2 SEARCH AND RESCUE INFORMATION - WEEKLY PERIOD: 11 AUG 14 TO 17 AUG 14 DATE/TIME INCIDENT # 11 10: : : : : : : : : : PEP ELT/ # PEP LOCATED REGION INCIDENT #VICTIMS VOL ALIVE DEAD NO COMMENTS SWE LAND Pemberton SAR members responded to search for two hikers that were reported overdue from their hike of the Stein Traverse Trail from Pemberton to Lytton. Subjects were located in good condition and were flown back to Pemberton. SWE LAND Squamish SAR members responded to rescue a female with a fractured ankle halfway up The Chief trail. The subject was carried out by stretcher and transferred to BCAS. SEA LAND Kaslo SAR members responded to rescue an injured quad rider in the Healy Creek FSR area near the Wagner Mine. Subject was airlifted out and transferred to BCAS. LAND Central Okanagan SAR members responded to rescue an injured horseback rider on the beach near the Okanagan Stables in Kelowna. Subject was packaged and transported out by boat for transfer to BCAS Penticton, 11 Naramata and 5 Peachland Fire Dept members responded to investigate reports of a flare sighting on Okanagan Lake. Members located some debris in the water, but nothing else. VIR LAND SAR members fro Cowichan Valley, Campbell River and North Shore Rescue responded to rescue an injured hiker in the Maple Mountain area. North Shore Rescue rescued the subject via helicopter. The patient was flown out to the staging area where he was transferred to BCAS. VIR LAND SAR members from Nanaimo, Cowichan, Arrowsmith and Ladysmith responded to search for a missing distraught male in the Nanaimo Lakes area. The subject was not located and SAR members were stood down pending RCMP consultation with their dive team. SWE LAND Chilliwack SAR members responded to search for a missing hiker near Radium Lake. The subject was located suffering from heat exhaustion. SAR members were able to stabilize the subject and transported him out via helicopter to staging area to be handed off to the RCMP members of Naramata Fire Rescue and Penticton Fire Marine Rescue responded to rescue an unconscious male on Okanagan Lake. The subject was resuscitated. 3 3 Lake Country Fire members responded following reports of an overturned boat in the south end of Kal Lake near Winfield. On arrival at the scene, they determined the vessel to be a derelict with no one in need of rescue :47 SWE LAND Hope and 8 Chilliwack SAR members responded

3 : : : : : : : : : : to rescue an injured male that had fallen down an embankment near Hope. Subject was brought up the embankment by the rope rescue team and was then airlifted out to the airport for transport to hospital. VIR LAND Comox Valley SAR members responded to search for an 8 year old child missing in Courtenay. The child was located by police and returned to family members. VIR LAND Campbell River SAR members responded to RCMP request to rescue a party of six people lost south-west of Burman Lake in Strathcona Park. The subjects were rescued and dropped off at the trail head near their vehicle. SWE LAND 7 7 Mission SAR members responded to investigate reports of a vehicle over the embankment 3 km north of Sylvester Road in Mission. SAR members found that the vehicle was empty. The surrounding area was searched with nothing found. SAR was stood down pending further RCMP investigation. LAND Vernon SAR members responded to search for an elderly female suffering from dementia missing in the Eagle Rock Road area of Armstrong. SAR was stood down when the subject was located in good condition by RCMP. SEA 5 5 Nelson SAR members responded to search for a missing female at the Airport bluffs. SAR was stood down within 10 minutes when police ascertained that there was no missing person. SEA LAND Golden SAR members responded via helicopter to Fairy Meadows to rescue a male suffering a severe head injury. The subject was recovered and brought to Golden to be transferred to BCAS members of Kelowna Marine Rescue responded to investigate reports of an overturned boat on Okanagan Lake near the Kelowna Yacht Club. On arrival at the scene, the team found a power boat operator had swam safely to shore and the team assisted in towing boat in. LAND Penticton SAR and 6 PEP Air members responded to search for a missing male hiker in a canyon near Summerland. Extensive searches by ground, water and air failed to find any sign of the subject within the canyon and RCMP have stood down the search pending new information. NEA LAND South Cariboo SAR members responded to rescue an injured female motorist that had walked away from a two vehicle motor vehicle incident at Canim-Hendrix Lake Road and Spuraway Road near Forest Grove. The injured subject was located and transferred to BCAS. LAND Vernon SAR members responded to assist RCMP with searching for a vehicle containing a mother and five children lost in the King Edwards Lake area near Vernon. SAR located the six

