1 CdAAA DINNER, USO SHOW & PANCAKE BREAKFAST and FLY-IN A SUCCESS! The CdAAA organizers were very pleased with the enthusiastic turnout for the Dinner and USO Show on Friday evening, Aug. 17 and the Pancake Breakfast and Fly-In on Saturday, Aug.18. Activities started on Monday, Aug. 13 with the arrival of the CAF B-17 and B-25 War Birds. They operated throughout the week from Resort Aviation, giving rides and tours. Also giving rides was Mike Carpentiero in his 1930 New Standard D25 biplane, Stanley. On Friday evening at 5:00 there was a dinner for 200+ folks catered by Ekness and a beer garden served by Wallace Brewery in Resort Aviation's #23 hanger with the B-17 and B-25 in the background Officers/Directors President, Murdo Cameron, (208) Vice president, Allen Peterson, (208) , Newsletter Ed. 2 Tables and chairs for the dinner and show were provided by Duane Brown, AARP Taxaide, and Richard Le Francis from his Preservatorium. The menu was pulled pork and jerked chicken sandwiches, baked beans, potato salad, pasta salad, and condiments. Bottled water was provided with the dinner. At 6:45 the Marine Corps League Pappy Boyington Detachment #966 presented colors to kick off the USO show directed by Jerry and Sue Spreen in Resort Aviation's #22 hanger. Music was coordinated by Alan Golub. There was a dance after the show with a DJ from Ruby Frog Entertainment. Paul Lillengreen closed the show with his presentation of I Am The Nation while the cast members hummed America. Page 2
3 A tireless group of members and volunteers set up the tables and chairs for the dinner and show and then moved them from Resort Aviation's hangers to John Hubof's hanger on the opposite side of At 6:30 on Saturday morning a pancake the airport after breakfast catered by Ekness was served to the dance on 400+ folks in Hubof's hanger. Friday night. Fly-In On Saturday the B-17 and B-25 were on display on the southwest apron along with a C-130J from the California ANG and a F4U Corsair. Also on display were Bert Rutan's Catbird, Addison Pemberton's newly restored Waco EQC-6 and his Boing 40. In all aboout 125 planes, some flying in on Friday, were on display. Jim Van Sky gave helicopter rides throught the day The B-17, B-25 and the New Standard biplane gave rides in the afternoon. Page 3
4 Air Race Brent Travis organized the Sport Air Racing League's air race. 15 planes started taking off at 10:30 to fly the course, most of which was beyond the airport area. But the take offs and landings were exciting to watch. Tim Soper in his Duncan Sport (upper right) finished first in the Biplane Red class with a blazing kts. and won a trophy. Rod and Joan Genter and their ramp crew provided ground ops for the planes with help.from the Young Marines. Community Participation The Life Flight Network helicopter from Sandpoint was on display, along with a SNJ and a AN-2. Several car clubs had cars on display, the PC Cruisers, the Porsche Club and the Mustang Club, as well as many cars form individuals. Continued on page 5 Page 4
5 Community Participation, cont. We had bicycles and motorcycles, and classic trucks from the ATHS on display. Food was provided by the CdA Elks, the Longhorn BBQ and Schwans. Richard Rains and friends brought a variety of amazing working scale model engines. Rex Grace, Ken Olson and friends displayed several RC model airplanes and boats. Several craft vendors had their wares on display. The Fairgrounds provided their People Mover and Coeur d'alene Tractor donated the tractor to pull it. The Airport Staff provided bus tours of the airport and much needed help and suppor for our event. Waste Management donated a dumpster and 35 trash carts. EconoJohn provided 10 Porta-Potties and donated one unit. Dean Haagerson donated 2 units. Empire Airlines made donations to the Sport Air Racing League and the C-130 flight crew lodgings. The CdA Resort provided bus transportation to and from the airport and downtown Coeur d'alene. Office Depot gave a 50% discount on printing costs. Page 5
6 Credits Part of the CdAAA Mission Statement is to Preserve the airport and improve community relations and communications with the airport. Many people worked together to make the Show and Fly-In a successful community event. Murdo Cameron had the vision to make it a community event,not just a fly-in Holly Forshee had the idea for the USO show and worked with Jerry and Sue Spreen to make it happen. She also organized the beer garden. Dennis Beissel found Ekness Catering and arranged for the dinner and breakfast. Joan Lewis organized the cashiers for the dinner and breakfast with help form the Blue Star Mothers, the Marine Corps League Auxilliary and Joni Logue. Tom Lewis provided audio for the media, parking control, and was the Emcee for the show. Rod and Joan Genter organized the ground ops crew. John Bateman arranged for the insurance for the event and provided video for the media. Evi Olsen organized the craft and food vendors. Willie Stevenson worked with the motorcycle clubs. George Minas of the Marine Corps League organized the marshals and the color guard. Mike Kostur and Mac McCormack provided roving security and parking control. Gene Soper organized the truckers and provided his trailer for the show stage. Lee Steffens, Lloyd Rose and George Wells drove the tractor for the People Mover. Dave Rauscher made signs, obtained a You Tube video, organized the table and chair moving crew, and picked up the trash carts. Charlie Branch organized the book signers, and along with Holly Forshee, Bob Bolam and Vern Newby submitted pictures of the event. Thanks and a job well done to all concerned!
