2 SEARCH AND RESCUE INFORMATION - WEEKLY PERIOD: 16 JUL 18 TO 22 JUL 18 DATE/TIME INCIDENT # : UPDATE 16 05: : : : : : : : EMBC REGION INCIDENT ELT/ #VICTIMS # EMBC VOL LOCATED ALIVE DEAD NO COMMENTS SEA LAND South Columbia SAR members responded to a BCAS request to assist a female that was having an allergic reaction at the Eeri Creek Provincial Park, near Salmo. The SAR team brought the patient out and turned her over to BCAS. VIR LAND Arrowsmith, 1 Nanaimo, 6 Comox Valley and 3 Alberni Valley Rescue members responded to locate two overdue hikers south east of Parksville. SAR was stood down when both subjects, a man and his daughter, were located alive and passed to BCAS for treatment CTL LAND 7 7 Shuswap SAR members responded to locate a vehicle that had reportedly gone over an embankment near Lee Creek. SAR was stood down when vehicle was located by the RCMP. SEA Kaslo SAR members responded to assist a boater in distress on Kootenay Lake. The subject was rescued from their sinking vessel and passed to BCAS, after they had hit the lighthouse at full speed in the dark, and suffered broken limb(s). CTL LAND Shuswap SAR members responded to assist with a missing male, last seen at Mara Lake, near Sicamous. The SAR team was stood down when the subject was located deceased in 7 feet of water by RCMP. LAND Squamish SAR members responded to search for a missing male in the area of the Squamish Valley Logging Road. The subject and 4 others were located alive and well by RCMP and SAR was stood down. VIR AIR ELT 3 3 PEP Air members responded to search for an ELT sounding near the Port Hardy Airport. PEP Air overflew the airport and local float plane bases, before they located the ELT in the Pacific Coastal hangar in Port Hardy. SEA Kaslo SAR members responded to rescue an injured house boater north east of Kaslo on Kootenay Lake. SAR brought the patient out to a waiting BCAS crew for transport to the Nelson hospital. LAND Whistler SAR members responded to rescue a male with an injured back in the Daisy Lake Road area of Whistler. The patient was rescued and turned over to BCAS Ridge Meadows SAR members responded to search for a person that fell off the lower falls at North Beach. 2 subjects were located, one was found alive and taken to the hospital, the second was deceased. LAND Squamish SAR members responded to rescue an injured hiker that fell 20 feet onto a ledge at the top of the first pitch of The Chief. The subject was retrieved via heli Class D Fixed Line (CDFL) and was passed to BCAS.

3 17 13: : : : : : : : : : CTL LAND COSAR members responded to search for a missing male in West Kelowna. The male was located deceased and was passed to the Coroner. VIR LAND Nanaimo SAR members responded to search for two lost hikers on Mount Benson. The SAR team was stood down after the subjects declined assistance, advising that they just needed directions. SAR deployed again later when the subjects called police to advise that they were still lost and would agree have SAR respond. The subjects were located and escorted out safety. CTL LAND Kamloops, Nicola Valley, Logan Lake and South Cariboo SAR members responded to locate 4 missing individuals (2 adults and 2 children) who were out walking in the Deadman's Creek area near Kamloops. The subjects were located alive and well Coquitlam SAR members responded to search for a missing swimmer at Buntzen Lake in Coquitlam. The SAR team stood down after their search efforts failed to locate the subjects and the RCMP dive team took over. LAND Central Fraser Valley SAR members responded to rescue a 10 year old girl that went 300 feet over an embankment on an ATV. The local fire rescue team walked the injured subject up the embankment, and the SAR team was stood down. LAND Kent Harrison SAR members responded to locate a lost hiker on Bear Mountain. The subject was located alive and well by SAR and was brought out safely. NEA LAND Campbell River and 8 Bella Coola Valley SAR members responded to rescue an injured hiker, 30 minutes up the Snootli Creek Trail in Bella Coola. The Campbell River SAR team flew to the scene, however a forestry helicopter in the area landed, performed the rescue and transported the injured subject to the hospital. VIR LAND Campbell River and Comox Valley SAR members responded to search for a missing hiker from the area of Sabre Road and the Mount Hkusam Trail in Sayward. The hiker walked out from the location on their own and SAR stood down Mission SAR members responded to assist RCMP who were dealing with a possible jumper off of the Mission Bridge on the Fraser River. SAR was stood down and advised that it wasn't actually the bridge but one of the marina piers, and the subject had called and was back at the residence with RCMP. LAND Squamish SAR members responded to the In and Out Burger Mountain Bike Trail to rescue an injured cyclist. SAR was stood down when Fire Rescue responded and brought the subject out to safety. LAND Central Fraser Valley SAR members responded to rescue an injured 14 year old hiker on the Abby Grind Trail, in Abbotsford. The subject was rescued and transferred to BCAS.

