2 2013 Worldskills Australia NT Try a Skill NT Events Dates Darwin 30 th & 31 st May, Charles Darwin University, Casuarina Campus Rivers Region 20 th August, Katherine DET Training Centre (NTG) Alice Springs 18 th & 19 th September, Charles Darwin University, Alice Springs Campus The Try a Skill Event The program aims to firstly support industry and business by addressing the critical skill shortages currently faced in the Northern Territory and secondly, to ensure students have a better understanding on how education relates to employment and, to provide them the opportunity to learn prior to them having to make choices on study options whilst at school. The forum also provides an opportunity to facilitate and strengthen valued partnerships between schools, industry, business, employers, government departments, local community not for profit organisations and registered training organisations. The program is designed to introduce middle school students to a variety of careers relevant to the regional skill shortages and employment opportunities hands on, interactive activities that introduce specific skill sets related to each field encourage students to have a go, under the guidance of Professionals, Tradespeople and Apprentices offers the opportunity for students to meet Employers and ask questions about what they are looking for in an Employee and how they could secure an apprenticeship/employment gather up to date entry level industry requirements, study pathways, including VET in School (VETiS), and course and career information The NT Try a Skill event was first named Try a Trade and delivered in Darwin in 2003, it is organised and delivered by a consortium of organisations comprising of, NTG Department of Business (Department of Business & Education, Department of Education & Training), GTNT & Charles Darwin University and Territory Construction Association from , with the Australian Apprenticeship Centre NT joining the consortium in The Darwin Event The 2013 Darwin Try a Skill event was held at the Charles Darwin University Casuarina Campus on Thursday 30 th & Friday 31 st May, from 9am 1.40pm. The two day event hosted 360 students and 30 school staff, from 19 different Schools. The Event was delivered with the assistance of 100 Skills Coaches and Volunteers, including Hairdressing Apprentices and VET in School (VETiS) Students. The program included a morning information session which provided information on; Australian Apprenticeships, VETiS & VET study pathways, and showcased the Try a Trade DVD that the CDU VETiS Certificate III in Media students created in 2011 and the Try a Skill DVD that was created by CDU Office of MACE in Participating NT Schools Henbury School, Malak Re-engagement Centre, St Johns College, O'Loughlin Catholic College, Dripstone Middle School, Good Shepherd Lutheran College, Kormilda College, Taminmin College, MacKillop Catholic College, Nightcliff Middle School, Batchelor Area School and NT Open Ed Arlparra School, Canteen Creek School, Elliott School, Gapuwiyak School, Mulgabore School, Numbulwar School, Ngukurr School & Xavier Community Education Centre The event showcased 19 Careers, with Civil Construction, Oil & Gas Industry, Tourism and Sport & Recreation being offered for the first time. Students were provided a choice of 5 x 30 min activities. Each participating student received a Certificate of Participation, with their School receiving a Certificate of Appreciation for their support & laminated photos. Student Career Requests Students had an opportunity to request more information on any career via a form located at the survey table. The information was distributed to them via their School. 3 VALUED 2013 Try a Skill Activities & Supporters Commercial Cookery The Hilton Darwin and Charles Darwin University Students were given information on the various specialisations options as a Chef, and an overview of the other specialisations, such as multicultural cookery and bakery. Students participated in the preparation of delicious and tasty treats which were complimented by a variety of toppings and sauces. Defence Force Recruitment Students were given an overview of the many Careers associated with the Australian Defence Force. They asked questions and collect an array of information. Students were provided hand on activities related to some of the jobs, such as soldering, wire tying & making cardboard models of navy ships. Hospitality Operations O Brien-Price Training & Consulting & Charles Darwin University Students were given an overview of the many different Careers and Employment opportunities within the Hospitality Operations field and then divide into groups to participate in hands on activities, such as Bar Operations Making and tasting Mocktails and Restaurant Services Napkin folding, Food & Beverage Table Service Skills. Hairdressing Jewel Distributors & Charles Darwin University Students were given a host of information about Hairdressing and the many different employment options and travel opportunities available to them. Students were guided through by Apprentices and VET in School Students, and performed professional up styles using professional L Oreal salon products, bobby pins and hair bands. Beauty Services - Charles Darwin University Students were given a host of information about Beauty Services and the many different employment and travel opportunities available to them. Students were guided through the nail condition checks that all beauticians need to do prior to the application of any products. Once complete, students were shown how to take care of their cuticles using orange sticks and guided through the correct nail polish application, and practice on each other, taking the nail polish with them after the activity. Engineering/Metal Fabrication Charles Darwin University Students were provided information on the many different fields of engineering, Study Pathways and School based apprenticeships available to them whilst at school, and the various employment pathways once completed. After a brief OH&S induction into the workshop environment students were encouraged to try their hand at the Welding Simulator. Under supervision students were supervised whilst operating workshop equipment to make their very own key chain. Electrical & Air-conditioning/Refrigeration - Charles Darwin University Student were given an overview of what it is like to be an Electrician & Airconditioning/Refrigeration Mechanic, and the provided the basic theory of 240v electrical systems, including the dangers of electrocution. Students can ask questions and find out entry level requirements and what employers are looking for in an apprentice. Students were shown through the training facilities with large motors, house wiring boards and training resources. They tried their hands at making a low voltage electric motor. Tourism - Charles Darwin University Students were introduced to the many study, career, employment and travel options available to them within the Tourism Industry in the Northern Territory. Students then participated in a around the world quiz where they had to reference a map of the world to answer the listed questions.

