1 9 October 2017 Volume Dear Parents, Carers and friends of St Michael s, Tuesday October 10 Year Information Evening Thursday October 12 Sports Awards Presentation Friday October 13 Shannon House Mass Monday October 16 Student Free Day Enrolments As we commence Term 4, we move towards planning for An important part of planning for 2018 is in the area of student numbers and staffing. As a College, we need to be clear about our class sizes, as our staffing numbers are based on the number of students enrolled. As you would be aware, student numbers dictate the number of staff we employ. If you know of anyone who has not yet submitted their application for enrolment for 2018/2019 or may have students who may not be returning to the College, could you please let the College know as a matter of urgency as there is a high demand for places at the College. It is important that we have an understanding of student numbers in each year level so we can offer placements to those who are on waiting lists. College Laptop Program There would be little argument that computers have revolutionised virtually every aspect of our life and work. In schools, we recognise that students must be able to operate in the digital world so that they can participate fully in the economic, social and cultural life around them. Since 2008, when the Labor Government initiated the National Secondary Schools Computer Fund (NSSCF), many schools have been providing laptops to students as part of their school resourcing. The government spent over $2.4 billion in initiating the revolution so that all students could be equipped with the latest technology, to prepare them for the jobs of the future. This funding has long since ended and schools are now responsible for maintaining the Digital Revolution. At the College, we have been planning around the future of our College s laptop program. The provision of a College device is a significant part of our annual College budget and in our commitment to keep our fees affordable we need to be mindful of this in our annual budgeting process. We are currently in the process of reviewing all of our machines and investigating devices which will provide the opportunity for enhanced teaching and learning. As we move into an era where touchscreen and stylus ability are becoming paramount in the workforce, we need to ensure that we are providing our students with the skills and technology that prepare them for life beyond school. All students will be issued with a College provided laptop in 2018 and I will provide further information about the College s IT Strategic Plan in the future. I thank Mr Ben Edwards, Mr Brad Jerome, Mr Marc Littlejohn and Mr Lloyd Rob for their Leadership. Year 12 Monday October 16, Verification Student Free Day The above date is a student free day. This is the time when teachers across Queensland meet to discuss students levels of achievements in Senior subjects and verify standards. Thanks are extended to Academic Middle Leaders and Senior teachers responsible for putting together Year 12 submissions. All students should be reminded that work completed in Term 4 contribute towards final results. St Michael's College respectfully acknowledges that we are on the sacred lands of the Kombumerri clan of the Yugambeh people. Ms Veronica Wasiak Principal
2 M essage from the HPE FACULTY What s going on? Welcome back to Term 4, I trust all had a good break. Students are asked to bring a full change of clothes, a towel and water bottle to every gym session. 3 SAFE DRIVER TRAINING COURSE Last Thursday, 27 of our Senior students travelled to Mt Cotton to participate in the Safe Driver Training Program. The day consisted of classroom theory, discussing such things as driver awareness, safety tips, car maintenance and much more. The students also undertook the practical component, where they got to drive different types of cars under various road conditions so to test their skills. Knowledge of stopping distances, using the ABS brakes effectively, as well as correct driving techniques which will no doubt assist these young drivers in the future and perhaps even save a life! A special thankyou to Dorenda Gutteridge from Learning Support who gave up her day to assist. Also the P&F who generously subsidised part of the cost of the course.
