No, I did not attend SkyFest since I looked at the clear sky that morning and knew it would be hot on those paved expanses designed for the B-36. I saw the Thunderbirds in 1972, Gunfighter Skies '03, and Elmendorf '08. Visiting with the crew of a RAAF C-130 at Fairchild AFB in 1990, as they were returning home from a trip to Europe was a highlight of that show. I wonder if there s a chance the USAF would form a demonstration team with the T-6A Texan II? That would provide some crosscountry experience and instructors showing the skills developed. 4 Life Flight Network to Open Air Medical Base in Coeur d'alene, Idaho, Beginning May 23, 2014 Local EMS and area healthcare professionals support decision to establish an air medical base in Coeur d Alene. May 16, 2014 Aurora, Oregon Life Flight Network (LFN) announced plans today to base an air medical helicopter at Pappy Boyington Field in Coeur d Alene., Idaho beginning May 23rd, Dominic Pomponio, Regional Director, states, We are excited to expand our service in Coeur d Alene and the surrounding communities. The new base is receiving tremendous support from local care providers. Having this resource so closely based to regional hospitals and EMS agencies will undoubtedly save lives. LFN, the largest non-profit flight program in the United States, provides critical care transportation for seriously ill or injured patients throughout the Pacific Northwest and Intermountain West. The Coeur d Alene. base will be home to one of the company s new AgustaWestland Koala helicopters. LFN also is strongly considering placing a fixed-wing aircraft in Coeur d Alene later this year. LFN s aircraft offer the ability to transport a critical care team, along with comprehensive life saving medications and state of the art medical equipment. LFN s air ambulance will be the only resource bringing blood to critically injured patients before they even reach a hospital. The new Coeur d Alene base is supported by a number of area EMS and healthcare professionals, including Christopher Way, Chief of the Kootenai County EMS System. He states, Kootenai County EMS System is pleased to welcome Life Flight Network to Kootenai County, adding a new element to our already outstanding Emergency Medical Services system. The placement of an aircraft at the Coeur d Alene airport will allow patients with critical illness and injury to reach a high level of hospital care from the surrounding areas more quickly. KCEMSS and its partner agencies look forward to working with Life Flight and their outstanding patient care and management team as we build this new relationship. The company plans to hire 14 employees, including Flight Nurses, Flight Paramedics, Pilots and Mechanics. The payroll and benefits for these highly-skilled personnel will exceed $1,000,000 per year, providing a direct economic benefit for the community. Mike Griffiths, CEO, states, Our new base in Coeur d Alene compliments the goal of the recently approved Idaho Legislature plan to develop a statewide Time Sensitive Emergency system of care. The goal of this legislation, getting patients to the right place in the right time with the right care, will helped to be served by the addition of this new community resource. Life Flight Network and local area health care professionals know many lives will be positively impacted by having a local air medical helicopter. LFN has provided award winning high quality critical care air medical service for more than 36 years. Earlier this year, LFN was awarded the, Excellence in Community Service Award from the Association of Air Medical Services. LFN has also received the prestigious Program of the Year award, the first program on the West Coast to ever receive the award. LFN is owned by a consortium of four world-class health systems, including Legacy Emanuel Medical Center, Saint Alphonsus Regional Medical Center, Oregon Health & Science University and Providence Health System-Oregon. About Life Flight Network: Life Flight Network, a not-for-profit air medical service, is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Medical Transport Systems (CAMTS). Life Flight Network has administrative offices in Aurora, Oregon and is owned by a consortium of Legacy Emanuel Medical Center, Oregon Health & Science University, Saint Alphonsus Regional Medical Center and Providence Health System-Oregon. Rotor-wing services are provided by TriState CareFlight. Fixed-wing services are provided by AvCenter and Conyan Aviation. 5 May 30, The CDA guys were finally able to get through the snow to Magee (S77) and we can now schedule a work party for June 21. There is plenty of tasks that need to be done, so the more, the merrier! It would be good if you can bring your own loppers, rakes and shovels as there are many bushes that need cutting back, gopher holes to fill and raking of various areas just to get the winter debris cleaned up. Firewood needs to be gathered and cut also. The strip will need mowing by then and we are trying to coordinate getting a roller up there to roll and smooth the strip. The North Idaho Chapter will provide burgers, hot dogs and some soft drinks for lunch on Saturday so bring munchies, a side dish or dessert to share. The Zaccanti's will be showing up on Friday night with their motor home so they will have coffee ready early. Plan is to start work around 9:00 giving people time to get there. The best way to get there is to fly in and I am told the next best way is to go to Enaville off I-90 and come up the CDA river, leaving only 8 miles of dirt road from the end of the pavement to the strip (This is about a 2 hour drive from CDA). You can also get there from Clark Fork or from Bunco Road off US 95 by Silverwood. It would be great to get a bunch of people to come and camp either or both nights and then we can all go to Hackney for pancakes on Sunday morning! Please RSVP me so we can get an idea of who is coming to gauge the food buy. The other notice is to also put August 23 on your calendar for the Cavanaugh Bay Fly In. This Chapter is also sponsoring this fly in and again, it would be great to see a bunch of you make it to this event! Hope to see you all in 3 weeks! 