2 Try atrade Background: Try atrade is a Worldskills Australia initiative that introduces school aged students to a variety of trades, relevant to their region and skill shortage areas. The program aims to provide hands on, interactive trade activities that introduces specific skill sets and encourage students to have a go, under the guidance of professional Tradespeople, Apprentices and Registered Training Organisations. The event also offers the opportunity for students to ask questions and gather accurate study, career and employment information relating to trade careers. The Darwin Try atrade event is organised by a consortium of organisations comprising of Charles Darwin University, Group Training NT and the Department of Education and Training (DET) and is funded by Group Training NT Foundation and NTG Department of Education and Training. In 2008 Territory Construction Association, who was a member of the consortium from , officially withdrew from the consortium due to their inability to continue supporting the event. The Northern Territory was the first in Australia to deliver a Try atrade event in Since its inception, it has been a huge success valued by Schools, Students and Industry. Student numbers have steadily increased over the years, with a huge growth to over 500 participants. Due to the increase of participants in the 2006 Darwin Try atrade, the Darwin Try atrade Committee decided to work closely with the Alice Springs region to organise and hold their first Try atrade, which was successfully held in In 2008 the Darwin Try atrade Committee again supported the 2008 Alice Springs Try atrade and worked closely with the Rivers Region to organise and successfully hold their first Try atrade event in Katherine. Both the Alice Springs and Rivers Region Try atrade event provided a relevant enhanced learning opportunity to their local and remote students, as well as facilitated the much needed local community, school and industry partnerships across the regions. The Darwin Try a Trade Committee has continually encouraging regional sustainability, believing regional ownership will ensure the partnerships formed will remain strong and the event will remain specific to the identified needs of the region. However we will continue to provide support to both regions as required, to ensure the event remains successful. The Darwin Try atrade Committee is very pleased with the performance and commitment shown by the Alice Springs and Rivers Region Committee. We are confident Alice Springs has reached the desired level of sustainability and will only offer support on request. The Rivers Region will continue to require support from the Darwin Try a Trade Committee with the organisation and delivery of their event. Try atrade Event Aims: The program aims to address the critical skill shortages currently faced by our trade industries in the Northern Territory. By providing an interactive and educational forum, which introduces students to general skill sets, employability attributes and up to date study and career information associated with the trades. The forum also provides an opportunity to facilitate and strengthen valued partnerships between schools, industries, employers, government departments, local community partnerships and registered training organisations.

Commercial Cookery x 45 Hairdressing x 32 Electrical x 30 Automotive Light Vehicle x 29 Hospitality Operations x 6 Automotive Electrical x 11 Construction x 2 Universal Engineering, one of the Welding activity sponsors, informed the committee that they had received several calls from students during the event enquiring about possible apprenticeships and will follow up with these students. 7

9 Survey Summary: The survey results and career information requests did highlight some worthy and interesting points. 70% of students stated they disliked nothing and 100% of students rated the presentation, information and trade activities offered as either, good, very good or excellent. 90% of students believed they have a better understanding on how to secure a traineeship or apprenticeship, with 77% believing they will definitely choose this pathway and 4% undecided. Although 10% of students identified Commercial Cookery and Hairdressing, and 9% indentified Automotive Light Vehicle and 8% identified Electrical as the trades they were most interested in prior to the event. 10% of students identified the Commercial Cookery and Electrical activity, 8% identified Hairdressing and 7% identified Automotive Light Vehicle as the activity they enjoyed the least. On final count Commercial Cookery had 45 students requested for information, Hairdressing had 32, Electrical had 30 and Automotive Light Vehicle had 29. The overall results of the survey indicate that students believe that at this stage in their schooling, it is 10 12% more important to continue to provide a variety of trades with interactive hands on activities, rather than focusing the event around providing career and pathway information. And although many students can identify trades they are most interested in prior to participating, there is, a substantial number of students that identify trades of interest only after they have participated in the event. Event Feedback: The feedback from Schools, Teachers, Students and Industry continues to be very positive, with one of the most common attributes identified is, the valuable learning experiences this event presents for students, teachers and stakeholders. By combining interactive, hands on activities delivered by professional that work in the field, along with the opportunity to ask questions, meet employers and gather career and pathway information is pleasingly effective and provides a balanced foundation for students to have confidence, allowing them to make informed decisions about their future Industry Sponsors indicated they would be more than happy to continue sponsoring the event in 2009 Survey Prize Winners: Woolaning Homeland Christian College student Gavin National Geographic Back Pack Henbury School student Claire A National Geographic Back Pack Kormilda College student Lincoln P Tool Box with tool set Nightcliff Middle School student Elliot P Tool Box with tool set Dripstone Middle School student Courtney M Fashion Watch Drawn by: Linda Cuttriss, Community Engagement, Community & Access Charles Darwin University. 8
