1.0 Introduction NT Airports participates in National Safe Work Month activities every year and in 2016 many airport stakeholders were involved in this year s events not only as participants but also coordinating their own events. To this end, we saw: Shell Australia conduct: o a mock spill simulation at Darwin airport, o a Goal Zero presentation in Alice Springs and o an Airside driving workshop in Darwin Air Services Alice Springs conducted a control Tower workshop Airport Environmental Officer from the federal Department of Infrastructure and Regional Development come up from Adelaide to conduct and airport environmental workshop. FOD walk in the northern GA coordinated by Pearl Aviation This year we ran 15 events (Fig A refers) in Darwin and Alice Springs and 337 participants attending across all events. This included representatives from the following airport stakeholders in addition to NT Airports staff. 1. Australian Defence Force 2. Alpha Catering 3. Aerocare 4. Air Services Australia (ASA) 5. AirNorth 6. Australian Border Force 7. Aviation Management 8. BP 9. Careflight 10. ChartAir 11. Cobham 12. Department of Agriculture 13. Department of the Environment 14. Defend Fire 15. 7 2.0 Activities SWA 01 Darwin Launch The month activities were launched in the Pandanus Room where Steve Caldwell outlined how NT Airports have performed over the last 12 months as well as outlining the agenda for this year s events. There were 21 attendees for this event. Presentation: ` 2016 national safe work month 3
SWA 02 Shell Simulation exercise Stuart McLean from Shell Aviation Services in Darwin invited airport stakeholders to participate in their spill simulation conducted on the northern GA (general aviation) area. This involved coordination of Shell and their contractors (Direct Haul), emergency services (ARFFS) and DIA airport operations staff. This was a successful event that brought together all the key airport stakeholders that would normally be involved if there were to be an event of this type. There were 14 participants for this event SWA 03 CPR and Defibrillation workshop Once again St Johns ambulance graciously provided some community service training for airport stakeholders. Their trainer had a wealth of experience to share with the group and utilised the equipment from the workplace to ensure the familiarisation with the correct equipment was achieved national safe work month
SWA 04 DIA Work Permits Permits are required for all high risk work activities at NT Airports and to this end it is important that all project managers, contractors, tenants and facilities managers are familiar with these requirements. Failure to comply with the conditions of a work permit can cause unnecessary delays to a project or maintenance works activities and more importantly put workers and the general public at risk and so this workshop was seen as a priority for safety this year. There were 22 attendees for this workshop which was interactive and informative and provided an ideal forum for the issue of the Permit to Work Procedures which are now available to all staff, contractors and tenants on the DIA web site. Procedures: ` 2016 national safe work month 5
SWA 05 Stress in the Workplace Lisa Svara from Q2Health presented a fun session relating to stress in the workplace. Everyone had a fun time whilst at the same time highlighting the importance of mental health in the workplace. This session coincided in Mental Health Week and was popular with our other attending airport stakeholders who I believe are going to have the same workshop run at their workplace. There were 12 attendees at this workshop national safe work month
SWA 06 Launch of Airport Safety Week Airport Safety Week (ASW) is celebrated nationally and internationally across many airports. Ian Kew CEO of NT Airports formally opened the ASW activities. Refreshments were provided as well as some give-aways which were quite popular and generated interest for the upcoming week s activities. There were 30 attendees for the launch. ` 2016 national safe work month 7
SWA 06a ASA Airport Safety Week Activities Day 1 Dave Batic, General Manager from Alice Springs opened activities and presented a workshop on human factors. This was well received and well attended in Alice Springs with 25 attendees including Qantas, RFDS, Virgin and other airport stakeholders providing a diverse group. Day 2 there were two workshops starting with the Shell Goal Zero workshop and followed up by a workshop on Runway Safety / Tower Safety presented by Paul Baishont the Tower Supervisor for Air Services Australia. It was great to see airport stakeholders running workshops for all airport stakeholders to attend and being proactive in the Airport Safety Week activities. There were 15 attendees at these workshops. Day 3 Alice Springs conducted their FOD walk and had 16 participants which as usual is an excellent roll up. Day 5 Alice Springs concluded their Airport Safety Week activities with a Wear PPE to Work Day and no doubt had one their excellent morning teas to finish off the week. Alice Springs has only a small crew of dedicated workers and once again ran a number of workshops and not only had 100% attendance by NTA staff but also managed to have external airport stakeholders participating and conducting workshops. Well done Alice Springs!! national safe work month
