1 28 August 2017 Volume Dear Parents, Carers and friends of St Michael s, I write to inform you that Mike Nayler will be away for the rest of the Term due to an urgent and serious medical procedure. What Mike thought was a migraine turned out to be an aneurysm. On Monday, Mike underwent surgery which went incredibly well. He will be in hospital over the next couple of weeks recovering. As a College Community, we will continue to keep Mike and his family in our thoughts and prayers. We wish him a speedy recovery and look forward to his return. Tuesday & Wednesday August 29 & 30 QCS Friday September 1 Gold Coast Show public holiday Preparing Teenagers As parents, we often see ourselves as the protectors of our family. Those in charge of teaching our students, readying them for life and ensuring we offer support and safety. Our end goal is to produce healthy, respectful young citizens with strong beliefs and values, ready to tackle the modern world. Yet a full protection mode of parenting may not necessarily be the best way of preparing our children to encounter life s challenges. Every child needs to be challenged, taken out of their comfort zone and at times, made to feel uncomfortable. This notion of raising the bar of expectation may take the form of opportunities like: Bookshop/Uniform Shop New Opening Hours Monday - 8am 850am Tuesday Friday 8am 2pm 30 minutes of extra study per night, for a month. Giving up a personal possession for a period of time. Sacrificing leisure time to help out around the house. Trying new food. Attempting a new activity. Raising expectations for your child through new experiences allows them to do a little more than they used to and achieve a little more than they have previously. At St Michel s, the students are provided with many opportunities to step outside of their comfort zone and challenge themselves to personally grow. Over the past weeks it has been District Athletics, Dance Eisteddfods and Assignments. This week it will be a student who chooses to complete extra study while on Exhibition break. All of these are important components of a young person s development and formation. St Michael's College respectfully acknowledges that we are on the sacred lands of the Kombumerri clan of the Yugambeh people. Ms Veronica Wasiak Deputy Principal

2 Message from the ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL RELIGIOUS EDUCATION On Friday, August 18, staff members Kara Brennan, Jody van den Driest, Debra Paice and Colleen O Dea received Charism Awards at the Staff Charism Morning Tea. They had each been nominated for their contribution to the College community. On Wednesday August 30, a representative group of year 9 students will attend the annual Mission Mass at Marymount College. Campus Minister, Mrs Jane McGeough-Beach will accompany the students. This will follow closely the lunch time Monday meeting with Mr David Mc Govern from Catholic Mission, where St Michael s students received cards from students in overseas countries in reply to cards sent by the St Michael s students last Christmas. Many thanks to Mrs Kathryn Janovsky for organising this lunch time gathering. Parish News Last Friday night, August 18, the Parish Youth Group, Venire, held a fun night of games, pizza, inspirational guest speaker and live and dynamic praise and worship lead by our local worship team at St Michael s College. The Fuse evening offered High schoolers an opportunity to meet new people, feel empowered in their faith, and grow stronger in a community. The evening was well attended and enjoyed by all. Ms Bernadette Cavanagh is organising a Reflection Day at the Parish Centre, Clear Island Waters, on September 16 from 10am to 2pm. The topic for the day is Meditation and Eco-Spirituality. For further information, please contact the Parish Office (phone ). Margaret Petherbridge APRE Message from the ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL CURRICULUM Professional Development: Raising the bar; practical strategies for enhancing literacy. On August 9, College teaching staff engaged in a professional learning opportunity with facilitator, Dr Ian Hunter (educator and author). Dr Ian presented part of the Write That Essay program, a skills-based approach to the cross-curriculum development of writing ability. His basic message is incorporated in the following quote: Every student matters; every student can be taught to express themselves more clearly and more powerfully and grasp the life possibilities they deserve. Dr Ian Hunter He encouraged us to offer sustained silent writing and gave practical strategies to enhance writing. We explored five different sentence structures and ways to write an effective introduction to an academic essay. Many staff have used the strategies provided to work with their learners over the past weeks. Year subject/ course allocations This week students will receive their subject/course allocation now that the lines have been constructed based on the cohort preferences. Your son or daughter will be issued with a Subject Selection form. Please sign this form and have your child return the form to Student Reception. NAPLAN reports 2017 The Year 7 and 9 NAPLAN reports have been mailed to parents/carers last week. NAPLAN online trial The College has been selected to trial delivering NAPLAN online this September. The aim of the trial is largely to check the College s technical readiness to offer NAPLAN online in The Year 7 and 8 students will review the types of information technology