1 11 September 2017 Volume Dear Parents, Carers and friends of St Michael s, Monday September 11 Friday September 15 Senior Exams Friday September 15 Last day of term Tuesday October 3 First day of term 4 Tuesday October 3 Friday October 6 Year 11 Biology Camp Tuesday October 3 Sunday October 8 Academic Excellence Experience Wednesday October 4 Year 11 Drama Excursion Best Wishes and Thank You We come to the end of what has been another busy but very productive term. Over the last few weeks students and staff have been focussed on assessment, and for our Year 12s this has been a particularly significant period. I am confident that students will rise to the challenges and demands of this important time and produce their best academic results. We have also enjoyed a wonderful array of co-curricular events and activities over the past term. Thank you to parents for their support of the many initiatives and co-curricular events. I am particularly grateful for the support of those parents who have supported our sporting teams and cultural activities and the parents who have attended our Parents and Friends Association meetings. Best wishes for a safe and relaxing holiday. On behalf of the College Community I would like to thank Mr James Ingham for his contributions to the College Maths and Science Departments. James finishes up at the end of this term due to the return of Carlene Wickham who returns to the College from maternity leave. I m sure it won t be the last we see of Mr Ingham. I would also like to thank Ms Colleen O Dea for her wonderful work as Year 9 Pastoral Leader and O Shea House Leader whilst Mrs Wickham was on maternity leave. Matters of Uniform for 2018 I take this opportunity to write to all parents to outline the College s expectations in relation to uniform in In doing so at this time, allows all parents and students the necessary time to ensure that all students present with the correct uniform on day one of There is an expectation that all students come to school dressed and groomed according to the uniform code. The way our students wear their uniform is a direct reflection of the expectations set by our College community. Their presentation reflects the pride and sense of belonging that comes from being in a school community with high standards. Additionally, a clear and supported uniform code is about treating all students equitably. The main purpose in writing to you now, is to draw your attention to the need to comply with the College standards in relation to school sport shoes when you purchase shoes for In 2017 some students presented with Converse, Vans and other recreational jogger style shoes as part of their sport uniform. In 2018 these types of shoes will not be compliant with the uniform code. The sport shoe required for 2018 is either a cross trainer or running shoe that contains arch support. Please be aware of this requirement when purchasing shoes for Additionally, the College sport jacket will no longer be permitted to be worn with the College Formal uniform. The Formal uniform is just that, a Formal Uniform and students will be expected to wear the College Formal V neck jumper or for Senior students, the College Blazer during the winter months. The aim of our College dress code is to enable all students to dress neatly and smartly. I look forward to your continued support in St Michael's College respectfully acknowledges that we are on the sacred lands of the Kombumerri clan of the Yugambeh people. Ms Veronica Wasiak Deputy Principal

2 Message from the ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL RELIGIOUS EDUCATION In the Senior School, it is exam season with both Year 11 and 12 having shutdown where normal classes are suspended and students attend school only to study or for assessment. One of the more enjoyable experience of the week for me has been listening to a selection of Year 11 Religion and Ethics Orals, where students had produced a Children s Story Book about a religious ritual and then were asked to explain aspects of their planning and preparation. For moderation purposes, a panel of Year 11 Religion and Ethics teachers and myself asked questions of a number of the Year 11 students. It was heartening to listen to these articulate young people describing how they went about the task of preparing the story book. Congratulations to the students who presented to the panel and to their teachers. On Friday, September 8, the pastoral classes of O Shea House gathered at various spots throughout the College for prayer. O Shea 1,2 and 3 gathered around the Celtic Cross on the grassed area near the tuckshop. Alissa Ternel-Picton prepared a prayer and reflection based on the significance of the Celtic Cross. Similarly, O Shea 4,5 and 6 gathered in front of the statue of Christ the Redeemer for prayer and reflection with a prayer prepared by myself and led by Pastoral Leader, Colleen O Dea. Jane McGough-Beach prepared and led a prayer for O Shea 7,8 and 9 around the Indigenous Mural near R Block and Peita Laffranchi led prayer for O Shea 10,11 and 12 in the chapel, which acknowledged the feast day of The Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary. It was a wonderful opportunity to acknowledge the Religious icons in our College grounds and to gather the students of O Shea House for prayer as pastoral groups in our beautiful spring weather. Below is the information about the Christ the Redeemer Statue that was shared with the students before the prayer. Christ the Redeemer is an Art Deco statue of Jesus Christ in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, created by Polish-French sculptor Paul Landowski. The statue is 30 metres (98 ft) tall, not including its 8-metre (26 ft) pedestal, and its arms stretch 28 metres (92 ft) wide. By comparison, it is approximately two-thirds the height of the Statue of Liberty s height from base to torch. The statue is located at the peak of the 700-metre (2,300 ft) Corcovado mountain in the Tijuca Forest National Park overlooking the city of Rio. A symbol of Christianity across the world, the statue has also become a cultural icon of both Rio de Janeiro and Brazil, and is listed as one of the New Seven Wonders of the World. (Wikipedia) Our statue of Christ the Redeemer is a small-scale version of the original. It is placed to look over the central Gold Coast. It reminds us that Jesus and his way of living are available to everyone, everywhere, at all times. Margaret Petherbridge APRE M essage from the HPE FACULTY What s going on? Year 11 and Year 12 HPE have their final practical assessments on Wednesday September 13. HPE High Flyer s Congratulations to the following students who have excelled in theory and/or practical lessons this term: Dylan Libbis, Claire Muir- Smith, Lauren Melville, Aaron Hollis, Hope Di Sessa and Rowan Mathers, awesome work! Gym Parents and students are reminded that the gym is open on a Tuesday and Thursday afternoon, 3:00pm 4:00pm. Students are asked to bring a full change of clothes, a towel and water bottle to every gym session. Healthy Hints Get support! Enlist a workout buddy, join a walking group or take an exercise class. Having others around keeps you from skipping days or cutting corners, literally. Mrs Peita Laffranchi Acting HPE Faculty Leader

