2 Ambrosia Apples Future Stars provides young champions of the future, the opportunity to experience a taste of competitive curling at its very best and meet with the top provincial and territorial teams in the sport. Ambrosia Apples Future Stars must be between the ages 8 and 18. There is no cost to enter with only one entry per person. The deadline to apply for the Ambrosia Apples Future Stars program is Nov future-stars/ Ambrosia ApplesFuture Stars will receive: The opportunity to meet their mentor and team, observe a team practice and take part in a pre-game ceremony; An official photograph with the team; A ticket to watch their team play (including two additional tickets for parents/guardians); A commemorative Ambrosia Apples Future Stars jacket; A 2018 Scotties Tournament of Hearts official event pin; and A tour of the TSN mobile production truck (subject to approval by TSN).

4 Meet some more of our sponsors About Ambrosia In the early 90s, a unique apple was discovered in Wilfrid and Sally Mennells orchard in the sun-drenched Similkameen Valley of British Columbia in Canada. A chance seedling grew among a row of Jonagold apples. When it bore its first fruit, the orchard workers tasted the new apple. It was like nothing they d ever tasted before. The Mennell family recognized this tree was special. The next year they were delighted when the apples were as perfect in appearance and taste as before. They had the apple tested, and it was found to be a completely new species, created by nature. Wilfrid Mennell named the bi-coloured apple Ambrosia, which in Greek mythology means food of the gods. Chance seedlings are extremely rare and less than a dozen of these chance seedlings have found their way to market in the past 50 years. Ambrosia is a result of one of those seedlings. In 1993, with the help of Summerland Varities (formerly the Okanagan Plant Improvement Corporation), the Mennells registered the apple and took it to market. This crisp, juicy apple quickly became a consumer favourite, and today the Ambrosia apple is grown and available for purchase around the world. The original British Columbia growers of Ambrosia created a council dedicated to marketing Ambrosia. The New Tree Fruit Varieties Development Council was formed in 2001 and continues to promote new varieties. Ambrosia Facts Ambrosia is a low-acid apple, which makes it easier for children and older people to digest. Ambrosia apples are a great source of both soluble and insoluble fiber, which has been shown to help lower cholesterol and aid in digestion. They are also low in calories and contain vitamins A and C, most of which is located in the skin. Ambrosias, like other apples, are loaded with health giving properties such as pectin, a cholesterol lowering soluble fibre, and anti-oxidants, which are good for preventing heart disease. Although Ambrosia is a sweet apple, official taste comparisons prove even the most devoted fans of tart apples love Ambrosia for its juiciness and crunchy texture. Ambrosia apples are currently grown in North America, Europe, Chile and New Zealand and available for purchase world-wide. 5 So, what s next? The Scotties Tournament of Hearts is still a few months away, but here s some important volunteer information to familiarize yourself with. Attend the 2018 Scotties Tournament of Hearts Once you ve received your volunteer kit, the final step is volunteering at the event! You will receive your volunteer schedule prior to the event, with all of the shifts that you are assigned. Remember that upon signing up, volunteers make a commitment of 30 hours and may be scheduled for up to that amount. If you have scheduling restrictions or preferences, it is important to let your Director know before they begin Volunteer Kit Once we ve set a date, we will contact you to pick up your volunteer kit. Your kit includes your volunteer pin, accreditation pass, volunteer handbook, and volunteer uniform. There will be more information about this in upcoming newsletters.

6 Helpful information from the City of Penticton Big event at the SOEC? Plan your trip. The South Okanagan Events Centre complex is home to some of the city s biggest events and attractions. If you are travelling to the SOEC for a big event, allow extra time and use this guide to plan your trip. PARK There are over 1,000 spaces to park at SOEC and another 1,000 in the surrounding lots and on the street. Public parking includes: 1. SOEC 2. RIVERSIDE PARK 3. LOCO LANDING 4. LAKAWANNA PARK 5.
