4 THE REGIONS OF SUBSAHARAN AFRICA The Transition Zone region encompasses not only four whole countries, but parts of others, resulting in many countries divided between large Christian and Muslim populations.

7 I10- Southern Africa SOUTHERN AFRICA REGION Six of the ten states are landlocked. This region is the richest in SubSaharan Africa, with none of the volcanic or earthquake issues found in other regions, and two major river systems. (Zambezi & Orange-Vaal)

8 I10- Southern Africa SOUTHERN AFRICA REGION A period of rapid population growth followed by the AIDS pandemic, civil wars, political corruption and instability, and worldwide economic competition all contributed to the poor status of many nations of the region.