4 17 19: Kent Harrison and 23 Chilliwack SAR members responded following a report of a possible body floating in the Fraser River, near the Agassiz Bridge. SAR was stood down by the RCMP after an extensive search failed to locate any sign of a body. 1817:24 17: : : : : : : : : : : VIR LAND Powell River SAR members responded to locate two hikers who were lost and without cell reception on the Sunshine Coast Trail. SAR was stood down when the subjects called in alive and well from a local store, where the RCMP were headed to meet them Hope and 10 Chilliwack SAR members responded to search for a person in the Fraser River, near Yale. The subject was located alive by the RCMP and was passed to BCAS. LAND Squamish SAR members responded to rescue a 23 year old hiker who fell 10 feet and suffered a back and pelvic injury, 100 metres up the trail from the Elephant Lake Shelter. The patient was rescued via helicopter and was transferred to BCAS. CTL LAND Oliver-Osoyoos SAR members responded to search for a missing male in the Mt. Baldy area outside of Oliver. SAR was stood down when ski patrol located the subject alive and well and walked them out to the RCMP CTL Vernon SAR members responded following reports of an overdue kayaker on Mabel Lake. RCMP stood down the search when no sign of the subject was found. CTL LAND Wells Gray SAR member was called to assist with a 15 year old girl, suffering an allergic reaction, in Wells Gray Provincial Park. SAR was not required to respond, as the patient was brought out by Parks staff and transferred to BCAS. VIR LAND PEMO SAR members responded to search for a missing 12 year old in the Central Saanich area. SAR was stood down while mustering when the subject was located by police. LAND CFV, 6 Mission, and 10 Chilliwack SAR members responded to assist a hiker who collapsed on the Abbotsford Grind. SAR stood down when the Fire Dept managed to bring the patient out to BCAS. SEA New Denver Fire Rescue members responded to Arrow Lakes following a report of a boat floating adrift with possible people onboard. The boat was recovered, and 4 occupants were brought safely ashore. VIR LAND Powell River SAR members responded to search for a missing despondent male in the Willingdon Park Campsite Trail area of Powell River. The subject was retrieved by RCMP and transferred to the hospital. SEA Cranbrook and 5 Kimberley SAR members responded to rescue a female who was swept down the Goat River when attempting to save a dog. The SAR team was stood down while en route, when the subject returned in good condition and refused transport to the hospital.

5 19 18: : : : UPDATE 20 10: : : : : : : : CTL Penticton Fire Rescue members responded to rescue a female trapped between two objects on Okanagan Lake, near Penticton. SAR was stood down while en route, after a local business operator in the area, rescued the subject. LAND North Shore Rescue members responded to search for a missing Alzheimer's patient near Bridgeman Park in North Vancouver. SAR was stood down when the subject was located by the RCMP. VIR LAND Nanaimo SAR members responded to search for a missing 13 year old with visual and cognitive impairments. The child was located in good condition near his residence. VIR OCEAN 7 7 Westcoast Inland SAR members responded to continue the search for 2 of the subjects still missing after their boat capsized in Duffin Cove, Tofino, when a wallet and clothing belonging to one of the subjects was found on shore. An extensive shoreline search of Wickaninnish Island failed to find any additional evidence of the missing subjects and SAR was stood down. LAND 4 4 Whistler SAR members responded to rescue an injured mountain biker near the top of Function Junction. SAR was stood down by the Fire Department and BCAS. SEA LAND Golden SAR members responded to rescue an injured hiker at the base of Mount Helen. The subject was rescued by helicopter in good condition and transferred to BCAS. SEA New Denver Fire Dept. members responded to rescue an overturned kayaker. The subject was brought safely to shore in good condition. SEA LAND Golden SAR members responded following a spot beacon activation from two hikers in the Blaeberry area. One subject suffered an allergic reaction to a wasp sting. The patient and hiking partner were rescued and passed to a BCAS crew for transport to hospital. LAND Chilliwack and 4 Kent Harrison SAR members responded to a dropped 911 call from Garnet Creek FSR. The SAR teams were stood down by the RCMP when the subject was seen on Laidlaw Road. LAND Squamish SAR members responded following a SPOT beacon activation west of Brackendale Park outside of Squamish. The subject was successfully extracted via heli and transferred to BCAS. LAND Surrey SAR members responded to rescue an injured person on the 1001 Steps near Burlington Northern Railway. The patient was rescued and handed off to BCAS with a fractured ankle. NEA LAND Quesnel SAR members responded to rescue an injured quad rider on the West Fraser Road near Quesnel. The SAR team was stood down, when the subject was assisted by convergent volunteers. LAND North Shore Rescue members responded to assist a female hiker with a head injury on Mount Seymour. The patient was passed off to a BCAS

