4 CAMPOREE THEME: SURVIVAL IN THE LOWCOUNTRY MARSHES YOU AND YOUR PATROL HAVE BECOME STRANDED ON A LOWCOUTRY ISLAND WHEN YOU ARE OUT HUNTING PIRATE TREASURE WITH A MAP YOU HAVE FOUND. TO REACH THE NEAREST TOWN YOU WILL NEED TO CROSS VAST MARSHS AND SAVANNAHS. YOU RECYLE AND REPURPOSE MATERIALS YOU FIND ALONG THE BEACH AND MARSHS EDGES TO BUILD A SLED TO PULL YOUR SALVAGED EQUIPMENT FROM YOUR BOAT. AS YOU VENTURE ACROSS THE MARSHES, YOUR LEADERSHIP, TEAM WORK, KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS YOU HAVE LEARNED AS A SCOUT WILL BE PUT TO THE TEST. YOU WILL USE THE KNOTS AND LASHES YOU PRACTICED AS A TENDERFOOT, SECOND CLASS AND FIRST CLASS SCOUT ARE NOW PUT TO THE TEST AS YOU CROSS OVER A CREEK FULL OF ALLIGATORS. YOUR RESCUE KNOTS WILL COME IN HANDY WHEN ONE OF YOUR PATROL MEMBERS STRAYS OFF THE TRAIL INTO A BOG OF QUICK SAND WHILE HE WAS CHASING A TOAD. YOUR FIRST AID SKILLS WILL BE TESTED ON TREATMENT OF HYPERTHERMIA, DEHYDRATION, STRAINS, AND SPRAINS FROM THE TREK. YOU MAY EVEN HAVE TO SPLINT A FRACTURE AND CARRY A PATROL MEMBER OUT ON A STRETCHER. TO STAY WARM AND COOK YOUR FOOD ALONG THE WAY, YOU WILL BUILD A FIRE WITH MATCHES OR A FLINT AND STEEL USING DRY TENDER AND WOOD FOUND ALONG THE WAY. WHEN A STORM APPROACHES, YOU WILL USE YOUR SKILLS A PITCHING A SHELTER USING A TARP YOU FOUND. YOU PAUSE ON YOUR TREK TO SEACH FOR THE PIRATES TREASURE THAT YOU HAD SET OUT FOR THAT FATEFULL DAY. SO AS A BOY SCOUT OF THE ETIWAN DISTRICT, HELP YOUR PATROL FIND ITS WAY TO TOWN FROM THIS REMOTE AND Desolate BEACH.

5 Who s Invited? All registered Boy Scouts, Webelo Scouts, and Venturing Crews and their Leaders. Site Location: Sewee Coastal Retreat, 7407 Doar Road, Awendaw, SC Directions: From Charleston; Take US 17 North to Doar Road. Travel about 1.5 miles. Sewee Coastal Reserve is on the right. Theme: Theme for the Camporee is SURVIVAL SKILLS Awards: Awards will be given for first, and second place in all competitions. Every paid participant will receive a patch for this Camporee. Overall winning Unit will receive the Camp Master Award. Restroom: Restroom are located on the property as well as water and showers. You are to keep them clean at-all-times. No Adult may enter restrooms if occupied by a Scout and no Scout shall enter the restrooms occupied by an Adult. A sign will be placed on the door signifying who is in it. Trash: We should leave the campsites cleaner than we found them. Leave No Trace will be exercised throughout the camp. PACK IT IN. PACK IT OUT. Do not use the trash receptacle on the camp grounds. Campsites: Each unit will be assigned a campsite. Open flame fires will be permitted. Since there are no established fire rings, above ground fire pits, pits or fire mounds shall be used. Fire area shall be repaired upon break of camp. Water: Water is available near the Tin Shed and Bathhouse. Troops should bring containers for gathering water. Adult Supervision: Two deep leadership is required for all troops. Family Visitation: As in the past, each unit is welcome to invite their scout s families to visit the events during the weekend. All visitors must depart camp prior to taps. Trading Post: A trading Post will be established near the Host Troops camp. Scouts will have an opportunity to purchase items during free time and lunch. Campfire Program: Saturday evening campfire is a fun event, so invite your parents to this event. Each unit will be responsible for at least one skit or song. All skits and songs will be evaluated for appropriate content. The OA dancing Team will be here and we will have a OA Tap Out Ceremony. Taps: As Adult Leaders, we should set an example for our Scouts and observe taps at 10:30 PM. Lights out and all quiet by 11:00 PM. Reveille will be at 7:00 AM. Parking: Parking of vehicles will be in a designated area. No vehicles will be permitted in campsites after 9:00 PM Friday night. Campsites with vehicles in them will incur penalties on campsite inspection. Uniforms: This is considered an activity, so Scout T-Shirts may be worn. Recommended. Class A uniforms are encouraged for travel to and from camp. Class A uniforms are required for all flag ceremonies and Scouts own service

