentary. DISPLAY AT THE EXHIBITION: Barry Kable gave the Members information on the set up of the display to be erected at the Ecka. Drop off points on Wednesday, 6th August will be at Barry's residence at 281 Redland Bay Road, Capalaba and also at Albert Gibbard's place at 11 Barrabui Street, Bracken Ridge. Approx. 200 orchids will be needed, all in good condition. The orchids will be transported in a van to the Ecka. Growers are asked to place an extra plant tag in each pot with the their Orchid Society name (eg. QOS or other Society) and Code Number clearly written. Each grower should keep their own list of plants. Workers are also needed to man the stand all through the Ecka, please contact Barry so he can organise the roster. Barry will also inform workers the times they are needed. Barry said that workers will replace wilted plants as the need arises. For any information regarding the stand at the Ecka, please ask Barry Kable. Albert thanked Pam Price & Ann Kable for attending to the benching lists. Albert also thanked all those who helped set up the hall. It was pleasing to see one of our Website people attending the meeting. Welcome to Jane Gibson. Closure: As there was no further business the President closed the meeting at approx. 10pm and wished all members and visitors a safe journey home. 3 SPECIAL INTEREST PLANT OF THE MONTH JULY 2014 Plant Name Cestichis latifolia (Syn. Liparis latifolia) Exhibitor's Plant Number 30 Owner's Name Gary Yong Gee Judges Comments: Unusual plant not often seen on the benches. Owners Comments: Housing: 70% Macrolite greenhouse with air conditioning and overhead misting system to try to keep up high humidity and maximum 28 degrees Summer temperatures. Watering: Overhead sprinkler from rain water tank every 2-3 days from Spring till Autumn. Frequency reduced to 3-5 days in winter as medium takes longer to dry out. Feeding Program: Once a week Horticultural Solutions HSO22. September till April. Once a fortnight HSO12 - May till August. Potting Medium: Sphagnum moss and polystyrene in plastic pot. Other Cultural Comments: Plant is not allowed to dry out for long periods. Bulbophyllum lindleyanum This is the first flowering of this plant for us. It is quite attractive if your eye sight is very good. It measures 13mm across. We are growing it in small bark from Mt Gambier with a little sphagnum moss included. Plants are currently watered once a week and lightly misted on two other days during the week. Information & Source Orchid Wiz ORIGIN/HABITAT: Myanmar (Burma) and peninsular Thailand. Grant (1895) reported that this orchid is from the Tenasserim region where it grows on the shores of Mergui. Distribution extends southward into the Thai Peninsula where Seidenfaden (1979) reported collections from near Kopah and Muang Lan, Ranong. Specific elevations were not reported, but we assume from the description that plants grow on the shores of Mergui that these are low-elevation plants. -- Source: Charles Baker Distribution Plants are found in India, Thailand and Burma Culture Keep plant in warm temperatures. Keep moist in summer seasons and do not allow mix to dry, in winter keep the mix slight dry and reduce watering. Keep good air movement to avoid fungal growth. Keep plants in shade. Pot plants in sphagnum moss, fine bark, or mounted. Naming Binomial name Bulbophyllum lindleyanum Charlie & Helen Edwards Presidents Report Our 80th Anniversary Christmas in July Dinner was a really good day out, everyone had a good time, the Tarampa Hotel really turned it on for us with good entertainment, a good dinner and a present for everyone delivered by Santa and Mrs Claus. 6 QOS 80th Anniversary Xmas in July A big thanks to our president Albert for organising it. We all had a great day with a lovely lunch. Santa and Mrs. Claus attended giving out presents to everyone who attended and then every Membership that attended received our anniversary Orchid which has been registered QOS 80th Anniversary. I think all who attended will agree we had a great Social outing with our fellow Members. 6