4 Light Vehicle Automotive Mechanics & Electrical - Charles Darwin University Students were provided the latest information on technology advancements by professional tradespeople, entry level requirements and the various employment pathways available to them via VET in School or a School base Apprenticeship. In Automotive Light Vehicle students were given a visual display of a working V8 Engine, discussion on engine performance, electronic ignition, emission control and mechanical systems. Students, under supervision were shown how to start and rev the engine, then offered a turn. Students will be shown through a Motor, which has sectional cut out, exposing the internal components and an introduction to Automotive Electrical. Students were provided with the basic theory of 12 volt electrical circuits, used to wire vehicles and trailers. Students were encouraged to use the tools and equipment specific to the trade and guided through rewiring and connecting an electrical board that has standard vehicle wiring. They were also given a demonstration on what happens to wiring during an electrical short. Heavy Vehicle - Charles Darwin University Students were provided with Career information on the many employment opportunities in the Heavy Vehicle (Diesel) Trade and what Employers are looking for in an apprentice. Students were provided study options that will support their application to secure an apprenticeship. Students were given an overview of the Heavy Vehicle Field, OH&S Requirements and information on the advancing technologies. They were provided a visual simulated demonstration on how components work, such as ABS Airbrakes/Standard Airbrakes and hydraulic systems. Carpentry/Construction Nortruss Group Companies & Charles Darwin University Students were introduced to the OH&S requirements and provided an overview of the many Trades that make up the Carpentry/Construction Industry. They discussed the types of employment opportunities, recommended education level and study pathway options available to them whilst at School. Students were then shown roof trusses and guided to use carpenters square, measuring tape, glue and a battery drill to construct Dog Beds, which were donated to the Darwin RSPCA Shelter. The Dog Beds were taken to the painting activity. Painting - Bill Warren Painting Services & DULUX Paints Students will meet and were guided by a professional painter from Bill Warren Painting Service. Students were provided an opportunity to ask questions and get firsthand knowledge of what employers are looking for. They were given an overview on what it is like to be a professional painter, and taken through the many different types of paints and their application. Using water based paint they were shown specialist painting techniques and given an opportunity to paint and decorate, using brushes, rollers and cloth, Picture Boards & Dog Beds. Marine Industry - Charles Darwin University Students were provided an overview of the careers within the marine trades, including the entry level requirements, employment pathways and information on advancing technologies. Students were taken through and shown the various components on, and the operations of marine craft including an overview of the OH&S requirements, marine visuals and tried their hands on some of the skills used, such as knot tying. Students were also provided an opportunity to drive a marine watercraft using our training simulator. Plumbing - Charles Darwin University Students were given an OH&S introduction and introduced to the many specialist areas of plumbing which deal with Air, Water/Liquid and Gas and informed of what they need to do to secure a career in this field. Students were given a visual displays and demonstration on House drainage, Poly Welding and Pipe Threading, Installation and operations of Evaporative Airconditioning Systems, Hot Water Solar Systems, soft Soldering Sheet Metal and tried their hands at silver soldering copper pipes together.

