March 2018 EAA Chapter 406 Operating the Bremerton Aviation Center for Education (BACE) the Bird Sheet This month's article The 5 year plan for EAA 406 This month's article and BACE EAA 406 VP Jeremy Wilson up for a flight above Port Orchard on a sunny late winter day
EAA 406! Website: President: Mike Friend telephone: Vice President: Jeremy Wilson! Treasurer: Joel Mapes! Secretary: Terry Donison! Newsletter editor: Mike Friend! Young Eagles coordinator: Susan Shaw! Monthly meeting: Wednesday, March 28 th. Food will be served at 6:30, meeting starts at 7:00. This month's program Ron Wanttaja will talk about the history of the Fly Baby, winner of the EAA design Contest in the 1960s. We will meet for the first time in our new BACE building, the former firehouse just across the parking lot from the Airport Diner at Bremerton National Airport.
All the news! Saturday, April 28 we will have a grand opening for the BACE building. We will have a pancake fly-in breakfast and Young Eagles flights as a part of the festivities. Help Needed! Wayne Sargent has agreed to lead up our pancake breakfast effort, and is looking for gas grills/ griddles that can be brought to BACE for the event.! The second phase, getting the workspace equipped with tools and a project to work on, starts now!! BACE received a nice donation of a shop vacuum, various tools and extension cords from Dave Bohl. And also a spiffy drill press from Ryan LaPointe. Thanks so much for supporting us! Ryan LaPointe Dave Bohl
This month's speaker About Ron Wanttaja I'm a Systems Engineer, engaged in satellite orbit/constellation design and analysis, launch vehicle and onboard propulsion system trades, and operations concepts for space systems. I worked on the early design studies for the International Space Station. Back in my Air Force days, I was an on-duty operator for the Defense Support Program missile early-warning satellite. In the meantime, I've done a few odd things...i'm the author of the old "IFR Flight Simulator" program for the Commodore VIC-20 and C-64 (Click here for a writeup on how it came about), I used to run the only submarine in North Dakota, and I'm a former Cadet Colonel in the Civil Air Patrol.Oh, and I also occasionally speak to writer's groups and schools about what it was like to live aboard the sailing ships of the early 19th century..i'm also a freelance aviation journalist. I've written for a number of magazines, including PRIVATE PILOT, FLYING, SPORT AVIATION, FLIGHT LINE, FLANEWS, and KITPLANES. I write mostly for KITPLANES, mainly because they treat freelancers very, very well. Note, though, that I have no official connection with the magazine...i'm a private individual who takes occasional assignments from them and/or submits articles on speculation. As a freelancer, I highly recommend KITPLANES as a good place to submit.finally, I write books. Currently, I am writing a series of historical novels set in the U.S. Navy during the War of The first of the series, The Key to Honor, came out in early Other books include Kitplane Construction and Airplane Ownership, both non-fiction.my writing has brought me several awards, including the FLYING Magazine "Bax Seat Trophy" and a journalism award from the Aviation/Space Writer's Association.
All the news Chapter 406 Peninsula Composite Squadron Bremerton Aviation Center for Education (BACE) Grand Opening Saturday, April 28 Mission: Develop a facility that will introduce people to the incredible world of aviation through the development of hands-on skills in aircraft design, maintenance, manufacturing, and engineering. Background: The Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA) has introduced over 2 million young people to aviation through its Young Eagles program. BACE seeks to expand on this accomplishment by creating a facility where people of all ages can come and learn skills valuable in today's economy. Airlines, aerospace companies, and the military are all worried about present and future shortages of skilled aviation employees. Let's do something about it! EAA chapter 406 and the Peninsula Composite Squadron of the Civil Air Patrol are turning the old firehouse at the Bremerton National Airport into a learning facility to benefit the people of Kitsap and Mason counties. We invite local businesses to participate by donating materials and services needed to make this a reality. For more information: find us on Facebook Bremerton Aviation Center for Education (BACE) or at
All the news Items we need help with for the April 28 th BACE grand opening 1. Line up 3 or 4 gas grills to be used for pancakes and sausage patties. Wayne Sargent, MoP (Master of Pancakes) will lead our effort and may need one or two pancake flippers. 2. Put up BACE banner on fence behind BACE building Wayne Sargent leading this effort 3. Folding chairs and tables to be set up inside BACE for pancake breakfast either use CAP chairs and tables (Jim Routt), or try to borrow chairs and tables from the Port. 4. A volunteer to take money for the pancake breakfast, and a couple of people to pour coffee, load up the plates and hand them to customers. 5. Young Eagles flight assistants to sign in and coordinate flights, and also pilots!
All the news! Schedule of upcoming events- March 28 EAA 406 first meeting in the BACE building. 6:30 food, 7:00 meeting Author and pilot Ron Wanttaja will make a presentation on the history of the Fly Baby. April 25 EAA 406 meeting at BACE final preparation for BACE grand opening April 28 BACE Grand Opening and EAA 406 Fly-in pancake breakfast fund raiser for BACE. Young Eagles event July 21 Porsche Club Olympic Peninsula meets at BACE August 25 Bremerton Airport Day EAA 406 Young Eagles event, and pancake breakfast fund-raiser for BACE
Fun stuff from the Web A California company supported by Google founder Larry Page has introduced its flying taxi concept, called Cora. They have two prototypes flying, and are now based in New Zealand. For more information and a cool video, go to: Just imagine ordering up one of these via Uber, and flying direct from KPWT to downtown Seattle in 15 minutes! It's a 2-seater, designed to be autonomous, and is all-electric with 12 lift fans and one thrusting prop.
The five year plan A five year plan for EAA 406 and BACE by Mike Friend and Joel Mapes It's a good time to put forward a plan on the future direction for EAA Chapter 406 and for BACE, the Bremerton Aviation Center for Education. I suggest that we can use this plan for discussions at the general meeting on the direction for us to go. A high level summary: Year 1 use the BACE opening to increase the EAA 406 membership, and start building the first airplane project with chapter mentors and a small group of middle school kids. Start an EAA VMC Club at BACE. Build a funding base. Year 2 Use BACE for a series of general interest weekend workshops, such as "rebuilding a Rotax 912 engine" or "SportAir Workshop on sheet metal construction" Complete our first kit aircraft. Year 3 Establish a "Rainbirds Flying Club LLC" to take over operation of BACE-built aircraft once they are complete for Young Eagles flights, and member fun. Start the design of an EAA 406 original aircraft electric motor-glider, wing-in-ground effect craft, or??? Year 4 Have an established tempo of groups working on kit building and original design efforts. Year 5 - Complete the EAA 406 original design airplane As a starting point for this discussion, Joel put together a "five year plan" that addresses general goals and includes some ideas for fun things to do. Here it is on the next page:
The five year plan Chapter Marketing Increase Chapter awareness at our airport Increase Chapter awareness in our community Increase visibility with Port, County and State officials Chapter Activities Burger burns & Open house Young Eagle Rallies Airplane Building & Maintenance Encourage & support building at the Chapter level Share building skills with community Flight Safety Establish a VMC Club Host FAAST Seminars Chapter Fundraising BACE facilities BACE project Pancake breakfasts Burger burns Project sales
