4 PRESIDENT S ANNUAL REPORT Another year in our Orchid Calendar has flown by and my third term as President now comes to a close. Once again it has been a busy year for all of us, with our two shows being the main highlights. Celebrating Queensland Birthday with our Oct. Q150 Show and then this years Easter Show were amazing, whilst the latter exceeded our wildest expectations with attendance numbers. It was great to watch our Financial Resources grow over the past 3 years - saving towards our "home". As we all know our bank balance is now seriously depleted. Where did that money go? On our 'Orchid House' of course. It's been so exciting this year to watch the progress - from when the tree was felled, land levelled, slab laid and finally the walls and roof erected. Over the past few years, frustration was often experienced by our Building Committee when dealing with the various departments of the Council. Whilst there is still much to be done on the inside of the building, we now wait impatiently for the water and then sewerage to be connected. Extra activities have been included to our Orchid agenda. This of course keeps us out and in the public eye. We now attend and have a sales table at the Over 50's Lifestyle Expo; the Handcraft Craft's 'Great Morning Tea' for Cancer and their November Sales Day and also Sausage Sizzle Days at Bunnings. Our first Community Charity contribution raised money for the Kidney Foundation and now for the second year, we are supporting the Bribie Island State High School students who, each September, fly to Cambodia to work in an orphanage. Our members donate money and suitable items needed by the children in the Orphanage and village. Now for my THANK YOU'S To our Secretary Lynn Hauck who besides doing all the normal secretarial duties, excels herself with magazine stories and all those successful Grant submissions. Our Treasured Treasurer Ian McLaren - for such detailed financial reports and those cheesey grins we get when we hand over our money. Show Organiser Mel Wheeler - ever reliable in his organisation of our Shows and excellence in propagating our beautiful Dtps. Bribie Q150. John Stokes is now our Editor extraordinaire. He has changed our Bulletin so much since taking on this position. Diann Sirett always plans in detail our ever popular and enjoyable Bus trips and also heads up the Sausage Sizzle Team. Gwendella Cooper has done a magnificent job since taking over the role of Advertising. Don and Margaret Neldner who have kept the New Growers Meeting up and running. Val Anderson for all her lists we have to add our names to, together with organising raffles and phoning us to remind us of our raffle selling times. Catering Committee, must not forget them, they keep us so well fed at our shows and meetings. I know I have missed thanking some members. Many of you automatically do certain jobs at shows and meetings. I THANK YOU ALL for taking them on. You have made by life as President so much easier. Now to our Major Sponsors. We could not survive with out them. Our Patron State Member for Pumicestone Carryn Sullivan, The Q'ld Government with the Q150 Grant, The Moreton Bay Regional Council with their Festival and Events Grants, The Bribie Island R.S.L., The Bribie Island Bowls Club and Councilor Gary Parsons. Thanks too must be given to those Members who continually sponsor a class at all our shows. Finally to the Committee and all the Society Members thank you for you continued support over the past 3 years. I wish the incoming Committee continued success in its leadership of this great Bribie Island Orchid Society. I Have a Degree in Liberal Arts; Do You Want Fries With That? A hangover is the wrath of grapes. A journey of a thousand miles begins with a cash advance. Stupidity is not a handicap. Park elsewhere! They call it PMS because Mad Cow Disease was already taken. He who dies with the most toys is nonetheless DEAD..
5 NEW GROWERS A superb presentation on the culture of African Violets by Bob Moore of Tarragindi enthralled those present at the last meeting. In a warm and humble manner Bob shared with us his passion and love of their culture and displayed some of the many dozens of plants he has had registered over the years. Bob also donated a plant for the raffle which was won by Jeanette Saviane. As usual the raffle was well supported by the 25 members and 5 visitors present. Sadly no new growers benched plants so we encourage them to do so next time. Winners of the Open group were M & V Anderson, D & M Neldner and J Saviane. The same three won the foliage in the same order. As this was the equivalent of the Annual Meeting, Don distributed his annual report and presented the trophies. New Grower trophy was won by I & C Macqueen (absent), the Open Trophy went to J & J Stokes and the Foliage Certificate was won by M & V Anderson Congratulations. Newly elected President Ian McLaren gave an update on The Orchid House. At the next meeting on 31 st July, Ann Sales will present a powerpoint show Orchids of the World. African Violet Starcraft Bob Moore gave each attendee a leaf of this plant to grow on. BUS/THEATRE TRIP Such was the response to Di s first trip to the Savoyard Theatre that she has been pressured into making another booking for Carousel. All those who went on the last trip have rebooked. Cost will be the same, $55 for show and bus trip with stop at Cannon Hill Shopping Centre on the way. Date is Sat 2nd October. Di needs to confirm booking this month so if you want to join the merry throng ring her asap to get your name on the list. IAN S INKLINGS I would first like to thank Judy for the work she has done as President over the last three years and for continuing to be part of the management committee by accepting the post of Vice President this year. Our society owes her a debt of gratitude for her work in what has been the busiest three years of our society's life so far. I also want to thank each of the other members of the management committee for their efforts in this busy time. In particular we must all be grateful to Lynn whose unceasing work we have already recognised publicly in the past year. Next Mel Wheeler whose organisation has helped make our shows grow, and Grow, AND GROW into such hugely successful and profitable activities as they are today. And without the profits of these shows we could not have even begun the home which we will soon be able to enjoy. It also must be said that without the cooperation and efforts of all our members who have worked together in friendship and harmony we could not have achieved what we have. 'The Orchid House' is nearing completion but there is still quite a bit to be done. Most of the structural elements are complete but the House Committee has a balancing act to do to prioritise the fitting out tasks and the available funds. One of our Life members, Ron Powell, has given us $500 in memory of his recently deceased mother Mrs Ann Powell, to be used to purchase something for our home. Thank you very much Ron. I have been less than impressed for several years with the lack of cooperation of certain staff members of what was Caboolture Shire Council. This has continued to the present in the matters of water supply and sewerage. However, thanks to the application of our Secretary and the representations of Cr Gary Parsons, the Moreton Bay Regional Council has given us a grant of $11,700 to be used in the finishing of our project. Some of this money will be used for the additional plumbing costs which we should not have had to bear and have not budgeted for, but will now be able to afford. We must all thank John Hopgood, Merv and Mel for the work they have put in to getting the building to its present state.