5 Industry Skills Transport & Logistics - Charles Darwin University Students were introduced to the strict OH&S requirements of careers within the Industry Skills fields. Students were taken through the various licenses such as Light, Medium and Heavy Ridged, Crane, Forklift, Elevated Work Platform and Cherry Picker. Students were shown and will practice the different rigging techniques and knots used by Riggers for a variety of loads and completed a guess the weight task with correct students winning their own safety glasses. They were then taken through the role of a Dogger and the importance of safety and awareness. Students were shown and guided through how to fit a safety harness, for the use of scaffolding, whilst wearing the high Visy vests and hardhats. Student then, under guidance operated a cherry picker and workshop crane. Paint & Panel - Charles Darwin University Students received an overview of the type of Careers associated with the Spray Paint and Panel Beating Trades, information on Employer expectations and requirements and what VET in School programs will support their application to secure an apprenticeship. Students were introduced to various equipment and methods used in the Vehicle Body Repair industry to bring a vehicle back to a factory standard. They were taken through basic Panel Beating / Spray Painting steps and equipment e.g. panel beating tools, sanding, crash benches, vehicle measurement, welding, spray guns, paints, spray booths and final the finishing processes. An overview of the potential dangers of injury and poisoning, and the strict OH&S requirements were highlighted throughout the session. Students tried their hand at buffing a dull painted surface back to a high gloss shine, spot welding and spray painting using non-toxic water based paint. Oil & Gas Industry - Charles Darwin University Students were introduced to the many careers available within the Oil & Gas Industry and provided an overview of the many different types of on and off shore facilities and how they operate. Students under the supervision of professionals investigated a simulated gas leak, using a specially designed pipe fitted with a pressure gauge and filled with compressed air, using a soapy formula tested the gaskets to first locate the leak but seeing bubbles and then using large spanners tightened until the leak ceased. Sport & Recreation - Charles Darwin University Students were introduced to the study pathways and careers offered through Sport & Recreation. Students were provided an overview of the many roles and the important basic foundation of all Sport & Recreation activities i.e.: Activities must be well planned and organised, engaging, inclusive and safe for all participants. Students benefited by a quiz to check their knowledge and moved out onto the grass to participate in a modified game. Civil Construction KENNARDS HIRE Palmerston & Charles Darwin University Students were provided an overview of the Civil Construction Industry and the many study and employment opportunities here in the Northern Territory. After participating in a short OH&S induction. Students were taken though the controls and allowed to operate the Digger to move the mound of dirt and Forklift where they learnt about balance and operational limits of the machinery. 6 NT Schools Promotion All NT Secondary Schools were personally provided NT Try a Skill Dates via post and . Schools interested in participating needed to complete a tentative booking form, indicating their preferred day, and provide an individual student registration form that including media permission release section. Marrara Christian College Year 9 students were on school camp, we offered for the school to bring a group of Year 10 students if they felt would benefit from the experience. Promotion and Media Coverage Flyers and information were sent directly to each School Career Advisers and VET Coordinators via and post. An open invitation was posted on the NTG DOB site, AACNT and GTNT Newsletters, CDU Websites What s On Calendar and the CDU Secondary Schools Important dates Calendar. Please tell us what you learnt at Try a Skill a sample of comments provided by students It was fun to learn about all the different careers, it has helped me decide what I want to do What sort of careers are on offer to me and what I have to do to try and get it I learn of all the different trades I did not know about and they were a lot more interesting than I thought I learned that with most jobs you do have to be a people person I learned about a variety of careers on offer to me, that now I want to find out more about I learned what you need to do a trade and what types of jobs they do I learned about a lot of different careers, it have given me ideas I learned that I really enjoy Beauty Services I learned that Carpentry is not easy, but it is fun, I know what I am interested in now I learned that to get a good job you have to try hard at school and when you get one, work hard I think everyone learned that if you want to find your dream job you need to try different things I learned about VET subjects and the programs that can lead you into a career I learned that you should never make your mind up until you have had a go yourself

8 I made my mind up, I will be doing Air-conditioning Refrigeration when I am finished school That being a Plumber is a specialist job and they do so much more than what I thought I learned that you need to think about what you want to do now, and finish school I loved everything about Try a Skill day, it has taught me so much I didn t know about That you still keep learning even if you are already doing the job Student Survey Summary Looking at the survey results, 23% or higher are aware of the careers showcased at the event. Hospitality Operations, Beauty and Hairdressing were identified as being the most enjoyed and the careers students are most interested in pursuing, however all careers showcased were nominated. 92% of students had a better understanding of what they need to do to secure the career they want, this would reflect the percentage of students that were at the event in time to participate in the information session held in the morning. 96% of participants were either interested or considering VET in School as a pathway to kick start their career, with 100% believing that this event is important to their career education. We had 175 requests for more career information, which is a huge increase from 22 in Student Survey Prize Draw; Drawn 31st July 2013, Office of MACE All prize winners will be notified via their School. Prizes will be delivered and presented to the student during Assembly by the School. Notification of winners will be included in the Annual Report placed on the CDU Office of MACE School Segments Website.