6 THE EVENTS MARSH BUGGY INSPECTION (Think of a Klondike Sled, but you will need to add wheels)) Staff Equipment: Weigh in at Registration ( 25 lbs., 12 wheels) Marsh Buggy Equipment: See list below Scoring: Sled Quality, Marsh Buggy Equipment Time: 10 minutes maximum Patrol presents fully loaded Marsh Buggy for judging: construction, decoration, weight, wheel size; PATROL FLAG:(patrol name, troop, district, council, design) EQUIPMENT: Notebook/Pen, 1 Patrol First Aid Kit w/ Supplies for Sunburn and Hyperthermia, Supplies for Splint/Stretcher, Supplies to Make and Tie Splints, Supplies for Distress Signal, Matches/Flint and Steel, Supplies for Emergency Shelter (Tarp), 1 Gallon of Water, 5 Wooden Staves, 6, Trash Bag, 1 Compass per Scout, Scout Pocket Knife, Equipment to Make a Matchless Fire, Fuel Wood to Build Two Small Fire. Kindling and Tinder, 1 Boy Scout Handbook, Material to Make Stretcher (with above staves), Eight Pieces of 1/4 to 3/8-Inch Rope, 6 Feet Long, Suitable for Splicing), organization of gear (diamond hitch) PATROL CHEER Decisions of Judges are final. Counts as up to three event awards toward the Camp Master Award.

7 LOWCOUNTRY MARSH RELAY THEME: Teamwork Staff Equipment: 6 x 1 x 6 long planks, x5 6 ropes 1. A set of planks, 6feet long with rope handle will be provided to each patrol. Four patrol members will be position one foot on each plank and hold a rope in each hand. 2. Each patrol begins to move the planks by synchronous stepping and pulling from the starting line to the midpoint (25 distance) 3. At the midpoint, 4 new patrol members (or as Many As possible) turn the planks around to return them to the starting line in a like fashion. 4. Competitors will not be allowed to attach themselves to the planks or rope in any fashion. A patrol must start over from the starting line or midpoint if any of the Team members touch the ground. CRAB POT RUN THEME: Team Work 1. Using empty sled, the entire patrol races the sled over a predetermined course. 2. Times of all patrols will be kept. 3. Decisions of the judges are final.

8 FOUL WEATHER SHELTER THEME: Survival Staff Equipment: None Marsh Buggy Equipment: Supplies for shelter. Scoring: Quality, Time Time Limit: 10 Minutes 1. Patrol prepares an emergency shelter using no standard tents or poles. 2. Decisions of the judges are final. STRANDED ON THE BEACH Theme: Codes Staff Equipment: None Marsh Buggy Equipment: Supplies for a Signal Time.: 10 Minutes Maximum 1. Patrol demonstrates recognized distress signal. 2. Decisions of Judges Final. STUCK IN THE PLUFF MUDD Theme: Knots Staff Equipment: 3@10 x 3/8 rope 2 Stakes set 20 ft. apart Marsh Buggy Equipment: None Time: 10 Minutes 3. Patrol representative tosses one end to the victim. Victim ties bowline around waist. 1. One patrol member is placed in the Pluff Mudd. 2. Patrol ties ropes together using square knots.

