4 CADET PILOT INTERVIEW WORKSHOP Course Content Many applicants have no idea what to expect or understand how to maximise their chances of being successful, so this workshop provides an excellent basis. Delivered by professional pilots with airline experience, you ll leave with a clear understanding of what it takes to become an airline pilot and what other avenues lie ahead of you in terms of further preparation. This workshop serves an initial group discussion forum when you can benefit from listening to some worldleading airline pilot instructors. In an effort to keep participant costs down, this program does not include one-on-one mock interviews or personal advice specific to your situation, however, these are available in our more thorough Interview Preparation Program. Captain Darren McPherson With a career spanning over 30 years and 18,000 flying hours, Darren has operated in both the Australian general aviation and international airline industries. Now a Senior Captain with a major Asian international airline, he has flown the Airbus A330, A340, Boeing and on numerous international routes. Darren also has experience in recruiting aircrew, including cadet pilots and direct entry pilots. 4

7 THE SKY IS CALLING YOUR SYLLABUS WILL COVER - DAY 1 & DAY 2 The Future of the Airline Industry Learn about the direction both airlines and airplane manufacturers are going in a highly competitive market. We will discuss how the industry has changed over the years and how you can become a part of it. Pilot Pathways Before becoming an airline pilot you ll need to earn your pilot licence. In this session we will look at the traditional ways and the advantages of the cadet pilot programs. Cathay Pacific and DragonAir Or Singaporeair and Scoot In this segment we will talk about the history and future of different international airlines, check out the company overviews, management structures, equipment, facilities, values and latest news of the companies. Cadet Pilot Program You ll learn about the different types of cadet programs, how to apply, what will be expected of you, hear about the different types of testing and interviews you ll need to pass. Preparing Your Application Here you ll learn how to make yourself look attractive to the airlines. Learn about why it s important to achieve things outside of your professional career. Fundamental Flight Principles Pilots must have an understanding of how their airplane flies. As a cadet applicant you ll be expected to show your interest by demonstrating that you understand the basic flight principles. You ll learn about the four forces, lift theory, stability and control, stalling and much more. Flight Control Systems Learn about the control surfaces on small and large transport airplanes. Understand how by manipulating airflow, a pilot can control the airplane, and why hand-eye coordination is a crucial pilot skill. Basic Flight Manoeuvres By combining the different control surfaces, the pilot can turn, climb, descend and maintain a flight path. Complete your knowledge of basic aerodynamics in this session. High Speed Aerodynamics As an airline pilot, you ll need to understand the differences between slow and high speed aerodynamics and be able to identify the different design features of an airplane and why they have been designed in that way. Flight Instrumentation Without visual reference, a pilot needs a reliable indication of an airplane s speed, attitude, altitude and direction. In this session, you ll learn about how the flight instrument provides this reference as well as some basic instrument interpretation and the operating principles. Basic Propulsion Systems Learn about the piston engine and propeller power plants found on most light airplanes. Understand how the precise burning fuel affects the power and economy produced. Gas Turbines Larger transport airplanes require more efficient and more powerful engines. Learn about the Brayton Cycles and the advantages of the turbine engine. Also understand the parameters within which a turbine engine operates most efficiently. 7

8 Aerodromes and Airway Routes Pilots must know how to navigate between airports as well as when they ve arrived at an airport. In this session we will discuss the standard markings, the depiction of airways and why they are so important. Introduction to Airspace Pilots must operate their airplanes in a variety of airspace; controlled and uncontrolled. Learn about the different categories of airspace, the role of air traffic controllers and operating using a standard set of rules across different countries. VFR and IFR Operations All flights are conducted using either the Visual Flight Rules or the Instrument Flight Rules. Understanding how these rules affect the type of airspace you can operate within, the weather conditions you can operate within and the services provided to you by air traffic controllers is crucial pilot knowledge. Basic Human Factors Since the first ever recorded flight, there has been one component that has not changed in design; the human being. With all its wonders it is prone to fatigue, hunger, stress, perception which all have an effect on pilot performance. Pilot Judgement and Decision Making Skills Operational decisions need to be based on fact and correct data, learn about how human error is one of the most problematic factors of aviation safety. Your ability to make safe decisions and exercise proper judgment comes with experience and training. Crew Resource Management All airline operations are conducted in a multi-crew environment. Pilots must know how to make correct and effective decisions, play their part within the crew, be reliable and be able to rely on other crew members. Threat and Error Management Learn the international language for managing threats and errors in aviation reporting, training, systems analysis and proactive measures initiatives. Basic Meteorology Pilots must have an in-depth understanding of weather theory. Learn about the atmosphere and how changes in temperature can affect airplane performance. Learn how to identify clouds and the weather conditions associated with clouds. Hazardous Weather Phenomena Storms, turbulence and airframe icing is something all pilots must deal with on a day to day basis. In this discussion we will look at the different types of common weather pilots avoid and more importantly, why they avoid it and what they do if ever faced with them. Pilot Success Stories Hear about how successful candidates made it through the cadet interview process and the cadetship itself, then graduated into the flight crew positions they hold today. Taking The Next Step As we wrap up discussions, you ll learn about what to do to take the next step in your aviation career. This may include some flying lessons, ground theory or further personal studies. Other Paths to Success We always get asked; what happens if I am not successful in my cadet interview?. Though it s not a simple answer, we will talk about other pathways to get into airline pilot positions. Maybe as a charter pilot, a flight instructor, an agricultural pilot. 9 THE SKY IS CALLING YOUR SYLLABUS WILL COVER - DAY 3 Airline Industry & Market Overview A detailed overview of the current airline industry and market forecasts for the coming years in the various regions within Australasia will be given. Also a specific review of the market outlook for individual airlines within this region including Cathay Pacific Airways & DragonAir (Cathay Dragon) of Hong Kong, and The QANTAS Group and various key General Aviation (GA) operators within Australia. The Airline Interview Process The airline interview process can be a daunting unknown for many candidates. We will consider the various stages throughout this process and discuss all aspects of airline pilot screening. The various methods of IQ and physiometric testing through to the panel interview, group exercises and flight simulator assessments. Human Resources (HR) Questioning HR questioning and methods will be discussed and techniques will be practiced that can be utilised during an interview. After identifying question types these methods will be practiced with comparable question scenarios in a mock interview environment, this will help develop successful answering skills. Group Exercises and Skills Group skills have become a significant factor in the airline pilot recruitment phase. Techniques will be reviewed that demonstrate the effects of various personality types. These will be further examined with real life scenarios, resulting in a method to ensure a safe and effectual outcome. Technical Assessments Technical assessment is critical for any airline interview candidate. Our technical assessment session will indicate the effective levels required for the various points candidates could enter an airline; from cadets with zero experience to pilots with a number of years flying experience. This will help identify where you can begin and to what depths any pilot should prepare prior to their panel interview. Open Discussion and Questions Throughout the day various times will be available for both individual and group discussion to consider the wide ranging aspects of the recruitment and interview process. These discussions are expected to provide accurate and real life feedback to candidates that may not be available from reading guides or online forums. As this LIVE feature of the workshop is available it is expected to be actively utilised throughout the course. Interactive Grading Session Prior to any interview all candidates are curious as to their current interview standard. Upon completion of this interactive interview exercise, candidates will have a graded indication of their existing standard. This grading can be utilised with information from further sessions, and once applied will improve their overall position towards a successful airline interview. 9