9 June Collings Foundation's Wings of Freedom Tour B-17G, B-24J, P-51C July 7-9 Commemorative Air Force Fifi, the B-29 Superfortress and a C-45 Expediter. Stay tuned for more summer bird watching... The CAF B-29 FIFI is touring the West Coast this summer. The news feeds have been buzzing and the s are pouring in. People in the West Coast are thrilled FIFI is coming to town. There are too many stories to get them all in one article, but some of the highlights include lots of stories of veterans visiting the "old bird" and several sons surprising their fathers with flights on the B-29. With Father's Day swiftly approaching, a ride on a war-bird, is perhaps one of the most memorable gifts you can give. "One of the highlights for me of the B-29 Cockpit Tours was a visit by 90-year-old 'Bill', who entertained us with stories of his days of flying as radio operator on B-29s during World War II. Our other guests were thrilled, too. To me, this is what this tour with FIFI is all about." said Dale Harmer of the Santa Monica, California stop. Harmer has been journaling his "life on tour" and sending in regular s and photos of the highlights of each stop. "For me, sitting at my computer each day, highlights include the phone call, or Facebook post from someone who's seen the airplane expressing their gratitude and joy. But it is equally as satisfying to hear from the CAF Colonels on tour. I've been there, so I know that these members are working long, hot hours on the ramp. They are getting an endless stream of the same questions. But the s from the tour never have a complaint. Our members are some of the most dedicated, positive, hard working people around. I think their commitment is contagious and keeps us office workers going." said Leah Block, Creative Director of the Commemorative Air Force. All of the stops so far have been amazing and the crew cannot wait to continue on. From the CAF web site Horsing Around Karl Albert Byron Amundson, mostly called KABA, was Commander of the Swedish Army Air Force, later Swedish Air Force, from 1915 to Judging from photos he was a rather stiff and haughty person, but photo-judging is a doubtful business. As a young officer he had nothing against playing a good prank, such as this one: He and a fellow officer were driving their car on a narrow country road when they found their way blocked by a horse-cart. The horse was grazing peacefully on the roadside. On the driver's seat sat a peasant, dead drunk and fast asleep. They honked their horn, but nothing happened. The horse just lifted his head for a moment, then went on grazing. There seemed to be nothing left but remove the subject by force. They unbuckled the horse and led it to an opening in the fence which separated the road from the pasture on the other side. Not satisfied with that, they put the shafts of the cart through the fence and re-buckled the horse on the other side. Then they quietly turned the car around and left the scene. 10 Air Coeur LLC is expanding!! We are a local flying club based at KCOE that wants to do more. We have 5 Partner members, and are looking for #6. We have a beautiful Mooney M20C for our members, and just added a Cessna 150 for affordable flight training and putting about. That's right, a flying club - in Coeur d' Alene - with two airplanes, and we want more pilots to come join the fun! About the Club: Air Coeur was started in August last year to buy a Mooney as a complex trainer and fast, efficient XC machine for the founding members. This Spring we added two more local pilots looking for the sweet Mooney experience, some friendships, and reduced-cost flying. The president of the club is a CFI prospect who plans to have his CFI in July, which would put a CFI in the club for new member checkouts, complex endorsements, and BFRs - a nice perk to a flying club. Of course, we already have a great Associate Member instructor with time in this aircraft that can check you out if you want to get started sooner than that! Then, along came a 150. One of the Club's passions is getting more pilots flying and hanging out, and one way to do that is expand the club's offering of airplanes. We located a local 150 that is a solid buy, so the club has purchased that for use as a primary trainer, sightseer, and low-cost time builder for members. Both Partner and Associate Members have access to both airplanes, for around $130/mo. If you want to do a lot of flying, are tired of the local rental situation (lack of!), and want access to two airplanes, Air Coeur is the place for you. We want pilots with an attitude of continuous improvement, who take flying seriously but love to laugh with others, and want to fly. About the Mooney: Beautiful M20C! IFR Certified and equipped with Garmin 430 WAAS GPS. Travel in style at 140 KTS and 10 GPH, at $85.00/hr wet, for a Partner Member. Analog panel with Garmin Loc/GS indicator, PS Engineering audio panel (your music at 7500 ft) and PS Com (new 4 yrs ago), as well as Garmin 430W Nav/Com. Mooney Wing Leveler (PC system). Club O2 system. Very nice paint and interior, and well maintained. 999 lbs. useful load, 52 gal fuel = 687 lbs payload w/full tanks! $12500 is an equity share for a Partner Member. Price is firm. Currently in shared, heated, very nice private hangar space at COE. About the 150: Well, it's a 150. Mid-time engine, IFR panel (not certified currently), single COM and VOR/ILS/DME. New seats w/4-point harnesses, new mags/wires/plugs, average paint. Simple and fun to fly. Fly this airplane for $50/hr as a Partner Member, wet - best deal in town, by a long shot. We have one Partner Membership, and several Associate Memberships available. If you're interested, or have questions, please contact Reg Bach, (406) , or me at bachreg@gmail.com. 11 Top Left: Bob's Beaver and refinished sign at COE Top Right: Short Final... Floats? Bottom Left: Beaver and Kitfox at Magee Bottom Right: L-R Bob Williams, Don McIntosh, Sam Bendickson Update on Magee (S-77) May 14, 2014 On May 14, Bob Williams and I loaded the refinished Magee airport sign into Bob's DHC-2 Beaver and did a multi-purpose flight into Magee airstrip. We needed to assess the water overflow problem at the north end, as well as put the sign back up. We brought the sign out with us last fall in the back of Dan Zaccanti's pickup after putting S-77 to bed for the winter. The sign was in pretty sad shape after several years of facing into the morning sun. Since it was too large for my Maule, what better excuse to go fly the Beaver? We had communicated with IAA Region 1 leader, Don McIntosh, who went over to Priest River with his Kitfox, picked up IAA member Sam Bendickson, and met us at Magee. The sign went up post-haste, but assessing the water problem took a little longer. Magee certainly does have a water problem in the spring! We lose about 400 feet of the north end due to Trail Creek breaching the dike and channeling across toward Teepee Creek. We wil figure out something. Anyway, it sure was a nice day. Just hard to beat flying in Idaho. Blue skies and tailwinds. Gene, N51407 Coeur d'alene Airport Association Page 11 June 2014
