2 ROTARY INTERNATIONAL EXCHANGE RATE All Clubs please note that as from 1 st November 2003 RI exchange rate moves to $AUD1.45 (Formerly $AUD1.52) FROM THE DISTRICT GOVERNOR. Amidst my aspirations for D9700 is my desire that all our Rotarians and Rotary Clubs have a good understanding about and unstinting loyalty towards contributing to the Rotary Foundation. I have in fact asked our Assistant Governors to address all Clubs on this topic very shortly so that all of us should have a better knowledge of the Foundation, its objectives, programmes, administration, procedures etc., and importantly how your Club can benefit from it. Whilst the quote in our Leader herein beautifully describes The Foundation as RI s masterpiece, a working paper from the Foundation goes on to say : To experienced Rotarians, The Rotary Foundation is one of the jewels in the crown. The work it funds pursues the fourth object of Rotary - The advancement of international understanding, goodwill, and peace through a world of fellowship of business and professional persons united in the ideal of service. The paper also goes on to say The strength of the Rotary Foundation lies in you as one of the 1.2 million Rotarians in the world the future will be the extent of your vision and your willingness and commitment to continue to contribute the funds to finance the Programmes of the Rotary Foundation. Whilst I acknowledge the support generally throughout our District to the Foundation for the Polio Plus programme, particularly by some Clubs, has really been nothing less than inspirational, I nevertheless ask that you take the opportunity of your Assistant Governor s address on the Rotary Foundation to acquaint yourself to the fullest extent about it, wherein hopefully we will all have a greater spontaneity about contributing to its work and reaping the rewards it extends to us. Meanwhile the website gives The Rotary Foundation download wherein there is much information about it. Tribute was paid to many Sponsors, supporters and organizers who contributed generously to the resounding success of the evening with appreciation expressed for their effort and involvement not only by Rotary but also by the international community that will benefit from this great project. Great effort RC of Cowra. RC OF SOUTH WAGGA WAGGA RAISES $11,800 FOR CANCER PATIENTS Another entertaining day was had by all at RC of South Wagga Wagga annual fund raising golf day. This year their nominated charity was the Cancer Patients Assistance Society and the money raised, $11,800 which is a fantastic effort will go towards the new Hostel for Cancer Patients in Edward St Wagga Wagga. In asking President Des Hamilton how they can raise so much from a golf day he volunteered the following information. We sell sponsorships We ask business houses to sponsor a team of 4 $25 / head. There are 18 holes so we have 2 teams to start at each hole. We sell exclusive advertising on each tee and each $100. We sell advertising anywhere on the course except where exclusive tees or greens are sold for $50. We run nearest the pin for $10 per team. Guess the number of golf balls in the boot of a car for a gold coin per guess. We have have a row of bottles of wine on the practice putting green. At a gold coin per shot if you hit a bottle it is yours. We have Carlton United as a sponsor and we have a drinks cart going around the course during play.. It is a shotgun start with 2 teams starting on each whole so that we all finish together. It is always a very successful day and over the past 5 years that we have run it has raised an average of $10,000. Good one South Wagga Wagga. It is easy to see why everyone enjoys themselves so much at this annual event. COOTAMUNDRA ANTIQUE FAIR A GREAT SUCCESS To the Headline of Treasure Trove at Town Hall the Cootamundra Herald reports: Cootamundra s second Antique Fair hosted by the local Rotary Club, saw residents and visitors converge on the Town Hall to explore the many treasures. Special Guest, Rotary District Governor Peter Chivers opened the Fair and took the opportunity to convey what Rotary is all about. DG Peter said In a few words it s International Fellowship united to provide humanitarian service, to encourage high ethical standards in vocation as well as build peace and good will in the world. He continued by alluding to the unrest throughout the world, poverty, the personal suffering of many and linked all of this to the dedicated humanitarian Rotary programmes world wide and also to the important contributions that Rotary Clubs make locally within their own community.he added that the Rotary Club of Coootamundra does have an emphasis on its local community. He congratulated President David Moore and the committee for staging the Antique Fair. Deputy Mayor Lynne Magee also addressed the Official opening, thanking the Rotarians of Cootamundra for their ability to raise funds for charities and the good work they do in other areas, but also for hosting weekends such as the Antique Fair weekend to enhance the community. I thank them all for all the hard work and dedication that they all put in she said. Pictured at the official opening of the Antique Fair are President Davds Moore, District Governor Peter Chivers, Deputy Mayor Lynne Magee and Antuque Fair Co-ordinator Allan Grocott.

