Congratulations Robin Bailey needs to be congratulated for his efforts on the recent RAWCS Trip to the Solomon Islands. It sounds like he and he team had a great time and made a difference to some Solomon Islanders. He was part of a team led by Terry Daley from Rockhampton who I got to know whilst living there in Meetings 1) The next Craft/Book Club Meeting will be held prior to our Club meeting on Wednesday 2 nd May at 6.30pm EST. 2) The next Murwillumbah Muster Meetings will be held on Wednesday evening, 9 th May and Wednesday evening, 23 rd May at 5.45pm EST. 3) The next Board Meeting will be held on Wednesday evening, 16 th May at 5.45pm EST. Presidential Overseas Tour I will be away firstly on the Japan Cruise with other members from the 22 nd March, then a tour around Japan with Wendy and Grant Symons (and Louise) and then a week in Perth. I will be back on deck for the meeting of 9 th May. Club Decision Making will continue as usual. Financial Assistance The Board has recently decided through an exchange/discussion (this will be ratified at our next Board meeting) to donate $200 to Amanda Thacker. Amanda is a late 20s Paramedic who has been recently diagnosed with Secondary Cancer and has not got a long life ahead of her. She is a friend of Kim Symons, daughter of Grant and Wendy Symons and has a group of friends who have banded together to help her achieve a small wish list in the last phase of her life. Hopefully we can help make the last part of her life memorable. International Conference Our Club is going to make a Presentation about our club at an E-Club information break-out session at the International Rotary Conference in Toronto in June. I will keep you in the loop as this develops. It is a good chance to get ourselves an International profile. Foodbank The discussion about Foodbank a couple of meetings ago was terrific with the following ideas; 1) Everyone to buy a can of food in Murwillumbah and have a collection from Club Members and Outsiders to take to the Brisbane Foodbank office or present to a Foodbank representative at our changeover. 2) Make a financial donation to Qld/NSW Foodbank at our changeover. Rotary Global Grant recognised An international grant will deliver the first permanent renal dialysis treatment units to the Anangu Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara (APY) Lands, in what will be the biggest change to health delivery in the remote region's recent history. The $US153,000 Rotary International global grant will deliver four

treatment units to a dialysis centre to be built at Pukatja/Ernabella Community, in far north South Australia. Read the full story at : Meeting Recording The recording for the most recent meeting is available until our next meeting at; Hope things are going well for you! Clemmo No Joker draw this week but we will be up and running again next week. Don t forget, however, if you want that Jokers Jackpot you need to renew your playing fee see below for details on how to do that. For example "STCLAIR JOK" Spare a thought for Nomad Marion Curtis working at the Gold Coast Hospital during the Commonwealth Games we hope it is a very quiet time for you Marion.

Flying over Guadalcanal you could be mistaken for thinking you are over PNG. It is not until you are going to land at Honiara airport and you see the sweeping white beaches that you know different. Having said that both airports have a lot in common - not a lot going for them. At the airport we changed $200 Australian dollars for just under $1200 Solomon. The drive into Honiara is quite something, as the conditions of the road only allow traffic to flow at 65kms (if that) an hour due to pot holes everywhere. We could only assume this was a work in progress, but only found later that this is a 100 year project, so not likely to improve in my life time. Dust, traffic, people greeted us as we entered Honiara itself along with gutters full of rubbish. Distance from airport to King Solomon Hotel (our accommodation) 11km. Time to achieve this distance 1hour, cost $100 Solomon Dollars. Now we could see that maybe our $1200 we had was not going to go far. No traffic lights, but roundabouts on the only main road through Honiara. King Solomon Hotel very traditional in every way that sits well in its surroundings. Just across the street is the Australian Consulate. Very handy if you need it in a hurry. Climbing the stairs is a challenge in itself. If you wait for the cable car (if it s working) you have time to have a couple of beers - so best climb. Rooms cool and adequate but easier to shower in the pool then chase the drips coming out of the shower head. Every day took on the same routine am out of bed and downstairs by 6.05am for breakfast at the bamboo cafe. Don't get excited about this as you have fruit or cereal or baked beans/potatoes/curry fish/ chow mien or eggs. If you want an experience have the curry fish (you'll pay for this experience around midmorning). Around 6.45am in the vehicles and on the road to Vasalie to work. Trip 33km's approximately - time 1 hour 15 minutes. Drive to site is eventful as you see how they live/work/play. It seems every house has a shop or stand outside selling whatever they can. No dole payments here. Driving along watch out for dogs and pigs. Hit one of these and head straight to the airport. Dogs are the most mangy looking things you can imagine. Most every stall is selling "beetle nut" which is a drug but also a diet suppressant as they can only afford to eat once a day - If that. To get you to look at what they are selling they will dig a drain across the road so you have to slow down to cross it or put a judder bar across the road. You never get to appreciate the size of the population as they just appear out of the jungle as you drive along. You don't get to see where they live as the jungle is so dense. We had to build one 6m x 6m building and one 3m x 6m attached. Also renovate a 6m x 14m existing building. The renovation was where most of the team was placed in the first week. Painting and resurfacing the concrete floor the jobs to do. No concrete ready mix trucks here so hand mix in petrol mixer. Myself and Leigh were assigned the 2 new buildings to do with the help of some local youths who had got into trouble and were assigned to this project. We were lucky with the timber provided as it was still green enough to nail together. But still hardwood. Having decided what we wanted to achieve Leigh started framing while started the trusses required. If you have ever been involved in making trusses you will know these are engineered and pressed in a factory. No such thing here so out with the calculator and cut angles with a circular saw. Cut nail plates from a roll provided and build on the ground. Normally a 6mm pre-chamber is required but what we ended up with was whatever bend was in the bottom cords. Still all went well over the next few days until it got time to place these in position. Lifting hardwood trusses up 2.7m into the air is something to watch. In this case many hands make light work. Having achieved all this and getting it ready for roofing iron. It came to pass that when asked who was to place the iron on I drew the short straw. Looking back on it I think there was only ever one straw to draw. Spending the next couple of days putting the iron on with water dripping of me making it look like it was raining below, I can now look back and say how lucky I was to draw that straw. Once painting and concrete was completed most members came out to give a hand to close in the exterior of these buildings and start lining the interior. As the interior was going ahead so was the painting of these sheets. Forgot to mention lunch. This we collected from the Bamboo cafe as we left each morning. This consisted of 1 sandwich each of tuna with cheese and sometimes tomato. Also 2 packets of biscuits. When lunch came around we were extra lucky as the cheese had melted so it was like a toastie sandwich. When hungry never