SWA 07 Airside Toilet Spills Clean-up Over recent months we have had an increase in toilet waste spills. Whilst prevention is the best cure, spills will still occur and the initial management of the toilet waste spill is important. This session included a rollout of the updated minor toilet waste spills procedure in the form of a succinct safety bulletin and was followed up by a hands on airside toilet waste spill simulation by DIA ground staff and Rob Hangan from Total Safety Solutions. There were 20 attendees at this workshop including Aerocare and Menzies ground handling staff as well as AirNorth, Qantas Freight, Paspaley, Shell and Air Refuel staff in addition to NTA staff. This workshop was well received and set a new standard for clean-ups of this nature and started to highlight the importance of the first response and the role of the user. 14 SWA 08 FOD Walk Airports across Australia and New Zealand participate in the annual FOD walk and NT Airports and NT airport stakeholders came out in big numbers this year. There was a total of 66 participants this year including: 32 participants on main apron at DIA. 18 participants on the Northern GA run by Pearl Aviation. Excellent to see other airport stakeholders running a FOD walk on the GA area. 16 participants in Alice Springs. DIA main apron area Pearl Aviation Northern GA national safe work month
SWA 09 Shell Airside Driving workshop John Stennett from Shell Aviation Australia presented and interesting workshop on Shell s goal zero strategy and also on airside driving safety. There were 17 attendees from a good cross section of the airport providing good interactive feedback on this important issue. It was great to see an important airport stakeholder taking a lead role in the Airport safety Week activities. ` 2016 national safe work month 11
SWA 10 Environment The environment is a hot topic on airport land. All airport lessees and users have a duty of care under the Commonwealth legislation to strictly comply with environmental laws. The Airport Environment Officer (the Commonwealth regulator) provided us with an informative session on what, where and why we have environmental obligations and how we can meet them. This workshop was well attended by tenants, contractors and project managers with 19 attendees in total. Presentation link: %20Environmental%20presentation%20AEO.pptx national safe work month
SWA 12 AMC Emergency procedures / CPR & Defib This session included general emergency training for Airport Management Centre employees and other interested people. There was a briefing on the procedures for emergency evacuation of the AMC and Ian Pask organised for Michael Nuthall from Defend Fire to go through the fire alarm system and the duress alarm systems. The important questions of: Do you know what to do when the fire alarm goes off? Do I evacuate or don t I? If someone collapses when do I use the defibrillator? Where is the defribrillator? Where the first aid kit and what is in it? were asked and the attendees were entertained and informed by the St Johns ambulance presenter Kelly Raven who at some stages had the group in fits of laughter which made for an excellent workshop. There were 18 attendees at this session. ` 2016 national safe work month 13
SWA 13 Emergency Crash Simulation Exercise This international aircraft crash simulation was conducted to test the effectiveness & preparedness of terminal passenger registration and re-unification with relatives after the event. This workshop was conducted by Bob Calaby DIA Aerodrome Safety and Compliance Manager and was well attended by many airport stakeholders and emergency services personnel. There were 45 attendees at this simulation briefing national safe work month
3.0 Resources This year we deliberately set out to run workshops that were topical to safety, airport operations, projects and maintenance and these were applicable to airport employees, tenants and contractors alike. To this end many useful resources were produced in the form of the workshop slides, safety bulletins and procedures that can be used by all airport stakeholders. The following list represents the resources produced and these will be placed on the DIA website > working on airport > safety: Safety Month Launch NTA Safety in Review (previous 12 months) DIA Permit to Work presentation DIA Permit to Work procedure ASA Human Factors presentation DIA Airside Toilet Spills procedure - Safety Bulletin DIA Airside Toilet Spills procedure - presentation NTA Environmental presentation DIA Airport Management Centre - Emergency Management presentation ` 2016 national safe work month 15
4.0 Achievements This year for the third consecutive year NT Airports has won a AAA Safety award. We have now received an award for each of our respective airports: Alice Springs Airport 2016 Tennant Creek Airport 2015 Darwin International Airport 2015 & 2014 This year s winner was Greg Picken (ASA Facilities Manager) for his work on improving the Inroof walkway systems at the ASA terminal. Prior to Greg s work these walkways were non-compliant and generally unsafe and now they are fully compliant walkways with ABC approval. Well done Greg!