skills required for completing the tests online in LEAP over the next few weeks. On Monday September 11 and 12, Year 7 and 8 students will complete two 40 minute NAPLAN type tests online. One test is a combination of reading, language conventions and numeracy an Omnibus test; the other is a writing test. These results will not be registered against your son or daughter. However, we are happy to be part of the trial as it gives us, as staff, and the students an experience of completing the testing online. Parent Information NAPLAN Online SRT Testing in September Next year St Michael s College will join a number of Catholic, Independent and State schools transitioning our students to the National NAPLAN Online program. As part of our preparations, we will be conducting a 'School Readiness Test' (SRT) in September to confirm we have everything in place to administer NAPLAN Online successfully and seamlessly for our Year 7 and 8 cohorts in The focus of the school readiness test is not on assessing literacy and numeracy skills, but to test school readiness in terms of ICT capacity as well as logistics and administration processes. It will therefore involve simulating an online test for our students who are currently in Years 7 and 8 who will already be familiar with the NAPLAN style of testing and we expect it to only take approximately one hour per test. Students in Year 7 and 8 will perform a Writing test and Omnibus test which is a combination of Numeracy, Language Conventions and Reading. Dates for the trial are Monday September 11 and Tuesday September 12. All students will require earphones (available Officeworks for less than $3) and a fully charged ipad for the trial. The school readiness test forms one part of our approach to transitioning to NAPLAN Online, with preparations well in hand with our teaching and IT support staff. Our focus for the remainder of this year and in the lead up to the online testing period in May next year will be to ensure our students are ready and confident, and we will continue to provide regular updates on our progress. NAPLAN Online align with our Excellent Learning and Teaching: Moving Forward strategy at Brisbane Catholic Education and our commitment to improving literacy and numeracy skills and build the capacity of our students in information technology. We'll continue to provide you with updates, but in the meantime, you can read more about NAPLAN Online, and view sample questions, at the public demonstration site at and Kathryn Janovsky APC

3 M essage from the VISUAL ART FACULTY VISUAL ART AND SPORT COME TOGETHER FOR THE COMMONWEALTH GAMES Year 7 Visual Art students are busy finishing off their artworks to send to the Commonwealth Games Village. The artworks will be hung around the Village. Athletes will then be encouraged to take a photo of themselves holding the artwork and upload this to Facebook/Instagram with the hashtag. Parents and students can then search Instagram or Facebook using this hashtag to see if the athlete has replied with a message of thanks. St Michael s students have used the theme of Our Place and Your Place. The young students have explored the idea of journey from one Commonwealth Country to another and have been fascinated by researching the flora and fauna, geography and culture of lesser known Commonwealth Countries. Hopefully I can share more photographs of their wonderful work before they are sent in November. Narelle Auld Teacher M essage from the RESOURCE CENTRE Book Week Students and teachers celebrated Book Week last week with a variety of activities including weekly quizzes, an Escape Room, a staff morning tea and a book-character facts competition at assembly. Our Escape Room was called The Hogwarts Challenge and was themed around the Harry Potter series. Participating students aimed to solve a range of Harry Potter related puzzles to find clues to locked boxes, which eventually lead to a key to win the challenge. Due to high demand, the Escape Room has been extended for an extra week so all interested students will get the chance to enjoy the game. Year 8 Anthology This term, Year 8 students have been busy drafting, editing and submitting short stories. The students were inspired to write their stories during the visit by our Author in Residence, Paula Weston, with the aim for potential inclusion in an anthology to be published by St Michael s College. A dedicated team of staff members from the library and English faculty spent the past few weeks painstakingly collating, shortlisting, editing and proofreading the submissions and have now sent the final anthology away for publication. During assembly, the students whose stories were shortlisted and will be published in the book were announced. Congratulations to: Adamson, Caitlyn Carpenter, Joshua Casperson, Ava Clark, Caitlin Davies, Jesse Doyle, Evie Ellaz, Lachlan Goldberg, Jade Gray, Madison Kennedy, Paris Knowles, Bryce Lincoln, Emma Maclean, Tahlia Marion, Thomas Pike, Brianna Rangiwai, Sari Tamai, Kali Weatherbee, Aravis On behalf of the team involved, I would like to thank each and every student who made the effort to write and submit a short story. It was an incredibly difficult task to select the final collection as each of the stories were filled with originality and creativity. In the next few weeks, an e-book with all of the story submissions will also be published and made available through the library catalogue, so all participating students will be able to read their work in digital format.
