In 2020, the congress will focus on a wide range of issues such as separate collection and recycling, waste treatment, marine litter and the circular economy. 3 INTERNATIONAL SOLID WASTE ASSOCIATION (ISWA) WORLD CONGRESS The ISWA World Congress is a global meeting which includes high level plenaries as well as technical site visits and a cultural and social programme where waste management professionals, government officials, industry leaders, policy makers, scientists and young professionals meet to exchange views and opinions to advance scientific and technical knowledge for sustainable solid waste management. Since its beginning, the ISWA World Congress has been considered as the industry s leading solid waste management event. 4 ABOUT THE ORGANISERS: NVRD AND THE CITY OF ROTTERDAM NVRD Uniting the Dutch waste management sector, the NVRD is a longstanding and highly active ISWA National Member. Founded in 1907, with over a hundred years of history and experience, NVRD is the largest Dutch waste management association. NVRD has a professional grade event-department, accountable for several larger and smaller events every year. The Netherlands as a country are increasingly committed to transform into a circular economy. This transition has been outlined in a dedicated programme entitled From waste to resource under the Dutch Green Growth Strategy and has been further developed in the Nationwide Circular Economy Approach, the NVRD being one of the partners. The aim of this programme is to reach new and unprecedented levels of waste reduction and recycling and to close material loops. A development that adds to the Netherlands being an ideal stage for the ISWA National Congress. ROTTERDAM The City of Rotterdam is a prominent member of the NVRD, represented in the NVRD-board. The City of Rotterdam is very aware of the need to use the world s resources more efficiently. That is why the city takes responsibility and actively promotes separation of waste before and after collection, maximising opportunities for re-use. The goal is to become a circular economy in The city s efforts are focused on circular procurement, transforming waste into resources, facilitating circular businesses and jobs in the port area as well as in the city, and transforming the city s s own processes from linear to circular. photo: Chris Bonis

5 TARGET AUDIENCE AND CONGRESS TOPICS The congress delegates will include waste professionals, industrialists, policy makers at all levels from around the globe, top executives and decision makers, researchers and entrepreneurs, and government personnel specialised in the field of solid waste management and circulair economy. The participants will be welcome to share their critical thinking and to discuss creative ideas on the featured issues of the congress. Conference topics will be developed by the programme committee in close cooperation with the STC and Working Group members. 7 ABOUT ROTTERDAM photo: 500 Watt WORLD PORT The earliest records of Rotterdam s history date back to the construction of a dam across the little Rotte River in In 1340, Rotterdam received its town charter. When the New Waterway was completed in 1872, giving Rotterdam an open connection to the sea via the Maas, the city developed into a world-class port. Rotterdam is currently one of the largest ports in the world and the home base for many important industries, including the petrochemical, pharmaceutical, banking and insurance, and hi-tech and science industry. Once a modest fishing village on the banks of the Rotte, Rotterdam grew to become the second-largest city in the Netherlands. With over 616,000 inhabitants (1.2 million including Greater Rotterdam), Rotterdam is a true metropolis on the Maas. The inhabitants of Rotterdam (Rotterdammers) are straightforward, humorous and hospitable people for whom a deal is a deal. For centuries they have been dealing with people from abroad; how else would Rotterdam have been able to secure its unique position in world trade and commerce? THE MAAS The Maas River continues to define the face of Rotterdam today, as a main waterway and as an attraction in its own right with an increasing number of restaurants and other entertainment venues springing up along the waterfront. The river is what divides the north and south sides of the city, linked by high-speed ferry boats and bridges that define the skyline. The Erasmus Bridge has become the iconic symbol of Rotterdam. Erasmus University Rotterdam, which ranks among the top universities of the world (especially in the medical and economic sciences) and the Erasmus MC, the largest medical centre in the Netherlands. ARCHITECTURE AND INNOVATION Although much of the city centre was destroyed in the bombing during the Second World War, Rotterdam started vigorous reconstruction efforts as soon as the war ended. The city had the courage to make a radical break with the past and head in a whole new direction. It was this dramatic turning point that gives Rotterdam the contemporary look it has today: spacious in design, with daring modern

Today, Rotterdam is still notable for its modern, innovative architecture with spectacular, ultra-modern high-rise buildings on an ever evolving skyline. ART, CULTURE, DINING AND NIGHTLIFE Rotterdam has an exceptionally well developed cultural infrastructure encompassing all major art forms: music, the visual arts, film, photography, architecture, the theatre and ballet. These cultural activities are supported by first-rate museums, galleries, theatres, concert halls, art schools and other educational institutes. They offer a broad range of high-quality art and culture to surprise and delight any visitor to the city. Rotterdam is also a lively place in the evenings. The city boasts a wide range of cafés, restaurants and clubs. Cafés and bars can be found on virtually every street and range from traditional pubs to contemporary grand cafés. They are the perfect place to enjoy a cup of coffee or a beer, glass of wine or typical Dutch drinks, such as jenever. Rotterdam also has a lot to offer culinary-wise. ROTTERDAM BY AIR In under 30 minutes, public transportation brings you to Rotterdam from either Schiphol Airport or Rotterdam The Hague Airport. Situated near Amsterdam, Schiphol Airport is a major international hub and transfers nearly 70 million passengers a year. In addition to regular flight connections the airport is equipped for private jets and governmental flights with VIP treatment. ROTTERDAM BY TRAIN International direct trains to Belgium, France, Great Britain and Germany depart many times a day from Rotterdam Central Station. Antwerp takes less than 30 minutes, Brussels one hour and ten minutes and Paris can be reached in two hours and 36 minutes. By ferry from the UK, Rotterdam is directly accessible via two connections: Harwich-Hook of Holland and Hull-Europoort or via Belgium and France. LOCAL PUBLIC TRANSPORT Despite its cosmopolitan style and facilities, Rotterdam s inner city is compact. The convention centres, a large number of hotels, shopping area, most museums and many other points of interest are within walking distance. The most inhabitants of Rotterdam either walk or use their bicycles! The Rotterdam Public Transport system comprises a network of bus and tramway services as well as a modern, efficient metro (underground) network. Rotterdam Central Station is a central hub, which is located within walking distance of the Rotterdam convention centres de Doelen ICC Rotterdam and Postillion Convention Centre WTC Rotterdam. Inexpensive tickets covering public transport within the Rotterdam area are available via the Convention Bureau or Tourist Information Centre and they are available for one or more days (Rotterdam Welcome Card).

Central Station is located within 10 minutes walk or by subway in 2 minutes.