3 M essage from the CAMPUS MINISTER It has been a very busy term for the Ministry Team with the Year 9 and 8 Spirituality Days, Year 10 Camp, O Shea Mass and a number of exciting Social Justice activities. Refugee Kids Club St Michael s has started a new Social Justice Outreach Program this term, called Refugee Kids Club. Each Thursday, 11 students from Year 9-11 visit Labrador State Primary School and help refugee children learn and practice English through reading, activities and games. The refugee children are always extremely excited to buddy up with their new St Michael s friends. Elliana Slade and Andre Jones Dorr from Year 11 write: The children come from a multitude of countries, mainly situated in Africa, such as Somalia and Eritrea and have fled their home countries due to conflict and war and have come to Australia through the UN Humanitarian Refugee Program. This outreach program has provided the children with social interaction and relationships with young Australian people and encourages them to feel more at home in a country that is so unfamiliar. Being able to interact with the children and learn from each other has been one of the highlights. I would like to say that we helped these children with their speaking, reading and confidence. However, the reality is that they have taught us so much more, without even trying. The Refugee Justice Outreach Program is an amazing experience and we would like to thank Ms McGeough and Labrador State Primary School for the opportunity to make a difference in the lives of Refugee children. I am very proud of our students who have also employed their gifts and interests to run activities for the children. Next term, one group will go every week and we would love a couple more male role models to work with the little boys. Student meeting with Minister Steve Ciobo This term our Social Justice Group was privileged to meet with Federal Minister for Tourism, Steve Ciobo to present a College petition to save the Great Barrier Reef. As part of our focus on stewardship of the environment, four Year 10 students, Cyndi Missen, Hope Di Sessa, Holly Ranger, Madison Robinson and Aidan Luchs (Year 9 Leader) joined with Mrs Janovsky and myself to present 800 handmade origami fish pledges made by our students, a hand painted banner and a card asking the Government to cut coal pollution, save the Barrier Reef and reduce Climate Change. This was the culmination of an initiative the Year 9 Leaders worked on with Mr May and myself last year. In the meeting, the students asked the Minister, why our Government was willing to loan 1 billion dollars to the wealthy Adani Coal Mining company, a move which would contribute harmful effects on the Great Barrier Reef. As young people, we want to enjoy the beautiful Great Barrier Reef when we re older, Cindy Missen said. We want our Governments to stop burning fossils fuels which are contributing to climate change and coral bleaching and to protect our precious Reef for the future. We had a friendly, respectful and robust discussion with the Minister. We were very encouraged to hear he accepts that climate change is real and was supportive of renewable energy but disappointed he reaffirmed the Government s support for the Adani Coal Mine. However, he really liked receiving the origami fish and said he would see if he could show our fish petition in Parliament! We told Mr Ciobo that as members of a concerned Catholic school in his electorate, we want to see real leadership from governments. The earth is in ecological crisis and as Christians and Catholics, we believe Governments here and around the world, have an urgent responsibility to act for our environment and to invest in jobs in clean energy. It was a really exciting and empowering experience to speak to our government leader and we encourage other students to raise their voice for justice, said Hope Di Sessa. Jane McGeough Campus Minister

4 M essage from the RESOURCE CENTRE Year 7 Readers Cup Challenge This year all Year 7 students participated in an internal Readers Cup Challenge which was a great success. Readers Cup competitions challenge students to read widely, work collaboratively in a team and continue developing a love of reading. All in all, we had 40 teams who battled against the odds with team Born to Read being the victors, followed closely behind by Team Seven and the Book Weasels. Premier s Reading Challenge All results have now been submitted for the Premier s Reading Challenge. Congratulations to all students who met the challenge. You will receive your signed certificates from the Premier in Term 4. Please click on the following link to access our exciting selection of Latest Reads. As this is a protected site, students may need to login, using their network username and password. If you can t find what you re looking for here, why not access Best Reads Ever for the genre of your choice. This collection is updated weekly and allows students to search for new fiction and non-fiction of interest.
