Implementatin Prcess The Schl has develped levels f apprpriate respnses and sanctins. Any breach f the Cde f Cperatin will initiate a restrative apprach. 7 Asthma Care Plan fr Schls Outdr Schl Bgng Staff are trained in asthma first aid (see belw) and can prvide rutine asthma medicatin as authrised in this care plan. 1. Sit the persn upright. a. 12 When Yu Are At Bgng Wrking with Our Teachers During timetabled activities the Bgng teachers will be respnsible fr all lgistical and practical decisin making with respect t the mvements and skill develpment f the grup. The visiting teachers rle will be t assist in the management f students and where apprpriate team teach with the Bgng staff. Fr winter prgrams, prir skiing experience is essential and requires strenuus physical activity, thus a reasnable level f fitness is expected frm visiting teachers. Visiting Teacher Survey On a Thursday evening all visiting teachers are t cmplete an nline survey. This will take abut 10 minutes and is valued by ur schl fr further imprvement. Winter General Prgram Our ski prgrams are aimed at beginners. Students wh can ski well may nt find ur prgram suitable fr them. All skiing is at Falls Creek, and the students are transprted t and frm the resrt each day. Snwsheing (1/2-1 day) Snwsheing is an ideal way fr students t mve arund withut requiring the skills needed fr skiing. Students may explre ff track amngst the Sub-Alpine frest in a quieter manner r mve up and dwn steeper terrain. Crss Cuntry Skiing (1-2 days) Crss cuntry skiing enables the skier t ski uphill and yet still allw glide n flat r dwnhill. Students are instructed in the basics f crss cuntry skiing which will enable them t explre different aspects and areas f the alpine envirnment by way f a ski tur. Dwnhill Skiing (1-2 days) Basic dwnhill skiing skills are intrduced t students. The first day f dwnhill skiing invlves instructin with Bgng staff in the mrning and after lunch a 2 hur lessn with the Ski Schl. One f the schls teachers' accmpanies the grup during the ski schl lessn. Evening Sessins A selectin is made frm the fllwing sessins: Bgng at night; ski gear/skills prep; study night; Parks Victria talks; DVD night; envirnmental studies talks directed twards the prgram aim. There may be a night where the visiting staff will be required take an activity sessin. Page 12 f 18
13 Summer Adventure Activities Belw is a brief descriptin f sme activities that maybe in yur prgram. If yu wish t view students participating in activities please refer t ur website. Many f the activities are cnducted in remte and rugged lcatins and in envirnments subject t severe weather and ther natural hazards. In the event f injury r illness, access t cmmunicatins r emergency services may be limited r nt available fr significant perids f time. This may result in delays in injured r sick grup members accessing mre definitive care. Rck-climbing & Abseiling intrductin An intrductin t the techniques and skills f climbing and abseiling cnducted n a number f artificial rck walls in and arund the Bgng Campus. Students may be invlved in belaying ther students under active supervisin and after training and assessment by teachers. Rck-climbing & Abseiling extensin - Students are taken t a site n the Bgng High Plains where they have the pprtunity t extend the climbing and abseiling they have dne at the Campus. This is nrmally dne as a half day activity cmbined with a half day f bike riding. Orienteering Students are intrduced t Orienteering (navigatin using a map and cmpass). They prgress frm a simple curse arund the Campus t a mre cmplex and challenging set f curses in the frest area arund Bgng Village. Please Nte: due t the nature f the activity, there are times when the students are nt directly supervised by a teacher. Rgaining - This is similar t rienteering. Students team up fr a fur t five hur challenge t test themselves within a defined area n the Bgng High Plains. Students are briefed n safety and lst prcedures, and carry radis mnitred by teachers. This allws students t take n leadership, initiative, teamwrk and respnsibility in an alpine setting. Please Nte: due t the nature f the activity, there are times when the students are nt directly supervised by a teacher. Caneing - Caneing is cnducted n Lake Guy, which adjins the Campus. The students are intrduced t the basic methds f flat water caneing t enable them t explre the lake envirnment. White Water Rafting - This activity invlves students paddling inflatable rafts n white water rapids, n rivers up t a grade 3 (mderate) standard. Students may be in a bat with an adult guide, r in a self-guided bat, supervised by guides in supprt craft, depending n river cnditins and educatinal gals. Rivers accessed include the Mitta Mitta and Snwy River, and sme sectins f these rivers are remte and difficult t access via vehicle r n ft. Creek Walking - This invlves students