6 NEW GROWERS ANNUAL REPORT Another year of varied programmes and continuing support by new and experienced growers was enjoyed by an average attendance of 25.8 members and visitors, most meetings being held at the Church of Christ Hall. The coordinators were absent for the May and July meetings but those meetings were ably led by Tom Davis and Ian McLaren (May) and Judy Carleton and John Stokes (July). Topics included: Breaking up and Repotting overgrown plants (May), Growing and Propagating Staghorns, etc., by Dallas Minns (June), What is involved in doing the course for judges (July), Bus Trip to Pine Rivers and Logan Shows and a visit to Jin McCubbins Orchid Houses (August), Orchids on Bribie Island by Ian McLaren (September), Growing Stanhopeas by Don & Margaret Neldner and Ian McLaren (October), The Christmas Party with competitions and rolling raffle (November), A Panel of growers discussing the Watering of Orchids (January), Merv Anderson explained the use of Cocoanut Fibre as an medium for orchid growing (at Anderson s February), A DVD on Unusual Orchids, Propagating Phalenopsis (Graham Mackay), and Advice of how orchids are judged at shows and technology involved, by the judges and Lyn Hauck (March), and finally Autumn requirements for orchid growing and the importance of correct Ph levels in the medium by Ian Mclaren and Don and Margaret Neldner. (April). The Skite Plant competition among experiences growers was very keen but we must encourage more new growers to bring their plants in future. If you have plants that are looking poorly, bring them along for possibly some helpful advice. There was also an open competition for Foliage which will be continued this year. Thanks to you all for your encouragement and support, for Gwendella arranging the refreshments, Tom Davis and the Church of Christ for Hall use, all the presenters and Diann for bus trips. We look forward to another interesting and satisfying year of promoting the growing of orchids and fostering fellowship among members. 1. My husband and I divorced over religious differences. He thought he was God and I didn't. 2. I don't suffer from insanity; I enjoy every minute of it. 3. Some people are alive only because it's illegal to kill them. 4. I used to have a handle on life, but it broke.
7 AGM SPECIAL AWARDS Extra recognition of Lynn s contribution to our society and the Bribie community at large when Carryn Sullivan presented her with the inaugural Sheila Wilson trophy which is awarded by popular vote each year to the individual who has contributed the most to the welfare of our society. 10 PSEUDOBULB ROT/VANDA WILT Following is from an article by Helen Ogle in a 1997 issue of Orchids Australia Symptoms Phomopsis and Fusarium fungi cause pseudobulbs to rot upwards from their base. Fusarium also causes wilt in vandas when the fungus enters stem tissue through dead roots or wounds or stubs of past inflorescences. Above ground symptoms associated with infection by these two fungi are: Leaves turn yellow, shrivel, wilt, twist and fall off. Roots decay, the plant declines and the pseuodbulbs and rhizomes die. Cattleyas particularly develop a brown rot from the base and the margin between healthy and rotted tissue is very sharp. (Sound Familiar?) Control/Treatment Difficult because the fungus is growing deep inside the plant where fungicides can t reach. Drenches of systemic fungicides may be effective but have not been tested. Affected tissue should be removed ANNUAL SHOW REPORT Well another very successful year has passed by. We started with our spring show in October 2009 where a large number of blooms provided a great spectacle for the general public and visitors. It was very pleasing to see so many flowering plants of Dtps. Bribie Q150 benched for judging. The show was a great financial success. At our recent Easter show we had a record crowd of 940 through the door providing us with records in all departments. All these results can only be achieved by the excellent publicity provided by many members so thanks to all those people and every other member who helped out in some way or another. The success of our show is now bearing fruit with the building of our home which is now almost complete. I look forward to going to meetings and not have to worry about setting up tables and chairs and then packing them away. Once again thanks to all members who have made it a very successful year.
