Apologies: As per the attendance book. Raffle: Reg announced details of the raffle for the evening and prompted members to obtain their tickets. Barry Kable sold the raffle tickets, thank you Barry. Raffle prizes were later presented. Correspondence: Members were advised that the Committee had attended to all routine correspondence. Financial Report: The Treasurer, Nick Woolley, presented the financial report for the months of November, December 2013 and January 2014 and moved acceptance. The reports were seconded by Albert Gibbard. The treasurer s reports were on the notice table for Members to check. Notice of Society shows, Schedules, Newsletters and other sundry notices were also on the notice table. At the next Committee Meeting, discussion will be held on the annual charity donations. Previous Charities were the Australian Orchid Foundation $250 and also Youngcare Ltd. $1000. Those Members present were happy for the Committee to make these donations again in Supper was then served. Thank you to Margaret Horsey and Myra Westphal for the excellent variety of tasty food. Val Marsden also helped in the kitchen. This evening the Judges gave an extensive report on the benched plants, which was very informative. Thank You to Les Vickers, Ken Webster & Les Burow for providing the plant commentary. Our Autumn Show is only a short time away, on the 11, 12, 13th April with set-up on Thursday 10th April. The Auditorium at Mt. Coot-tha will be opened for benching from 12 noon on Thursday 10th. It is essential that we have many Members to help run this show on all days. Some people put their name in the work book, but we do need many more helpers. Don't forget if members want to sell plants they are obliged to bench at the very least, two plants of show bench standard. Nick drew out nine raffle tickets, the winners each won a well grown orchid plant or other. Thank you to the raffle ticket seller, Barry Kable. Thanks to Albert Gibbard for taking care of our raffle prize plants, they always look healthy and well grown. A special interest plant of outstanding culture was not selected at this meeting. The First Prize winner of Judges Choice in Hybrid Orchid was Phal. Tinny Honey owner B & A Kable. The First Prize winner of Judges Choice in Species was Les Vickers with Paph. moquettianum. The Lucky Exhibitor this evening was Barry Kable. Reg thanked Pam Price and Ann Kable for attending to the benching lists. Reg also thanked all those who helped set up the hall. At this meeting 4 people handed the Secretary nomination forms for places on the QOS Committee for

3 Special Interest Plant Of The Month February, 2014 Exhibitor s Plant Name Brassavola cucullata (B. cucullata) Owner s Name Ken and Pauline Webster JUDGE S COMMENTS: Unusual species orchid - not normally seen around the benches. OWNERS COMMENTS : Housing: The orchid is grown in a weldmesh Peter Glen Shade House construction with shade cloth consisting of roof (70%) and walls (50%). There is a permanent white clear plastic roof under the shade cloth which reduces the direct sun and rain. The plant is positioned on the north-western side of the orchid house and receives the hot afternoon sun which it appears to enjoy. The plant is grown with hard can dendrobium and cattleya in the same area. Watering: Watering is done by hand hosing or by misting. In summer, one heavy watering once a week with moderate misting every second to third day. In winter, water is reduced to one heavy watering every 8-10 days with occasionally misting of the leaves and ground. Watering is done in early morning however on hot summer days (30+), have occasionally mist late in the afternoon. Feeding Program: This particular plant is nothing but sticks for 10 months of the year however in late December and January each year, the plant usually flowers on most occasions between 3 to 5 flowers. Use slow release fertilizer (8 months) which is applied in early September; assortment of different liquor seaweed solutions; and whatever else feels right at the time. Potting Medium: This particular orchid has not been repotted in the past 16 years. Grown in a clay pot in the same mixture of old decaying bark and charcoal, the plant roots have attached itself to the side of the clay pot and appears happy not to be disturbed. Other Cultural Comments: Owned this orchid for over 30 years and it has flowered regularly in the past 12 years. We apply the approach - if it is growing and flowering well - why then disturb it: Final Comment: B. cucullata can be distinguished from B. nodosa by its narrower, longer leaves and the longer peduncle. NOTICE for all JUDGES AOC Judges Meeting to be held on Thursday 13th March 2014 at Red Hill Community Sports Centre 22 Fulcher Road Red Hill Starting at 7:30pm QOS Judges Meeting will follow this meeting 3

A: Types of clouds are numbered according to the altitudes they attain, with nine being the highest cloud. If someone is said to be on cloud nine, that person is floating well above worldly cares.
