He was accompanied by cricket tragics John Gray, secretary and Jim Gibson, treasurer. David provided some background information about the International Fellowship of Cricketing Rotarians (IFCR) as per the banner or should it read Cricket-loving Rotarians? He stated that you could be a cricket lover without being a player of cricket. The IFCR was formed by and Englishman Geoffrey Pike with the assistance of his friend Australian Gordon Fenwick. At the Rotary International Convention in Melbourne in 1993, a stand set up promoting the fellowship attracted much interest. Each 2-3 years, an international tournament is held with local festivals held between. The first international fixture was held in Fordingbridge, England in 1997 followed by events in Chennai India, Christchurch New Zealand, Hunter Valley Australia, Durban south Africa, Vapi-Damon, India, Nottingham, England and will be held again in Christchurch in (left: Keyway scribe Deidre Tome hard at it) The Australian Festival of Cricket will be held in Wagga Wagga from October. Jim Gibson provided details of the week s festivities which will be his fifth tournament. Rotarians will be able to play the game they love on fields named for significant Australian cricketers from Wagga Wagga. Organisers anticipate six teams will participate and these will be drawn from areas in Australia which will cross state borders. However, a number of Indian and Pakistanis have also indicated their interest. 5

6 The opening of the festival at a mayoral reception will take place on Sunday. Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday are game days separated by a rest day for those showing their age. On Wednesday a bus trip ($40 no lunch) to Coolamon Cheese Factory and the Junee Licorice Factory has been planned. While the men are on the field, partners have the opportunity to see the sights of Wagga without seeing a ball bowled. Simon Taufel, a retired Australian cricket umpire and a former member of the International Cricket council (ICC) Elite umpire panel will be keynote speaker at a dinner on Friday night at the RSL Club to conclude the festival. John Gray reminded members that such get-togethers are very enjoyable and a wonderful opportunity for fellowship with like minded people. He also mentioned women are eligible to play and were encouraged to do so. At the end of each day s play, participants gather for a drink to debrief. Membership of the IFCR costs $10 per year. More information about the IFCR can be found on the district website This takes you to the IFCR site directly rotarycricket.org. Anyone interested in helping out during the festival or hosting Rotarians and their wives visiting from other parts of Australia, please contact David by david@davidbenn.com Following his presentation, Denise Flockton encouraged David Benn to recite one of the many poems he has committed to memory. David then expertly delivered a recitation of The Cattle Dog s Revenge by bush poet Jack Drake, sending members into gales of laughter. (See a copy of the poem below for your amusement). It was then followed by a second The Poker Machine. After much laughter, Denise Flockton presented David (above) with a Sunrise mug and certificate acknowledging the club s donation to the Peanut Butter project and its appreciation for an informative presentation of IFCR and an entertaining way to conclude the meeting. LUCKY DRAW: The barrel was AWOL so David Benn plucked a number from the air. Congratulations to Denise Flockton. MEETING CLOSED: 8:30am, with the National Anthem. (left: Changeover awards) 6

This is a true story. Had this guy died, he d have received a Darwin Award for sure Dear Sir, I am writing in response to your request for additional information in Block 3 of the accident report form. I put poor planning as the cause of my accident. You asked for a fuller explanation and I trust that the following details be sufficient. I am a bricklayer by trade. On the day of the accident, I was working alone on the roof of a new six-story building. When I completed my work, I found I had some bricks left over which, when weighed later were found to be in excess of 500lbs. Rather than carry the bricks down by hand, I decided to lower them down in a barrel by using a pulley, which was attached to the side of the building on the sixth floor. Securing the rope at the ground I went up to the roof, swung the barrel out and loaded the bricks into it. Then I went down and untied the rope, holding it tightly to ensure a slow descent of the bricks. You will note in Block 11 of the accident report form that I weigh 135lbs. Due to my surprise at being jerked off the ground so suddenly, I lost my presence of mind and forgot to let go of the rope. Needless to say, I proceeded at a rapid rate up the side of the building. In the vicinity of the third floor, I met the barrel, which was now proceeding downward at an equally impressive speed. This explained the fractured skull, minor abrasions and the broken collar bone, as listed in section 3 of the accident report form. Slowed only slightly, I continued my rapid ascent, not stopping until the fingers of my right hand were two knuckles deep into the pulley. Fortunately by this time I had regained my presence of mind and was able to hold tightly to the rope, in spite of beginning to experience pain. At approximately the same time, however, the barrel of bricks hit the ground and the bottom fell out of the barrel. Now devoid of the weight of the bricks (that barrel weighed approximately 50lbs) I refer you again to my weight. 8

9 As you can imagine, I began a rapid descent, down the side of the building. In the vicinity of the third floor, I met the barrel coming up. This accounts for the two fractured ankles, broken tooth and several lacerations of my legs and lower body. Here my luck began to change slightly. The encounter with the barrel seemed to slow me enough to lessen my injuries when I fell into the pile of bricks and fortunately only three vertebrae were cracked. I am sorry to report, however, as I lay there on the pile of bricks, in pain and unable to move, I again lost my composure and presence of mind and let go of the rope and I lay there watching the empty barrel begin its journey back down onto me. This explains the two broken legs. I hope this answers your inquiry.