turn down food. We had to make sure we each had 1.5 litres of water with hydra-lite in it. On top of this you ended up drinking another 2-3 bottles of water. Leigh and I ran out of bottled water very quickly so would fill up our empties out of a tap that came from a mountain stream up the hill. Best ever. Did we achieve what we wanted - No - but we still did more than expected due to a good measure of help from the local kids. Friday and Saturday nights was live entertainment in the King Solomon Hotel. Beautiful local dancers each night. By the second night we saw it was different dancers but the same dance so we got to know them well. This went on into the night so if you wanted to go to bed you had to use ear plugs to get to sleep. Overall it was something you just accepted as we were the strangers not them. We did manage to see some sights around Honiara. Japanese memorial - American memorial -Art Gallery - Museum - Carving school. We also made time to visit the local markets in Honiara which had everything you could imagine within. Fruit / veggies / fish / hand crafts etc. Without a doubt this was a highlight for me as at no time during our stay at the markets did I feel vulnerable or at risk. The locals where welcoming and always ready to talk and explain what they had for sale. Now is the time to ask the big question - Would I do this trip again. I would have to say without a doubt. When we finished on Friday they put on lunch for us at the school. It was sobering looking at the food along with songs and gifts. When you see this your emotions are running rampant to say the least. I know in my heart that we have provided them with a facility that will last them into the future and that it will be put to good use training the local children at risk for a future they may never had had. Below is a selection of photos from Robin s RAWCS trip report.

While Faye was a member of the traditional Rotary Club of Canberra Burley Griffin (RCCBG), the club commenced an indigenous scholarship program at the Hay War Memorial High School in NSW. Recently Rotarian John Grant from RCCBG, also a caravanner, visited Hay to present the 2018 scholarship. The scholarships are provided to indigenous students who are setting a good example to their peers based on their academic, sporting and social activities. They are valued at $ each and go towards school excursions, books and equipment. The scholarships are provided annually and are administered by the school. This program has proved to be very successful and I hope our Nomads school books initiative at Coolah NSW grows and prospers like this project. A report from Lee about this will be coming after the meeting with the school. Below is a photo of the presentation of Rotary Scholarships at Hay on 29 March, Left to right are Anne McNally (Career Adviser), Joseph Wilson, Vanessa Kennedy, Yvan Chambers (School Principal), Reagan Duggan and Rotarian John Grant.

More photos from our intrepid sailors currently off Vietnam. Many more are on Facebook. Acclamation for anyone who has a good caption for this photo just send to Faye (faye.powell@iinet.net.au) and it will be published next week.

Hope you are well and I am sure like me you enjoyed the district conference. Congratulations on the wonderful work your club did at the conference, a truly remarkable effort. I am very excited and inspired for the journey ahead and need you and the lovely members of Rotary E-Club of Australia Nomads to support me in participating in the attached district changeover event. It will no doubt be one of my finest moments in my Rotary life as I take the role Of Rotary District Governor. I would love you and the member s to be present this evening and be part of my journey as we continue our quest to make a difference serving humanity. I assure you that the evening will be fun and enjoyable, with a slice of diversity, as we Unleash D9630 to be the inspiration. From a humble little town of Labasa Fiji Islands to Brisbane, my journey has been amazing, blessed by friends and families. Please be part of this beautiful and enjoyable evening and look forward to your esteemed presence. Let me know for further details.
