2 SEARCH AND RESCUE INFORMATION - WEEKLY PERIOD: 21 JUL 14 TO 27 JUL 14 DATE/TIME INCIDENT # 13 22: UPDATE 19 12: UPDATE 20 16: : : : : : : : : : PEP ELT/ # PEP LOCATED REGION INCIDENT #VICTIMS VOL ALIVE DEAD NO COMMENTS VIR LAND Comox Valley SAR members went back out on 26 July to research the areas of high probability one more time. Nothing further was located and SAR was closed. VIR OCEAN 4 4 PEP Air spotters provided assistance on the 442 Buffalo while they continued to search for the missing vessel in the Port Hardy area on 21 July Mission SAR members responded to an injured wake boarder on Stave Lake. The subject was brought out and transferred to BCAS for treatment and transport. LAND Pemberton SAR members responded to rescue an injured horseback rider in the Vine Road area of Pemberton. The subject was picked up and transported to the clinic with multiple non life threatening injuries Hope SAR members assisted the RCMP with a distressed person in the Coquihalla River. The subject was rescued and passed to RCMP Kent Harrison SAR members responded to two stranded boaters on Long Island. The subjects were transported back to the dock in Harrison Hot Springs. LAND North Shore Rescue members responded to search for two lost hikers on Dog Mountain near Mt Seymour. SAR located the two subjects in good condition shortly after activation Kent Harrison SAR members responded to search for missing jet skier on Harrison Lake. The subject was located in good condition by the SAR team and returned to shore. LAND Keremeos SAR members were contacted to search for a couple who were missing from the scene of a domestic disturbance in the Ashnola Road area of Keremeos. SAR was stood down when the couple arrived at the police station having heard they had been reported missing. NEA Peachland Marine Rescue members responded to a report of a Seadoo operator in distress. Peachland Marine Rescue arrived at the same time as a friend of the operator who towed the subject to shore Quesnel SAR members were stood down while mustering to assist RCMP with a distressed swimmer in the Fraser River near the Ceal Tingley Park area of Quesnel. The swimmer self rescued. LAND Whistler SAR members responded to rescue an injured mountain biker from the Comfortably Numb biking trail. The subject was air lifted to the hospital after being treated on site by a medical practitioner on site.

3 22 20: : : : : : : : : : : : LAND Kent Harrison and 9 Chilliwack SAR members responded to search for two missing people in Sasquatch Provincial Park. They were located in good condition in a remote area with no cell coverage. SEA LAND Nelson SAR members responded to search for a missing 4 year old in Nelson. The child was located unharmed and the SAR team stood down. LAND COSAR members responded to search for a missing 89 year old male suffering from dementia in Mission Creek Park. He was located in good condition and handed over to RCMP to be reunited with family. LAND Vernon SAR members assisted RCMP search for a missing male in the Lumby area. The team was stood down when the subject was located deceased by a resident walking their dog Vernon SAR members responded to a report of an overturned pontoon boat on Okanagan Lake near Adventure Bay. The SAR team was stood down by the RCMP when it was ascertained that the boat was not overturned Vernon SAR members responded to rescue a windsurfer in distress on Okanagan Lake in the Eastside Road area. The windsurfer was assisted by a passing boater and the SAR team was stood down. LAND Kamloops, 2 Nicola Valley SAR and 4 PEP Air members responded to search for two missing quadders in the Campbell Creek Road area of rural south Kamloops. Both subjects were located in good condition and were escorted out by SAR members Shuswap SAR members responded to rescue the occupants of a houseboat that was reported to be sinking in the Magna Bay area of Shuswap Lake with 14 persons on board. The occupants on board self rescued and SAR was stood down Shuswap SAR and 4 Shuswap Lifeboat 1 members responded to a BCAS request for assistance with injured boaters near Neilson Beach in Sicamous. Two females were rescued and handed over to BCAS for medical treatment. 3 3 Penticton Marine Rescue members responded for a pontoon boat in distress on Okanagan lake near Penticton. The Marine Rescue members located a piece of broken vessel and towed it to shore. LAND North Shore Rescue members responded to locate an overdue trail runner who had become separated from her group on Cypress Mountain in West Vancouver. Subject was located in fair condition and she was escorted off the mountain. 6 6 Kelowna Marine Rescue members responded to assist two kayakers in distress. SAR was stood down after a shore to shore search was conducted and nothing was located.