VIR Cowichan Valley SAR member responded to search for a missing swimmer with Alzheimer's, last seen on the Cowichan River, near Cowichan Lake. SAR was stood down when the subject was located by RCMP. LAND Kent Harrison SAR members responded to rescue an injured rope swinger from the Weaver Lake Forest Recreational Site. SAR was stood down after BCAS was able to reach the patient. SEA LAND Golden SAR members responded to rescue an injured rope swinger at Cedar Lake Campground, near Golden. The patient was retrieved by the SAR team and transferred to BCAS in stable condition ELT ELT - 15

7 SEARCH AND RESCUE INFORMATION - WEEKLY PERIOD: 16 JUL 18 TO 22 JUL 18 DATE/TIME INCIDENT # 11 13: UPDATE 22 00: : : : : : : : EMBC REGION INCIDENT ELT/ #VICTIMS # EMBC VOL LOCATED ALIVE DEAD NO COMMENTS VIR LAND 15 On the 22 July, 15 Cowichan Valley SAR members responded to an RCMP request to continue searching for the missing elderly female after her vehicle was located in North Cowichan. SAR conducted a search in the area of the vehicle but were unable to locate any sign of the subject. SAR planned to head out the following day with search dogs The search is ONGOING. CTL LAND Wells Gray SAR members responded to search for 3 missing female climbers somewhere on the Western Summit of Trophy Mountain. SAR located the subjects and flew them out using the RCMP Air 4 helicopter. SEA LAND Sparwood SAR members responded to rescue an injured 62 year old mountain biker who fell and dislocated his shoulder. BCAS was able to access the patient, and SAR was stood down. NWE LAND Burns Lake SAR members responded to rescue a 16 year old mountain biker who was injured in a race on Charlotte's Web Trail, Boer Mountain Road. BCAS was able to retrieve the patient and SAR was stood down Hope SAR members responded to search for a homeless female in Hope, who had been missing for 10 days. RCMP closed the search after SAR members searched along Water Road and up and down the Fraser River with out finding any trace of the female. LAND Chilliwack SAR members responded to assist a female hiker having chest pains on the Zoa Peak Trail, near the Coquihalla Summit. The SAR team used HETS to airlift the patient out and transferred her to BCAS LAND Coquitlam SAR members responded to assist a female having an allergic reaction to several wasp or hornet stings on the Diaz Vistas Trail near Buntzen Lake. The patient was brought out via HETS and was passed to BCAS. LAND 7 7 Squamish SAR members responded following a spot beacon activation in the Elaho Valley, Squamish. SAR made contact with subjects and determined the activation had been an error. CTL 9 9 Peachland Marine Rescue members responded following reports of a pontoon boat on fire, on Okanagan Lake, near Peachland. The vessels occupants were rescued by another vessel, and the Marine Rescue crew brought the burned out boat to shore : VIR LAND Nanaimo SAR members responded to rescue a motorcycle driver that had gone over a cliff on Pacific Marine Drive, near Mesachie Lake. BCAS confirmed the motorcyclist was deceased, and the individual was retrieved by the SAR team :11 LAND Central Fraser Valley SAR members responded

8 to rescue a female with an injured ankle on Sumas Mountain. The patient was transported to Abbotsford Hospital via air : : : LAND Coquitlam SAR members responded to rescue a hiker suffering from an allergic reaction in the Buntzen Lake area. The SAR team performed a HETS rescue and passed the patient to BCAS for assessment. LAND Ridge Meadows SAR members responded to assist a hiker thought to be suffering an overdose, at View Point Beach. The subject was taken into custody by the RCMP and SAR was stood down. VIR LAND A total of 30 SAR members from Nanaimo, Arrowsmith, Ladysmith and Comox responded to search for an elderly male with dementia and Parkinson's who went missing on Gabriola Island. The missing subject was located alive and was transferred to BCAS. CTL Wells Grey SAR members responded following a request for assistance from police who received a report of 2 kayakers that were following a body as it floated downstream of the old North Thompson Highway Bridge. The RCMP recovered the body and stood the SAR team down. A second subject was found alive and was picked up by RCMP. LAND Squamish SAR members responded to assist an injured hiker on the Top Shelf Trail, Squamish. The patient was extracted and transferred to BCAS : : : : : WEEK TOTAL LAND Hope SAR members responded to rescue an unconscious female, on the Jones Lake Access Road, Laidlaw. The team transported a BCAS paramedic with them, and were stood down after an air ambulance was able to land and pick up the patient for transport. LAND Ridge Meadows SAR members responded to rescue an individual who suffered injury by jumping into the water where there were rocks, in Golden Ears Park. The subject was brought out by SAR and pass to BCAS. SEA LAND Kaslo Fire, New Denver Fire and Arrow Lakes SAR members responded to rescue a woman having an allergic reaction south of New Denver. The patient was transported to the hospital. LAND Central Fraser Valley SAR members responded to search for missing hikers on Sumas Mountain. SAR successfully located the subjects and escorted them safely from the area. LAND Hope SAR members responded to rescue a woman suffering seizures near Joan Lake. The team was successful in bringing the subject out to BCAS. LAND Central Fraser Valley SAR members responded to search for a missing family of 5 on Sumas Mountain. The search was called off when it was discovered the family was on Sumas Mountain in Washington State ELT - 0