4 VALE PP FRANK ADAMS RC OF CONDOBLIN The Condoblin Community was deeply saddend by the sudden passing of PP Frank Adams as were his Rotary colleagues. Frank was a Foundation member of RC of Condoblin which was chartered in 1953 and his history as a Rotarian extended beyond that prior to his taking up residence in Condoblin. Fitting tributes were paid to Frank at his memorial service at the local Keith Memorial Presbyterian Church. He will be sadly missed and we extend our deepest sympathy to his family. AN APPEAL FOR BOOKS FOR CHILDREN IN STRUGGLING PACIFIC ISLANDS Chairman of D9700 Rotary Foundation Committee PDG Nevin Hughes has forwarded the following appeal which has come from Fiji seeking books for children throughout the struggling Island Countries in the Pacific. The South Pacific countries are in need of children s books. This is a pressing need. Low-cost reading materials suitable for all levels of the Primary schools are available including some science books. Is there a Rotary Club or some Rotary Clubs that could sponsor the purchase of these books for distribution to the outer Pacific Islands of Vanuatu, Solomon Islands, Fiji, Samoa, Tonga. Kiribati, Nauru. The costs range from Fiji Dollars 1.00 to Fiji Dollars $5.00.There are also big books for early reading at Fiji Dollars 8.75 each. Big orders can get discounts. Can you please assist Your Club may wish to repond to this appeal. If so please communicate direct with PDG Nevin Hughes (H&B) (F0 hugs@westserv.net.au ROTARY FRIENDSHIP EXCHANGE. a one-on--one experience for Rotarians in international goodwill and understanding. Those who have experienced the fellowship, friendship and joys of Rotary Friendship Exchange will understand what the under mentioned is all about. The message it conveys was ed to all clubs recently and we repeat it here in the hope that there will be a strong response to the opportunity available to visit British Columbia and experience first hand the happy times, fellowship and satisfaction to be experienced from Rotary Friendship Exchange. The message comes from PP Keith Rawsthorne Chairman of the D9700 Friendship Exchange Committee. Dear Fellow Rotarians, As Chair of D9700 Rotary Friendship Exchange (RFE) Committee, I want to gain your interest in RFE. If your club has not been involved in RFE I can tell you from having experienced two exchanges (to D1020, D1070 and D1220 in the UK and to D5030 and D5100 in the US) it is just a great way to travel, meet people of similar ideals and principles as yourself (and save a packet of money). Of course the most important and pleasing feature of RFE is the promotion and experience of Rotary friendship and goodwill through people-topeople contact across national boundaries. It works this way. In response to an invitation from another District a team of 8-14 people from this District (D9700) is formed to respond to that invitation. The host District "home hosts" our team for a period ranging from one to four weeks and the team moves from Club to Club within the District, staying in each Club about three or four days. Ideally the team hires transport at their arrival point in the District and takes itself from Club to Club in the host District. A team leader is elected before leaving Australia to liaise with the host District and to handle finance, etc. Usually members buy their own fares but make a contribution to the team bank so that the leader can arrange for transport and other incidental costs within the host District. Naturally the host Clubs will want to show off their locality with guides and itinerary - just as we do here when we host. You don't need to know your team members to start. Part of the fun is getting acquainted with delightful people with lasting friendships being made. It is optional to take extra holiday time before or after the RFE Exchange. Currently we have an invitation for a team from D9700 to visit British Columbia, Canada and possibly nearby Idaho in the US in May, Having been to Oregon/Washington in the northwest of the US, on our first RFE, I can certainly recommend this location. Firm friendships were formed and many of our hosts have since visited various team members in Australia on return visits. May, 2004 may seem a long way away but it is necessary now to gather a team because the hosting Districts are anxious to make their plans and arrangements to welcome us and see we have a good time. Therefore we urgently seek Expressions of Interest in this exchange from Rotarians and their partners or Rotarians on their own. If you are interested or need further information, please contact me via (kedor@westserv.net.au) or by phone ( ) as soon as possible and I will give you more details or forward a registration form to you. Yours in Rotary Friendship, PP Keith Rawsthorne For more information on RFE see page 97 of your D9700 Directory.
