There are good signs that the training and flying season will get off to an early start this year. We had a few great flight reports from club members around the region. I had a great, albeit brief and cold flight in a new Six Chuter powered parachute at Lendhardt airfield two weeks ago. And Rick Gutierrez and I completed Rick's CFI renewal flight at Arlington just last week. The weather has indeed been moderate and if you don't mind dressing up a bit to stay warm, the cold, dry winter air can be some of our best flights. Our instructor network still has challenges in keeping up with demand. We continue to mourn the loss of Rob Lyons who was our primary CFI in Weight Shift. Clyde Poser is our other weight shift CFI and examiner but has all the students that he can handle at this point. Mark Martin is considering stepping into weight shift category to help carry the load and we are encouraging him to do this. We are still working on making sure we have sufficient "SLSA" trainers staged around the region so that students don't necessarily have to own their own aircraft before training. This is a costly objective, but we should have SLSA's in powered parachute and weight shift category available by the training season. As we move into we will continue to be challenged to respond to the very long list of current and prospective students. If you are patient and connect with us early for scheduling 1

So we want to edit that list to determine who remains genuinely interested in light sport training. You can me at to verify that you would like to stay on our training list. Better yet, we encourage all current and prospective students to take a minute to fill out our training needs form. This will allow us to update our contact list, reaffirm your status and gain current information on your preferences for location, instructors etc. TRAINING NEEDS FORM Because our few instructors will be busy early with students enrolled in solo or sport pilot training it can be particularly frustrating to those who are simply waiting in line for a discovery flight. One of the best ways to get a first flight done, and at the same time meet many of the instructors and pilots is to attend an event organized by EAA UL Chapter 127. This chapter is the largest regional light sport chapter in the U.S. with over 130 members. The club organizes several rallies each year where numerous pilots and instructors are on site. These events are open to the public. There are upcoming rallies in Chelan Washington, Brownsville Oregon and in early September back at Quincy, Washington. Be sure and read more details in this bulletin about the chapter and attending one of their events. Rick Gutierrez and Mark Martin operating out of Arlington, Washington have quite a list of students and are our busiest ppc instructors in the region. Rick manages Seattle Powered Parachutes at the Arlington Airport with hangars, a great field and a classroom. If you are considering accelerated training right now, this would be the place to go. The latest target date is March 1 and Doug and Perry are scheduling discovery flights and ongoing training beginning in March.. Doug is also on the road much of the time as a sport pilot examiner and instructor examiner so scheduling commitments early in the season is important. Here is a note from him regarding his training status. Wolf Emonds checking in. I had a fantastic flight training year last year with many happy students. I trained several for part 103 ultralight operations and all four sport pilot students passed their sport pilot airplane check rides and received their sport pilot certificates. I have moved my flight training operation to Illinois Valley (3S4 identifier) and have built a flight lodge to house my students as well as any transient pilots. I invite any other CFI's to use Captain Drake's flight lodge as a x-country destination. We are required to do x-country flight training anyways so why not make it memorable for our students? Fly here, stay the night, swim in the pool, enjoy the views. Best part, there is no charge! That's right Captain drake's flight lodge is run on a donation basis. Pay what you like or not at all. 4

The airplane is equipped with rudder pedals so the student will not have any restriction on his or her certificate. 7 EAA UL Chapter 127 EAA UL Chapter 127 is a Western U.S. regionally organized light sport aviation chapter of the EAA. We have members in Oregon, Washington, California, Idaho, Montana and a variety of other locations. This chapter has grown to 125 members. The chapter offers first year memberships for only $35 and the ongoing annual due is $25. Chapter membership offers: Free registration at all chapter fly in rallies during the year Access to the group forum that allows you to connect with other light sport and prospective light sport pilots throughout the region Discounts on various products and services Liability insurance when participating in club rallies (requires EAA membership in addition to chapter membership) Membership in the chapter requires an application and approval. Club Calendar The EAA UL Chapter 127 calendar is still a work in progress. One major change, however, is considering moving the opening season Memorial Day fly in. The club has a practice of moving the event location about every three years to provide variety to club members and to help connect with other communities. We have been guests of Kent and Kim Bacon at Twin Firs Turf Farm in Quincy, Washington now for the past four years. If we move the Memorial Day event then we will consider spotlighting participation in their hot air balloon event in September. Target #1 for this year's Memorial Day fly in is Deer Park Airport, north of Spokane, Washington: The club has not had an event in Eastern Washington for several years so this seems a natural for us. As plans develop we will keep club members informed via the forum, and also post information on the WSPA website 8

9 Pre-Season Checklist Reminders This is a simple checklist to help you think ahead about preparing for the flight season. 1. EAA Chapter 1.1. Annual membership fee paid 1.2. Membership to EAA current Not mandatory, but only EAA members are covered by the EAA event insurance while attending chapter events 2. Pilot Currency 2.1. Part 103 Legal Pilots Have no currency requirement 2.2. Student Pilots Must have instructor endorsement that is current and valid (each 90 days and no limitations that prevent flying at event and event location) 2.3. Sport Pilots Current Flight Review Every 24 Calendar Months 2.4. Recent Experience: 3 Three Full Stop Takeoffs and Landings to Full Stop within 90 day period to carry passengers 3. Aircraft 3.1. Part 103 Aircraft Must Be Legal (No more than 5 gallon fuel capacity and maximum dry weight of 254 lbs.) 3.2. Light Sport Aircraft All Documentation Current Airworthiness Certificate Registration Operating Limitations Weight and Balance 3.3. Current Annual Inspection of Condition 4. Proficiency 4.1.
