1 Coeur dʼalene Airport Association Newsletter May 29, 2011 Flying season just around the corner By MIKE SATREN The Cd AAA annual meeting was a culinary/musical delight that saw the addition of Allen Peterson and Joni Lueck as new members of the board. During the June board meeting Holly Forshee was additionally voted onto the board. The Cd AAA Board meetings are open to all and if you have an interest in serving on the board, come to a meeting and speak to a board member. Summer flying season events kick off with the EAA Chapter 79 Felts Field Days in Spokane on June 1 through June 5. National Experimental Aircraft Association President Rod Hightower will speak Friday evening, June 3. See page 2 for more information. Aviation and innovation legend Dr. Forrest Bird celebrates his 90th birthday this year with a fantastic gathering of eagles and originators from around the world on Saturday, July 9. Your Cd AAA will be helping at the event so come volunteer if you can but don t miss this rare opportunity to mix with and meet some real pioneers. See page 3 for more information about Dr. Bird s 90th birthday blowout. Immediately after the Bird Aviation Museum event, the Northwest Biplane Flyin at Felts Field in Spokane will kick off on Friday through Sunday, July This is a truly old-style fly-in with competitions, informal hangar flying plus a Saturday night spaghetti dinner and a presentation by Mike Lavelle from the Seattle Museum of Flight on the 1911 transcontinental flight of the Vin Fiz flyer. See page 5 for details and contact information. Your own Cd AAA will put on a pancake breakfast on Saturday, August 20 from 7 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. followed by a parade of airplanes staging at the Intersection of I-90 and Northwest Blvd. proceeding to the mouth of the Spokane River and off the north shoreline of Coeur d Alene Lake past Independence Point and around Tubbs Hill. This parade of airplanes will be announced by Gene Soper from the announcing stand at the Hydros, Hot Rods and Harleys event downtown in conjunction with the Wooden Boat Show. Attendance at the fly-by briefing is mandatory to participate. Empire Airlines/Empire Aerospace will sponsor transportation to the downtown festivities and back to the west ramp of the Coeur d Alene Airport/Pappy Boyington Field during the day on Saturday. See page 4 for the event poster. Finally, after a long, wet spring, flying season seems just around the corner.
