1 5 June 2017 Volume Dear Parents, Carers and friends of St Michael s, Tuesday June 6 Year 10 Immunisations 7pm P&F Meeting Thursday June 8 Senior Assessment Block Friday June 9 Senior Assessment Block P&F Meeting Tuesday June 6 All welcome to attend School Main Office Boardroom 7pm to 8pm Foundation Day 2017 Last Friday we celebrated our College Foundation Day. The day began with Mass by Father Nicholas. The Mass was particularly special as it was the last opportunity for the College community to celebrate Mass with Father Nicholas before he takes up his position in Ipswich. The students and staff had the opportunity to show their appreciation of all that Father Nicholas has done for the College community and believe he left knowing that he will be missed. We also announced the College s Foundation Day Leaders for Congratulations to Tianne Bennett, Emily Pryse-Backus and Lachlan Jennings who were awarded the honour and now become part of the 2017 Student Leadership Team. I know they will continue to serve the St Michael s community and we are incredibly fortunate to have them on the Student Leadership Team. The famous House Song Competition was once again strong with the competition as fierce as ever. All houses did a wonderful job. As with any competition there can only be one winner and this year s honours went to O Shea. Congratulations to House Captains Annabelle Stevenson and Harry Solano who did an outstanding job in leading their house. Congratulations must also go to the other House Captains Sofia Arcena, Jacinta Casey, Chelsea Macbeth, Nicholas Norton, Mitchell Jamieson and Olivia Kerr. For my first Foundation Day, I was incredibly impressed with the standard and quality of the performances. Outstanding leadership was shown and it is a credit to these fine young people. A new addition to this year s Foundation Day was the final of the Spelling Bee. Over the last few weeks during LEAP and Pastoral Care, heats and semi-finals have taken place to determine the finalists. The competition was intense amongst all competing. Congratulations to Junior winner Michael Fryer (Oxenham) and Senior winner Isabelle Fitzgerald (MacKillop). Many congratulations to all our finalists: Senior Ross Burrell (Oxenham), Clarke Kelleher (Shannon), Emily Totman (O Shea), Junior Aidan Luchs (Shannon), Daniel Gorman (MacKillop) and Billy Wilson (O Shea). The day concluded with the St Michael s Got Talent competition and what an incredible amount of talent we have at St Michael s. I am in awe of students who have the courage to get up on stage and perform in front of their peers and do such a wonderful job. The day truly encompassed what St Michael s College is all about. The Pillars were certainly demonstrated and enacted throughout the day and also in the lead up. I congratulate every single student and staff member for their commitment and effort. It was definitely a day of true community spirit and I feel very privileged to have been a part of it. Finally, I would also like to thank the parents who were able to attend and celebrate Mass with us. St Michael's College respectfully acknowledges that we are on the sacred lands of the Kombumerri clan of the Yugambeh people. New Senior Schooling System Last week members of the Leadership team attended a Forum about the new senior school system. The new system of senior schooling will be introduced into Queensland schools in 2019, with the first Year 12 cohort graduating with an Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR) in This change will apply to the current Year 9 cohort. As we prepare for these changes, it is important that parents of students in Years understand that the current system is a reliable and valid system and the move to the new system for the current Year 9 students, in no way compromises the integrity of the current system. For parents with children in Year 9 and below, there will be information in the form of bulletins, information evenings and QCAA material provided to support parents and students to understand the new system. The key changes to the system include: The introduction of common external assessment in each subject. Strengthening the quality and comparability of school-based assessment.

2 Replacing the Overall Position (OP) with the Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR). Combining school-based and external assessment to derive final subject results. Four assessments (3 school-based + 1 external) per subject. School-based assessment will generally contribute 75% to a student s final subject result; 50% in maths and science. QCAA will endorse and confirm school-based assessments; and ratify subject results. Students will receive a numerical and an A E final subject result. Queensland s current senior assessment system began in the early 1980 s. The OP system was introduced in In a 2014 report, the Australian Council for Educational Research (ACER) said these arrangements were fair and reliable, but would not be sustainable in the long term. ACER recommended changes to achieve greater rigour and simplicity. The introduction of a new system will result in significant changes to our College calendar. With Term 4 being largely given over to external exams, we will be looking at the transition point into the new syllabuses for senior. This may mean that students begin their senior subjects at some time in the second semester of Year 10. External exams and other changes to the way teachers prepare internal school based assessment means that we are currently reviewing our College calendar. End of Semester This week we move into assessment mode for our Year 11 and Year 12 students. I would like to wish every student all the best for the exams and assessment they produce over this time. This is an important time for students and I know that it can also be a pressure time for families. Ms Veronica Wasiak Acting Principal

3 M essage from the HPE FACULTY What s going on? Year 12 HPE write their unseen essay on Monday June 12 in the MPC and conduct their practical assessment for Netball on Monday June 19 on the Blue Courts. Year 11 HPE write their unseen essay on Friday June 9 in the MPC and conduct their practical assessment for Netball the following Thursday June 15 on the Blue Courts. Years 7, 8, 9 and 10 students have completed the theoretical component of the course. PE will now consist of practical lessons only so please bring your clothes to every lesson. Gym Parents and students are reminded that the gym is open on a Tuesday and Thursday afternoon, 3:00pm 4:00pm. Students are asked to bring a full change of clothes, a towel and water bottle to every gym session. Healthy Hints Exercisers tend to breathe shallow and quick because it feels right, but this does not allow the oxygen to get to the deep parts of the lungs. Instead, the right technique of breathing during exercise is to breathe deep and long. Mr Clint Daddy HPE Faculty Leader M essage from the RESOURCE CENTRE Premier s Reading Challenge Last week, we met with the entire Year 8 cohort in the MPC, to encourage all avid readers to engage in the Premier s Reading Challenge. The challenge began on May 16 and finishes on August 25, therefore everyone still has 13 weeks left to meet the target. The Challenge is not a competition but aims to improve literacy and encourage children to engage in reading for pleasure and learning. The requirement for Year 5 through to Year 9 students, is to read 15 books. Students are encouraged to select a range of fiction and non-fiction books suited to their reading ability. There is no compulsory reading list for the challenge, therefore students can list school novels or other books they are reading at home or for SSR as part of the challenge. It would be wonderful if parents could encourage their children to meet the challenge! Please click on the following link to access our exciting selection of Latest Reads. As this is a protected site, students may need to login, using their network username and password. If you can t find what you re looking for here, why not access Best Reads Ever for the genre of your choice. This collection is updated weekly and allows students to search for new fiction and non-fiction of interest. For our parents, our book of the week is entitled Maybe Tomorrow written by Australian Children s Laureate and Aboriginal author Boori Monty Pryor with Meme McDonald.