10 WEEKLY INCIDENT REPORT July BODY RECOVERY On 18 July, Central Okanagan SAR responded to Lambly Lake in West Kelowna to recover a body discovered 40 meters offshore. On 22 July, Terrace SAR responded to the Skeena River North of Schremp Island to recover a body. On 22 July, Vernon SAR responded to a request from the RCMP to conduct a body recovery near Goose Lake. DANGEROUS GOODS On 18 July, a tanker truck crashed and rolled 50 metres down an embankment along Highway 3, just south of Morrissey Road. A tank loaded with Calcium Chloride cracked open and spilled along with diesel from the truck s saddle tanks, to the embankment and possibly into the Elk River. The incident was raised to Code 2 (urgent status) by the Ministry of Environment Response Officer (MOE RO) who attended the site. The product was determined to have no detrimental effects to aquatic life and there were no concerns for health impacts to the water course. The incident was downgraded to Code 1. On 18 July, a barge sunk near Strachan Point in Howe Sound, West Vancouver. The barge contained up to 1,000 litres of gasoline, hydraulic fluid and oil. The incident was raised to Code 2 (urgent status) by the MOE RO due to concerns that product could possibly come up from the barge and reach the shore. The barge was raised with minimal release of pollutants, then it was towed to safe moorage at Snug Cove where remaining mixed oil and fuel were removed. FLOODING On 20 July, a task number was issued to Chetwynd to activate the local EOC following a severe rain event expected to cause flooding of several sites with the next several hours/days. On 20 July, a task number was issued to the NEA PREOC for support to local authorities affected by localized flooding from a severe rain event that hit the region. INTERFACE FIRE (S): On 17 July, the Penticton Indian Band activated their EOC to monitor an interface fire in the Northwest corner of the band s lands. On 18 July, the Bulkley Nechako Regional District (BNRD) issued an evacuation alert after an interface fire (G41250) threatened 51 homes in electoral areas D and F, north of Fort Fraser on Dog Creek Trail Forest Service Road (FSR)

11 On 18 July, Okanagan-Similkameen Regional District (OSRD) responded to an interface fire (K51243) and potentially other fires in the vicinity of Summerland, Similkameen, Naramata and Kaleden. On 18 July, Summerland activated their EOC to monitor interface fires (K51243, K51246), occurring in Summerland District. A Sprinkler Protection Unit (SPU) was installed at a threatened residence as well. On 18 July, Central Okanagan Regional District (CORD) activated their EOC to monitor an interface fire (K51242) in Kelowna near Good Creek. On 18 July, Central Okanagan Regional District (CORD) activated their EOC to monitor an interface fire (K51264) in Peachland. On 18 July, the Okanagan-Similkameen Regional District (OSRD) activated their EOC to monitor an interface fire near Greata Ranch. On 19 July, the East Kootenay Regional District (EKRD) requested a task number after an interface fire (N11332) on Pattinson Road in the Cranbrook/Wycliffe area threatened structures and homes. On 20 July, Central Okanagan Regional District (CORD) requested a task to cover delivery of evacuation orders due to an interface fire in the Law Creek area of West Kelowna. On July 20, Golden requested a task number to cover delivery of evacuation alerts for an interface fire (N21350) in the vicinity of Parsons unincorporated. On 20 July, Okanagan-Similkameen Regional District (OSRD) activated their EOC for an evacuation due to an interface fire (K51344) near Paradise Ranch. On July 20, Okanagan-Similkameen Regional District (OSRD) requested another task number for an interface fire (K51256) on Glenfir Road. MISCELLANEOUS On 16 July, North Vancouver requested a task number to have volunteers set up a warming/reception centre for the residents of 4-6 homes who experienced flooding as a result of a water main break.