4 : : : : : : : : : LAND Wells Gray SAR, 8 Kamloops SAR, 4 Barriere SAR and 4 Robson Valley SAR members responded to search for a missing female in the Blue River area. The female was located at a friends house and the SAR teams were stood down. NWE LAND Archipelago SAR and 4 Kitimat SAR members along with convergent volunteers responded to search for a 25 year old missing female from Queen Charlotte City. The missing female was located by some convergent volunteers in good condition and SAR was stood down. LAND Squamish SAR member responded to assist BCAS rescue an injured mountain biker in Garibaldi Park. SAR was stood down right away. LAND Mission SAR members responded to search for two missing female hikers. SAR was stood down after the hikers walked out of the bush on their own. VIR LAND Nanaimo SAR members responded to rescue an individual with a possible broken leg in the area of Boomerang Lake near Mt Benson in Nanaimo. SAR members used ropes and a stretcher to rescue the individual and turned him over to BCAS for transport to hospital. NEA LAND North Peace SAR, 5 South Peace SAR and a PEP Air member(s) responded to search for a missing hunter in the Fort Nelson area. SAR was stood down after subject was located in good condition in a local Motel. LAND Chilliwack SAR members responded to search Mt Cheam for the source of flare sightings. Members hiked the trail and found evidence of a campfire in the location directly related to the sightings and SAR was stood down Mission SAR members responded to rescue stranded boaters on the Fraser River. The team reached the subjects just as they floated free. SEA LAND Golden SAR members responded by helicopter to rescue an individual who took a fall in Bugaboo Provincial Park and suffered a head and chest injury. She was airlifted out and transferred to BCAS at the heliport. NEA LAND Prince George SAR and 9 PEP Air members responded to search for a fisherman who was reported missing after he failed to return from fishing on the Bowron River along Hwy 16 near Prince George. The subject was located by RCMP and SAR was stood down. LAND North Shore Rescue members responded to search for a missing elderly male in the Stevens Road area of West Vancouver. Subject was located in good condition and turned over to police. VIR LAND Campbell River SAR members were contacted by police who were searching a trail area of Cortes Island for a 70 year old male that failed to return to his sailboat after going for a hike from Von Donop

5 27 14: : : : : : WEEK TOTAL YEAR TO DATE SEA Inlet to Squirrel Cove. SAR was stood down by police after the subject made radio contact advising that he was back at his dinghy and was in need of medical assistance. 4 4 Fernie SAR members responded to reports of an overturned raft on the Elk River. SAR members searched the river and were stood down when RCMP received reports from witnesses that the subjects had previously exited the river Chilliwack SAR members were called out to rescue three stranded rafters on the Chilliwack River. SAR team rescued two subjects by means of a white water raft. They located the other 3 members of the party downstream where they had safely made their way to shore. NWE LAND Fort St James SAR members responded to conduct a medical rescue for a person who was very ill at Black Lake Guide Outfitting Lodge. Due to failing light arrangements were made to fly the SAR members into the area to pick the patient up in the morning of 28 Jul. SAR received a call on morning of July 28 and the subject was doing better and it was believed she would be okay to wait a short time for a scheduled flight into the camp. SEA LAND Sparwood and 4 Elkford SAR members responded to search for two missing children near the new cemetery in Sparwood. SAR was stood down on arrival as the children had been located by police. VIR LAND Alberni Valley Rescue Squad, 6 Cowichan SAR members and 2 convergent volunteers responded to search for a missing hiker in the area of Nitinat Lake. The subject was located in good condition and escorted out of the area. LAND North Shore Rescue members responded to rescue a female hiker on the Grouse Grind. Subject was brought off the mountain and went by taxi to the hospital for treatment. VIR LAND Alberni Valley Rescue Squad members responded to search for an overdue hiker on Mt Klitsa in the Port Alberni area. Subject had got himself turned around and was walking out of the trail as the team arrived on scene ELT ELT - 9

6 WEEKLY INCIDENT REPORT Jul 2014 BODY RECOVERY On 26 Jul 14 Vernon SAR members responded to assist with a possible body recovery in the Shuswap River, Shuswap Falls area near Lumby. A vehicle was located in approximately 25 meters of water and members were unable to determine if there was a body inside. The team was stood down until RCMP Dive Team could attend on site. DANGEROUS GOODS On 21 Jul 14, five sheep were reported dead in the vicinity of a mine s ammonium nitrate silo in the Elkford area. The Ministry of Environment Response Officer (MOE RO) raised the incident to Code 2 (urgent status) until the cause was determined. An investigation into the matter concluded that approximately 8 liters of wash water had escaped a building and collected in a pool. The material was contained and the site was remediated by the mine. On 25 Jul 14, a logging truck and CN cargo train were involved in an accident at the crossing on Lewis Road in Burns Lake. The Ministry of Environment Response Officer (MOE RO) raised the incident to Code 2 (urgent status) due to the risk of the potential spill of dangerous cargo and heightened media interest. There was no dangerous cargo within the derailed intermodal cars which all contained dry consumer goods. CN retained the services of Quantum Murray Northwest and Triton Environmental services to conduct the site clean-up and remediation. FLOOD On 23 Jul 14, The City of Kamloops activated their EOC at level 1 to address overland flooding due to flash flooding in the area. On 23 Jul 14, EMBC activated the PREOC at level 1 to assist local government with flood related issues caused by heavy rain fall. MISCELLANEOUS On 23 Jul 14, The Burnaby ESS program investigated the possibility 6 to 8 residents of an apartment building would require assistance because of a broken water main. On 24 Jul 14, The Columbia Shuswap Regional District ESS provided a needs assessment for a resident impacted by a residential trailer fire in the community of Sicamous. POWER OUTAGE On 23 Jul 14, a severe thunderstorm resulted in a widespread power outage in the District of Sparwood. An evacuation of several residents was necessary due to downed power lines in a mobile home park. ESS arranged accommodations for the displaced.