VIR LAND SAR members from Arrowsmith, Campbell River, Comox, Nanaimo, Ladysmith, Port Alberni and Cowichan Valley responded to search for a woman who had left her vehicle on Pym Street. SAR was stood down when the RCMP discovered the subject was in contact with family members. SWE SAR members from Ridge Meadows, Surrey and Coquitlam resumed the search for a female missing in the Gold Creek Falls-Golden Ears Park area of Maple Ridge. No sign of the missing women was found, but they were able to eliminate an area of interest. RCMP may request the team respond at a future date after water levels recede. SWE LAND Squamish SAR members responded to assist BCAS with a mountain biker that was injured when he fell off his bike during a race on the 2 Strokes Smoke Trail. SAR was stood down by BCAS. SWE LAND Squamish SAR members responded to search for a missing 24 year old male in the Elaho River area near Squamish. The subject was located unharmed. SEA LAND Fernie SAR members responded to search for a missing fisherman near the Sulphur Springs Campground. SAR was stood down after the subject was able to make it home on his own members of Lifeboat Rescue 1 assisted BCAS to reach an injured subject with uncontrolled bleeding on Neilson Beach on Shuswap Lake near Sicamous. Subject received treatment and remained on site Lifeboat Rescue 1 members responded to a crashed speedboat at Hungry Cove on Shuswap Lake. One subject with injuries was located and transported back to Sicamous for transfer to BCAS. Responders will resume searching for the second subject on 18 Aug. ONGOING VIR LAND members of Campbell River SAR responded to investigate a spot beacon sounding in Strathcona Park. SAR members flew into the area and the subject was located, packaged, transported out and transferred to BCAS. LAND Penticton SAR members responded to rescue an injured male on a trail near the research centre in Summerland. SAR was stood down en route as the subject was rescued by fire and ambulance crews. VIR LAND Powell River SAR members responded to assist a female who had sustained multiple stings after stepping on a bee's nest while hiking on the Sunshine Coast Trail. SAR was stood down en route after BCAS was able to access the patient. SWE LAND Lions Bay SAR members responded by helicopter to rescue a male hiker who twisted his ankle while hiking the Brunswick Trail. The subject was rescued by SAR and drove himself to the hospital with a

5 17 16: : : WEEK TOTAL YEAR TO DATE sprained ankle. SWE LAND Sunshine Coast SAR members responded to rescue an injured female on the Suncoaster Trail in Sechelt. SAR was stood down upon arrival as the BCAS personnel had managed to walk the woman out. SEA AIR ELT 2 2 PEP Air members responded to JRCC's request to investigate an ELT sounding in the Castlegar/Nelson/Nakusp area. JRCC also dispatched their Buffalo. Members were stood down when the source of the signal appeared to be coming from Washington or Oregon and the incident was turned over to U.S. authorities. SWE LAND North Shore Rescue members responded to search for a lost hiker on Dog Mountain near Seymour Mountain in North Vancouver. SAR was stood down after the subject walked out on his own ELT ELT - 11

6 WEEKLY INCIDENT REPORT AUG 2014 EVIDENCE SEARCH On 12 Aug 14, an incident was opened to cover Fort St. James SAR as they provided assistance to the RCMP with an evidence search scheduled for 16 Aug. MINE ACCIDENT On 12 Aug 14, an incident was opened to track the coordination of provincial resources with regard to the Mount Polley tailings dam breach incident. MISCELLANEOUS On 11 Aug 14, Salmon Arm Highway Rescue (extrication team) responded to a report of a young boy trapped in playground equipment in Salmon Arm. On 13 Aug 14, Canal Flats Fire Dept. responded to a cabin explosion in the White Tail Lake area of Canal Flats. On 13 Aug 14, the Emergency Program Coordinator (EPC) for the Regional District East Kootenays (RDEK) opened a reception centre for the evacuated residents that were displaced due to a gas leak in the Fernie area. Fortis BC responded and shut in the line and residents were allowed to return to their homes a short time later. On 17 Aug 14, Summerland Fire Dept. responded at the request of BCAS to rescue an individual who suffered injuries after falling from a tree down an embankment. URBAN INTERFACE FIRE On 11 Aug 14, Golden EPC activated their Emergency Operations Centre (EOC) in response to a fire in the Bobby Burns Lodge area. An estimated 100 people were put on evacuation alert in the immediate area. On 11 Aug 14, a grass fire in the Baynes Lake area prompted local fire officials to issue an evacuation order for local residences. The EPC activated their EOC and a reception centre in Jaffray. On 11 Aug 14, an incident was opened for the Shingle Creek fire (K50480) southwest of Penticton. There were homes 400 metres to the west of the fire but they were not threatened at that time. On 12 Aug 14, an Evacuation Alert was issued for an area west of Alexis Creek in the Cariboo Regional District due to a fire (C51045) burning on the north side of Hwy 24. On 12 Aug 14, the EPC for the Bulkley Nechako Regional District (BNRD) requested an incident be opened to deal with an Evacuation Alert, Evacuation Order being issued as a result of the China Nose fire (R20116).

7 On 14 Aug 14, an Evacuation Alert was issued for the Wet'suwet'en First Nations in the BNRD due to a fire burning in the China Nose area (R20116). On 15 Aug 14, an Evacuation Order and Declaration of Local State of Emergency was issued for Electoral Area B in the Peace River Regional District (PRRD) as a result of a 500 hectare fire on Pink Mountain (G80439). On 17 Aug 14, the BNRD issued an Evacuation Alert for the Chuchi Lake area due to an interface fire (G50470).
