2 What does it take for an individual to get their private pilots license? To be eligible for a private pilot certificate, a person must: a) Be at least 17 years of age at the time of flight testing b) Be at least 16 years of age when eligible to solo c) You must be trained by an FAA Certified Flight Instructor d) You must pass a written examination by taking ground school and or performing home study e) You must pass flight test and meet certain Aeronautical Experience Requirements Ten reasons why we think Air Associates is your best choice for flight training? 1. A person who applies for a private pilot certificate with an airplane category and single-engine class rating must log at least 40 hours of flight time that includes at least 20 hours of flight training from an authorized instructor and 10 hours of solo flight. The flight training must include: a) 3 hours of cross-country flight training in a singleengine airplane b) 3 hours of night flight training in a single-engine airplane that includesone cross-country flight of over 100 nautical i. miles total distance; and ii. 10 takeoffs and 10 landings to a full stop (with each landing involving a flight in the traffic pattern) at an airport c) 3 hours of flight by reference to instruments d) 10 hours of solo flight time in a single-engine airplane, consisting of at least i. 5 hours of solo cross-country time ii. One solo cross-country flight of at least 150 nautical miles total distance, with full-stop landings at a minimum of three points, and one segment of the flight consisting of a straight-line distance of at least 50 nautical miles between the takeoff and landing locations; and iii. Three takeoffs and three landings to a full stop (with each landing involving a flight in the traffic pattern) at an airport with an operating control tower How long does it take to get a license & how frequent are the lessons? Lesson time can be structured to meet any busy person s schedule; however, we recommend flying at least twice per week. The average license can be obtained anywhere from 4 to 7 months. You should be aware that at times weather can interfere with a normal training schedule. What are the costs? Costs can vary depending upon the motivation of the student, study habits, flying ability and the frequency devoted to flight lessons. The following items are typically part of the normal costs: a) hours of aircraft rental b) hours of flight instruction c) CPC pilot Training materials d) Flight Testing fee e) FAA Written Examination Fee f) FAA Physical Examination Total cost varies. 4 Sport Pilot Certification Data Sheet 1) Why get my Sport Pilot license? The sport pilot license is a great option for individuals looking to fly without having to pass an FAA medical exam, since the only thing required to fly light sport is a valid US driver s license. Many students start out flying light sport to help offset costs, since the first hours are the same for both the Sport and Private pilot training programs. 2) What does it take for an individual to get their sport pilot license? To be eligible for a sport pilot certificate, a person must: (a) Be at least 17 years of age (16 if you are applying for a glider or balloon) (b) You must be trained by an FAA Certified Flight Instructor (c) You must pass an FAA written examination by taking ground school and or performing home study with respect to required Aeronautical Knowledge Areas. (e) You must pass an aeronautical flight test and meet certain Aeronautical Experience Requirements 2) What is meant by Aeronautical Knowledge? (a) Applicable regulations of this chapter that relate to sport pilot privileges, limits, and flight operations. (b) Accident reporting requirements of the National Transportation Safety Board. (c) Use of the applicable portions of the aeronautical information manual and FAA advisory circulars. (d) Use of aeronautical charts for VFR navigation using pilotage, dead reckoning, and navigation systems, as appropriate. (e) Recognition of critical weather situations from the ground and in flight, windshear avoidance, and the procurement and use of aeronautical weather reports and forecasts. (f) Safe and efficient operation of aircraft, including collision avoidance, and recognition and avoidance of wake turbulence. (g) Effects of density altitude on takeoff and climb performance. (h) Weight and balance computations. (i) Principles of aerodynamics, power-plants, and aircraft systems. (j) Stall awareness, spin entry, spins, and spin recovery techniques, as applicable. (k) Aeronautical decision making and risk management. (l) Preflight actions that include-- (1) How to get information on runway lengths at airports of intended use, data on takeoff and landing distances, weather reports and forecasts, and fuel requirements; and (2) How to plan for alternatives if the planned flight cannot be completed or if you encounter delays. 3) What is meant by Aeronautical Experience Requirements? A person who applies for a Airplane category and single-engine land or sea class privileges, must log at least 20 hours of flight time, including at least 15 hours of flight training from an authorized instructor in a single-engine airplane and at least 5 hours of solo flight training in the areas of operation listed in FAR The flight training must include: (i) 2 hours of cross-country flight training, (ii) 10 takeoffs and landings to a full stop (with each landing involving a flight in the traffic pattern) at an airport, (iii) One solo cross-country flight of at least 75 nautical miles total distance, with a full-stop landing at a minimum of two points and one segment of the flight consisting of a straight-line distance of at least 25 nautical miles between the takeoff and landing locations, and (iv) 2 hours of flight training with an authorized instructor on those areas of operation specified in in preparation for the practical test within the preceding 2 calendar months from the month of the test. 4) How long does it take to get a license & how frequent are the lessons? Lesson timing and structure can be tailored to meet any schedule; however, we recommend flying at least twice per week. The average license can be obtained anywhere from 3 to 5 months. 5) What are the costs?
