2 EDITORS NOTE Captain Clemmo and crew Louise are currently travelling home after a very successful Nomad volunteer event in Alice Springs. Not only did the Rotary Nomads lend a hand to the local Rotarians in running the Henley on Todd Regatta but our Club made another donation to the Royal Flying Doctor Service at their Alice Springs base to help them keep flying and providing outback medical assistance. This week is a special round-up edition featuring photos of all our members, including our USA based Nomad Francis Harman, as they worked hard and played even harder in Alice Springs A special thank-you to our guest speaker Sgt Cam Crisp from the Police Citizens Youth Club who told us about the Break the Cycle program. This program helps young people gain their drivers licence by providing experienced mentor drivers that help learners get their 100hrs of driving completed and logged. Having a drivers licence and the ability to get a job involving driving or being able to travel to work by car assists many young people get and hold down a job and breaks the cycle of unemployment, depression and substance abuse Meeting Recording The recording for the most recent meeting is available until next Tuesday at; Jodi Lee Foundation Trek This year the JLF Trek in Victoria is taking to the Goldfields Track one of the most beautiful walking trails in Victoria. The JLF Trek is a two-day event held on Friday 8 th and Saturday 9 th September that will see us hike 80km along Victoria s historic Goldfields Track, weaving our way through the surrounding countryside of Castlemaine. I am walking and we have several Friends of Rotary walking too! Several of our members are also once again helping with a myriad of support tasks over the 2 days. 3 Jokers Wild Round 7 Dennis Wade s marble popped out of the sauce bottle but he very generously declined a pick enabling a re-draw. Terry Barker gained the benefit of the re-draw and drew a Jack of Spades. Allen Hunter also got a second chance this week and Sgt. Cam, our guest speaker, drew for him a 4 of Clubs. Once again the prize jackpots, this time to just under $300 so good luck everyone as the last draw for this round will be made on 30 August. Thanks Dennis. JOKERS WILD Round 8 about to start. 12 What a fun way to do some Community Service in Brisbane put your name down as a volunteer via the link below there are a variety of jobs including scrutineering, starting races, registering entrants, race control, race finishers with 3 shift times to choose from On Saturday 21 October, the RC of Beenleigh will be holding their annual Rum Rump and Rhythm Festival at the Beenleigh Town Square where 4000 plus locals enjoy the festival. For those not residing in Qld, Beenleigh is south of Brisbane. (Rob Curtis, Nomads member Marion's worse half, is also a member of the Beenleigh club - Rob has been responsible for the Rotary Nomads involvement in the Gasoline Alley BBQs - thank you Rob!) This activity is on our service project list and several members have attended in previous years to lend a hand. Lorelle and I will be attending. The RC of Beenleigh requires helpers to arrive from 8am (or when you can make it) and your setting up and service work is probably finished around lunch time. If you desire, you can then return to Beenleigh from 4-9pm to enjoy the Rum, Rump and Rhythm - we attended last year and will do the same this year - it was a great night. 13 House Sitters WANTED - Toowoomba The President of Lockyer Valley Rotary Club is looking for house sitters to mind his daughters & son in-laws house and dog sit (2 cavoodles) from 13th September to the 20th October. If any nomads are looking for time in Toowoomba they would be most grateful. CONTACT : President of the Rotary Club of Lockyer Valley see for contact details. Our District Conference will be held from Friday to Sunday, 9-11 March 2018 at Cleveland on Moreton Bay east of Brisbane. Our club has been asked to be sergeants for the event and it will be our club s job to assist in managing the orderly movement of Rotarians and helping out where possible. For those of you who attended the Roma conference in 2015, it will be similar. For those of you who have never been to a Rotary conference this is one not to miss. Being a sergeant is an honour, in that the District has faith in us to help make the event a success. Members can still take in the interesting conference speakers but in addition, you will be allocated some tasks over the conference as service work for the club. All sergeants will be given a Sergeants Polo shirt for easy identification. At this year s conference, there were over 15 sergeants helping and we will need a similar number next year. I would like to use members and their partners to make up this group many hands make light work Accommodation and Registration Members/partners will be needed as sergeants from Friday afternoon to Sunday lunch. A roster of duties will be drawn up so you will only be needed for certain sessions. It is expected that accommodation will be available for RVs at the local showgrounds. A range of motels/hotel rooms are also available. Online bookings for the conference can be made through this site: If you can possibly attend and help the club, that would be great! The park is offering a 10% discount on all sites and units if you mention Rotary Nomads. The Grampians is a premier tourist destination to visit and if you would like to stay longer the same pricing applies. Saturday 16 th Own breaky then 9.30 casual walk to Brambruk the National Park and Cultural Centre for the best Information and interpretation of the Grampians National Park [Gariwerd]. Gift shop Aboriginal arts and crafts and Park maps and information. Morning tea in the coffee shop and walk back to Caravan Park. Collect picnic lunch which you have prepared or will make and drive to Lake Bellfield picnic and camp area and after lunch a pleasant walk to the Silver band falls. Dinner at the quite famous Kookaburra restaurant or if preferred a highly regarded Indian restaurant or just tea at the caravan park. Once numbers are finalized we will need to book if we go to either or both venues for Dinner as they are very popular. Sunday 17 th Own breaky then a small but pleasant walk to Venus Baths [Guide Nola] or a more strenuous hike to the Boronia Peak Lookout [Guide Dennis] [Check the website for details] pm BBQ at 184 Grampians Rd 800 metres from the caravan park which is called Denola s Retreat. We will organize the food but BYO drinks.