fllwing a river bed upstream by mving frm rck t rck, wading and walking alng the river bank. It is dne at Bgng Village in the Rcky Valley stream. It has ready access t areas abve the nrmal fld line ver the length f the activity. High Rpes - Bgng has a well-develped High Rpes Curse cnstructed in a frest setting adjacent t the Campus. A new curse was cnstructed after the 2003 bushfires and cmprises 12 activities. Bike Riding - Bike riding is cnducted n the Bgng High Plains using existing trails. It prvides the pprtunity fr students t enjy the spectacular scenery and envirnment f the high cuntry. Instructin, practice sessin and bike check is cnducted prir t the tur. Pineering - Pineering is an initiative activity sessin where students are taught a number f knts and lashings that allw their grup t slve the prblem f crssing a lw creek by cnstructing a simple bridge. Initiative Activities - These activities develp initiative, trust, c-peratin, grup participatin and self-cnfidence. Envirnmental Studies - (Bgng Nights & Bgng s Backyard) These sessins lk at the eclgy f the area and incrprate presentatins and student practical wrk n the land use issues, histry, flra, fauna, climate, water and gelgy assciated with the Alpine envirnment. A blindflded 'sense trail' in the bush is als used t intrduce envirnmental cncepts. Overnight Bushwalk - Bushwalks are nrmally cnducted n the Bgng High Plains. Students hike in grups f 12, accmpanied by ne Bgng Teacher and ne Visiting Teacher. Walks can visit a number f histric cattleman s huts and envirnmentally sensitive sites en rute. Students ck fr themselves using lightweight stves under supervisin. Bushwalks are preceded by a hike preparatin sessin where students discuss the bushwalk and are given infrmatin, training, equipment, and fd required fr a safe and enjyable experience. Page 13 f 18
14 General Infrmatin Outdr Schl - Bgng is a schl staffed, and funded by the Department f Educatin and Training (DET) and prvides prgrams fr Years P 12 students frm Gvernment Schls thrughut Victria. The Bgng Campus is situated in Bgng Village, Nrth-East Victria. This is lcated 16 km frm Munt Beauty and 15 km frm bth the Falls Creek ski resrt and the Bgng High Plains. Bgng Village is surrunded by the Alpine Natinal Park. Bgng Campus is 380 km frm Melburne and takes arund 6 hur drive by bus. Physical Fitness fr the Prgram The activities undertaken can be strenuus and it is strngly advised that students and visiting teachers undertake a planned cmprehensive fitness prgram as part f their preparatin fr their prgram. Student Expectatins The fllwing shuld be made clear t students befre their departure frm schl: Smking, nn-prescribed drugs and alchl are strictly prhibited! Students will fllw a tight prgram leaving them little free time. Bgng is a schl perated by the (DET), has a set curriculum and is nt a hliday centre. Accmmdatin Students and visiting teachers are accmmdated in a tw-stry Ldge. Twenty-eight students (tw per rm) and tw visiting teachers (VTs- a single rm each) can be accmmdated n each flr. Each student's rm is furnished with tw single beds, mattresses (the schl will supply the bttm sheet students are t bring a sleeping bag & pillw), plus a wardrbe. All buildings are heated and facilities include mdern bathrms, indr and utdr recreatin areas, drying rms and a dining rm. Facilities (i.e. wheelchair ramps and specialised bathrms/tilets) are prvided fr students with physical disabilities. Refer t the Outdr Schl website fr mre infrmatin. Catering The Campus emplys a chef and assistant wh prvide all meals and specifically cater fr the tastes and appetites f teenagers. Fr catering purpses, the actual numbers f students and staff frm each schl needs t be sent t the Campus tw weeks in advance with any special dietary requirements. Transprt Schls are required t arrange fr return transprt between the schl and Bgng. The Outdr Schl recmmends Falls Creek Cach Service fr their reliability and experience with times fr getting t Bgng. Lcal transprt during the prgram may be either self-drive using schl vehicles, r by cach. The High Plains Rad frm Mt Beauty t Falls Creek is declared hazardus frm the Queen s birthday weekend until the end f the snw seasn and requires a special bus licence t drive n it. Sick Students Shuld a student(s) be unable t take part in the prgram, then a visiting teacher may be required t supervise them at the Campus. Bgng Campus has a sick bay fr dealing with first aid needs. Telephne Inward phne calls are received between 8.30am and 4.30pm. Outging calls may be made any cnvenient time by staff r students if needed. Students are discuraged frm calling r receiving calls during the prgram. Bgng has an answering machine at times when the ffice is unattended. An after-hurs phne number fr emergencies nly is prvided n the answering machine. All Bgng teachers have phnes fr safety during prgram.
