2 Objectives By the end of the class students should be able to do the following: List three resources common to Nigeria. Describe Nigeria s cultural diversity and what it means to the country. Discuss the road to independence for Nigeria and name it is key leader. Predict problems that Nigeria may face in the future due to its young population. Analyze the impact of Nigeria s diverse culture on its arts.

3 Geography of Nigeria Nigeria supports large rainforests and is active in the lumber industry. Nigeria is rich in iron, coal, tin, and most importantly Oil. But oil has brought both wealth and trouble. Nigeria takes its name from the Niger river. Rivers divide Nigeria into three regions. These regions also are populated by three distinct ethnic groups.

4 The Nigerian People Nigeria takes its name from the Niger river, and is divided into three regions. The north is home to the Muslim Hausa and Fulani people. The Southwest is home to the Yoruba, and the Southeast is home to the Ibo. Many smaller ethnic groups are scattered throughout the country. In all Nigeria is home to over 250 ethnic groups speaking 6 major languages (including English).

5 Political Development- Independence In Nigeria there was a lot of strong resistance to British imperialism. In 1929 market women led violent demonstrations against imperialism. The Nationalist leader Nnamdi Azikiwe (ehn NAHM dee ah ZEE KAY way) called for political unity in Nigeria. In 1960 Nigeria gained independence.

6 Political Development- military rule After independence the government moved back and forth between military and civilian rule. Under military rule critics were often silenced. In 1999 civilian rule was finally restored. A former general as named president, and the government is trying to rebuild the economy and reduce the many ethnic, and religious tensions in the nation of Nigeria.

7 Economic Development Nigeria has had mixed success developing its economy. Civil war and debt hurt, oil revenues helped but led to corruption. Investing in industry, agriculture and education have helped but led to large debts. They have a mixed economy with the government owning oil and other major industries. They have diversified building new industries and exporting cash crops, but they still have to improve Nigeria has potential, but reforms are needed.

8 Population Growth More than 127 million people live in Nigeria, but like much of Africa a large portion of the population is less than 15 years old. This means they will need to be fed, educated, and some day soon they will need to have jobs. Many younger Nigerians prefer to live in cities, but cities often suffer from poverty, and crime. The government is encouraging people to stay on farms. They are doing so by keeping crop prices stable.

9 Music and Literature Many traditions of Nigeria s diverse people are evident in the arts. Benin influenced sculpture is evident. The music and instruments are innovative and gaining world recognition. Novelists and playwrights have also found inspiration in traditional Nigerian culture. In 1986 Wole Soyinka, became the first African to win the Nobel Prize for literature.