9 CROSS THE GULLY Theme: Lashings Staff Equipment: 3 6ft each 2 ft. long lashing rope 6 ft. long 3/8 ropes Marsh Buggy Equipment: None Time: 15 minutes 1. Team lashes saplings together in an A-Frame 2. Tie four ropes to top of A-Frame. 3. Petrol Leader tries to walk the A-Frame across Gully while his patrol steadies it with the guy lines. 4. At the other end, dismantle, line up and give loud yell. Fastest time and proper lashings wins. Decision of Judges final HUNTING PIRATE TREASURE Theme: Compass Staff Equipment: Wooden Stakes, Sharpie to put numbers on Stakes, 50 long string or tape. EXAMPLE OF COMPLETED COURSE Each participant receives an instruction card. This card tells the players their starting positions as well as bearings which direct them from marker to marker around the course. Each player copies down the letter on each marker along their route. The sixletter code word thus produced is checked against the respective code word on the answer sheet. No two instruction cards describe the same route.

10 BROKEN BONE RACE Theme: First Aid Staff Equipment: None Marsh Buggy Equipment: First Aid Kit, supplies to make a stretcher Time: 15 minutes? For teams of Five. Four Scouts of each Team stand at the starting line equipped with a stretcher and triangular bandages. The fifth scout (the victim) is at the far end of the course. 25 feet. On the word go, each stretcher team races to its patient, ascertains the nature of his injury (which is written on a label attached to the patient) treats him and conveys him back to the starting line. The team which returns first with the injury properly treated wins.

11 SURVIVAL FIRE Theme: Fire Starting Staff Equipment: 2 4 Stakes 4 foot tall Binder twin 18 inch measuring device Rakes, shovel, water bucket Natural fuel supply, tinder Stop Watch Marsh Buggy Equipment: None Scoring: Completion Time Time: 15 minutes maximum 1. Patrol is given 5 minutes to gather natural fuel. 2. Patrol is given 5 minutes to lay and light fire (below lower string 3. Upper string must burn within 5 minutes 4. Decisions of Judges are Final KNOTTY TRAIL Staff Equipment: Several different sizes of rope and line Marsh Buggy Equipment: None Time: 10 Minutes Tie together several pieces of rope of various thicknesses using several different knots. Use a clove hitch to tie one end of the rope to a tree and another knot to tie the other end to a second tree. 1. Give patrols about 2 minutes to walk along the rope from tree to tree and back again. 2. Silently they observe the different knots and try to remember what they are, before huddling to list the knots in the correct order, including the knots used around the trees. 3. Extra points to the patrol which can tell you how many ropes were used.

13 ETIWAN SPRING CAMPOREE MARCH 24-26, 2017 CAMPOREE COMPETITIONS 1. Campsite Inspections: Each Campsite will be inspected Saturday afternoon. A total of 100 pints can be earned in this competition. Overall campsite will be awarded. 2. Event Competitions: Each event will be judged separately and three placements will be awarded for each event. Team work and points will be used for determining each placement. 3. Spirit Award: Throughout the day the activity coordinators will be judging each unit on their enthusiasm, helpfulness and overall Scout spirit. Each unit s spirit will count toward overall score. Overall winner will be awarded. 4. Desert Contest: Each unit will be required to have an entry Saturday night. Entries will be judged by originality, taste and presentation. Winner will be awarded. 5. Overall Award: Total points will be tallied and award will be given. Point total determined as follows: Campsite Inspection 25% Spirit Award 15% Desert Award 10% Event Competitions 50% Total 100% OVERALL WINNER DETERMINED BY HIGHEST TOTAL
