5 Context SCC withdrew from open access youth provision in 2010/11 Young Suffolk incorporated into CAS

6 What is working well? Thriving groups, activities, organisations community/vcs response Just 42, Level 2, Thirst café, Shine project (YMCA) New provision & partnerships eg Jetty Lane CIC in Woodbridge Young leaders programme (CAS) Role of faith community, Town & Parish councils in funding/supporting local provision, eg Sax TC Quality Standards and training - raising standards & practice ESP network Collaboration across VCS/statutory sector (ESYPG) - unique to East Suffolk ESYPAG funding to stimulate holiday activities

7 Challenges Inconsistencies across area in terms of level and type of provision Evidenced by ESYPAG applications Some VCS organisations struggling (recent example of Signpost East) Organisations operating in isolation Governance/quality assurance what does good look like? Confidence/support in dealing with issues Understanding and appreciation of value of quality youth work provision Increasing expectations of VCS, incl. supporting young people with additional/complex needs

9 How ESP could support Connect Continued support of ESYPG to encourage and enable information sharing and identification of opportunities for collaboration Strengthen Waveney representation in ESYPG Influence ESYPG provides route for challenges to be brought to Board level as required for strategic discussion/commitment/resolution Encourage organisations to achieve Quality Assurance as condition of funding Deliver Financial contribution to Level 3 programme Benefits strengthen individual orgs; development of network of VCS orgs working with young people peer support, skills, best practice etc 20k would enable second cohort + investment in governance & quality assurance via network

11 Lowestoft Schools Partnership work 20 x Primary Schools 4 x High Schools 1x 6 th Form College 1x FE College 2 Special needs schools Numerous pre school setting. Schools Review led to :- No 6 th Form students in High School No Middle Schools Wide gap between Primary and High Schools Lack of joined up thinking and working.

12 Relationship building was key Meeting with Primary Heads Meetings with High School Heads Meeting with College Heads. Using existing meeting structures to bring everyone together Meeting Structure :- 10 South Primary Heads meet half termly 10 North Primary Heads meet half termly 4 High schools and 2 College Heads plus Special school Head meet half termly. Lowestoft Rising attends all meeting.

13 Lowestoft Rising Education Summit 1 st April 2014 How can Lowestoft Rising help Raising the Bar in Lowestoft? Vision To Raise Aspiration and Achievement in Lowestoft Our goal is to reveal and help realise the full capabilities of every individual 7 Key Ideas coming out of the Summit: 1.Bring the education/employer brokerage programme to Lowestoft by September 2014 to provide all young people in schools and colleges a link with local businesses. Funded through Raising the Bar, supported by Business in the Community In partnership with Waveney District Council and Chamber of Commerce Promoting pride in Lowestoft and local success stories Building links and information between schools/colleges and businesses Pairing up courses and employers Set challenges related to their business

14 2.Hold a Careers, skills and Jobs Fair in Lowestoft that can bring to life the local opportunities for young people For primary and secondary organised locally for all to attend. Promoting growth sectors and small businesses Opportunity for small businesses to get involved without too much commitment Promote Lowestoft pride 3.Build a strong programme of mentoring and coaching for young people in Lowestoft High school students returning to primaries Aspiring role models. Be the best you can be Lowestoft role models and outside. Developing businesses mentoring/ coaching / positive role models for students & teachers

15 4.Make Lowestoft a leading town for Employability Skills, using Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) education as the driver. Cambridge science centre engagement in programme Make employment skills the main theme in all schools. Intensive summer school English and Maths Train 6 th formers +Low college students as ambassadors 5.Grow local apprenticeship opportunities Promote local opportunities for young people Support employers to take on more apprentices Better careers advice, more impartial 6.Recruitment drive for school governors and school teachers Led by Lowestoft Rising from Business contacts. School/College Heads to lead on developing teacher recruitment plan. Involving local businesses bringing their expertise into schools Resource to borrow to use in school e.g. engineering tools

Localise Raising the Bar to Lowestoft Link Lowestoft schools and colleges with the community and business Link Continuing Professional Development (CPD) activities to gain maximum benefit (across colleges, high and primary and special schools) Focus on developing English and mathematics through links between the schools and colleges Joint initiatives to identify, attract and retain outstanding leaders and staff (especially STEM)
