1 18 October 2017 Volume Dear Parents, Carers and friends of St Michael s, College Sports Awards Friday October 20 Year 11 Boat Cruise Tuesday October 24 VET Celebration Evening Last Thursday afternoon we came together to celebrate our College Sports Awards. It was great to see so many students receiving awards for their sporting excellence. Even though we awarded certificates, medals and trophies to students, significantly it was an afternoon bigger than any individual. The afternoon was a great opportunity for us to come together as a school community, to recognise the service and contribution of staff, parents and students and also to celebrate the richness of the St Michael s community. Thanks to all the parents who attended our afternoon. Particular thanks to Mr Levick for his organisation of the awards ceremony. I would also like to thank all the staff for their involvement in College sport and particularly to all the staff who have given up holidays, weekends, mornings and afternoons to provide students with may opportunities to be involved in competitive sport. Mental Health and Wellbeing Week Last week we celebrated Mental Health and Wellbeing Week. Our theme for the week was R U OK?. Students were encouraged throughout the week to connect and have conversations, write positive words of encouragement, share a biscuit and concluded on Friday with a Health and Wellbeing Expo. It was a great week in raising awareness of Mental Health and Wellbeing and the importance of looking out for one another. I would like to acknowledge the work of Mr Jeff Kemp and Miss Natalie Clapoudis for all their effort in organising the expo and for all their work in providing support to our students. Year 11 Boat Cruise This Friday the Year 11s come together for their Year 11 Boat Cruise. I am sure all the students will have a wonderful time and I look forward to seeing all the creative costumes. Thank you to all the staff who will be attending the evening. Nights like this are not possible without your support. 2 M essage from the HPE FACULTY What s going on? Each cohort is exploring the following units this term: Year 7 HPE: First Aid, Risk Minimisation and chosen sports. Year 8 HPE: Growth & Development and Bat & Ball sports. Year 9 HPE: Nutrition and chosen sports. Year 10 HPE: Life choices and chosen sports. Year 11 HPE: Biomechanics and Gymnastics. Year 11 REC: Baseball. Year 12 HPE: Sociology and Gymnastics. Year 12 REC: Delivery of Minor Games. A reminder to all students participating in PE, that you must be prepared for all classes in order to take part. That includes a full change of clothes (shirt, shorts, runners and a hat). Summer is upon us so feel free to bring a drink bottle. Gym Parents and students are reminded that the gym is open on a Tuesday and Thursday afternoon, 3:00pm 4:00pm. Students are asked to bring a full change of clothes, a towel and water bottle to every gym session. Healthy Hints Before you do your stretching it is important to walk, jog or cycle for a few minutes to warm up your muscles. The more demanding the exercise routine then the longer the warm up period should be. After your workout you should cool down by walking, jogging or cycling and then stretch. Mr Clinton Daddy HPE Faculty Leader M essage from the RESOURCE CENTRE Last term, our Year 8 students attended a week-long author residency, with writing workshops facilitated by Australian author Ms Paula Weston. Students learnt to generate and sequence ideas, create narrative elements and edit their writing, after which they submitted their work for potential inclusion in an anthology. Each participating student should be proud of themselves for demonstrating impressive levels of creativity, originality and writing skill. The anthology has finally been published and is titled Mystery, Robin s Flight and Hatred for Reading Books Twice. A copy of the book is now available to borrow from the library. An e-book of the submitted stories was also published internally and is available to read through the library website. Congratulations to the following students whose stories were included in the anthology: Caitlyn Adamson, Joshua Carpenter, Ava Casperson, Caitlin Clark, Jesse Davies, Evie Doyle, Lachlan Ellaz, Jade Goldberg, Madison Gray, Paris Kennedy, Bryce Knowles, Emma Lincoln, Tahlia Maclean, Thomas Marion, Brianna Pike, Sari Rangiwai, Kali Tamai and Aravis Weatherbee. The students were gifted with their own copy of the book and their work was celebrated during a morning tea where parents, teachers and members of our Leadership team enjoyed a casual gathering in honour of our new authors. This program enables applicants to be assessed on any formal qualifications, life experiences and other transferable skills that support their enrolment application. The Bachelor of Contemporary Indigenous Art (CAIA) at the Queensland College of Art, Griffith University Southbank campus is looking for students for their 2018 intake. CAIA is a three-year degree where Indigenous students are exposed to a variety of different art practices. Interested applicants must be Indigenous Australians, be able to provide a portfolio of current art work, have a year 12 minimum literacy competency and demonstrate a passion for the visual arts.
