2 Items Discussed at the January 21 Meeting The meeting was called to order by VP Mike Zaidlicz at 4:30 p.m. Present: Mike Zaidlicz, Mary Wallgren, Gene Soper, Gretchen Roth, Jerry Rose, Allen Peterson, Mike Kostur, Steve Koepl, Darrel Kisler, Rod Genter, Joan Genter, Murdo Cameron, Charlie Branch. Previous Minutes were approved as published. Treasurer's Report: $2435; and made a list of members with dues owing. Dues are by calendar year. Cd'AAA Meeting place Public Library, 8385 N. Gov't. Way Hayden, ID Election of Officers and Directors will be held in February or March. Murdo plans to step down for new blood and remain coordinator for Collings Foundation and CAF-Arizona Wing visits. The most important thing for the new president: Keep the organization together. Projects are something different. Jon Hubof Panhandle Helicopter Bruce Jones Liz Jones Mark Collins Joan Genter reported on last week's AAB meeting, which welcomed Sean Metts and Sholeh Patrick as new members, Jim Thorpe as chairman (John Adams to assist), and that a couple companies are looking into providing scheduled air service from COE. Airport security is everyone's responsibility Old Business: **Mary Wallgren presented the full-color drawing of the Visitor Center. The subcommittee will present this illustration and the PowerPoint presentation at next month's Airport Advisory Board meeting. **M/Jerry Rose, S/Joan Genter, V/Unanimous to set member dues at $25 for one year, $40 for two years, and $50 for three years. After further deliberation, this was modified to $25 for one year; $45 for two years; $65 for three years. ** Jerry Rose and Allen will look into changing the meeting place to the Hayden Library meeting room. Jerry Rose announced that the plane has been sold; a tug and six ANR headsets are for sale. Having no further business, we adjourned at 5:16 p.m. New and Renewing Members The Cd'AAA would like to facilitate the hangar owners and renters in being pro active about preventing trouble at the airport. 3 Here and There World War II in Australia books: Dr. Tom Lewis documents the March 1942 Japanese air raids on Broome, Western Australia. Did you know that Douglas built a few DC-5 airplanes, which played a part in the evacuation of Burma and Java (Netherlands East Indies, now Indonesia)? Other than the 03 March 1942 devastating raid on Broome, the small fleet of long ranging Japanese bombers inflicted little damage, but prompted the Allies to place their forces elsewhere, and plan a scorched earth policy in the event of a Japanese landing. The Japanese submarine I-124 is now protected as a war grave memorial outside Darwin's harbor. It was the flagship of the Japanese Navy's Sixth Submarine Squadron, which was comprised of four mine-laying submarines built from the German U-125, which was one of seven German submarines provided to Japan as part of World War I reparations. The author debunks a number of myths and provides a well-researched account of the commanders and the forces involved in the submarine warfare off NW Australia. The Japanese crews were well-trained and courageous, but ill-used, as the submarine forces were generally used in resupply of ground forces, rescue of downed airmen, and a myriad of other tasks, rather than concentrating on the anti-shipping role. Attempts at salvaging the wreck, with some violent confrontation between (unsuccessful) salvors through the 1970s, prompted both governments to protect the wreck site as a memorial to remain undisturbed. Osprey Combat Aircraft 94: US Marine Corps F-4 Phantom II Units of the Vietnam War, features 30 color aircraft profiles by artist Jim Laurier, with author Peter Davies including oral history from a number of pilots, RIOs and others. John Trotti, author of the best book on flying the F-4 Phantom II, Phantom Over Vietnam, is among the contributors to this reference. At the beginning of the year (1967) the Marine Corps had 21 of its 36 battalions, 14 of its 33 fixed-wing squadrons and half of its 24 helicopter units in Vietnam a much higher proportion than for any other US service. The Helio Courier Ultra C/STOL Aircraft: An Illustrated Developmental History ( ROWE at Hayden Library) notes on page 54 that following the outbreak of the Korean War, the U.S. Government unwittingly changed the entire complexion of the light-plane industry. Through the Controlled Materials Plan, USAF was given the power to commandeer, in effect, the capacities of established light-plane manufacturers. Four of the seven leading companies had no choice but to take on military orders and drop their light aircraft. 4 29 January 2015 Thanks to Phil Cummings and the airport staff for the opportunity to experience this new acquisition! This Mercedes Unimog arrived last week with 384 miles and 13.8 hours on the meters. Gene Soper and others have pointed out his mad skills at getting great bargains on equipment for Kootenai County's airport, and this is no exception. Phil said that the plan is to mount a 9' adjustable V-plow on the front and a urea tank on the rear. This truck will receive new white paint and door decals in the shop before going into airport service, but for now, they're (well, Phil is) getting used to operating this rig that runs from a slow crawl to 45 miles per hour on a 6-cylinder engine that propels the beast on Michelin tires in 2-wheel High, 4-wheel High, Low and Low-Lock with 8 reverse and 8 forward speeds in each range. I was fortunate enough to ride along to make the second set of tracks climbing up the side of the gravel pit without any wheel spin. It's some comfort to know that the place where people come back to earth is in the hands of such capable operators and equipment. As the man says, Takeoffs are optional, landings are mandatory! Well maintained clear runways help...(though each airplane depends on its operator/pilot for control, too). As we climbed out, Phil quipped, It still has the new car smell! (It's up to 412 miles...) (I think it was cheaper than the 2003 Ford Focus ZX3 with 120k miles that my daughter bought this past year... ) Page 4

9 On September 16, 2014 the Coeur D Alene Airport initiated a Wildlife Hazard Assessment (WHA) to address the potential risk posed by wildlife on and near the airport. The WHA is a 12-month ecological study that must be performed in accordance with FAA guidance at Federal Aviation Regulation (FAR) Part , "Wildlife Hazard Management." This assessment will be conducted by an FAA-Qualified Wildlife Biologist that will identify wildlife activity, available habitat, and wildlife management strategies. Based on the results of the WHA study, FAA will determine whether a Wildlife Hazard Management Plan is needed for the airport. ***We would ask that if you are flying into or out of the Airport and you see some wildlife that could be hazardous to the flying public, that you please the Airport with the time and approximate location of the hazard so we can use that information in the study. Following the Airport Advisory Board meeting January 14, I asked whether there were any wildlife observations beyond those of the Yamaha YZ250. Quite a few animals pass through the airport area, so we hope to see financial assistance for perimeter fencing as a result of the study. At my previous home, the Alaska DOT manager of Cordova's airports told me that he had a bit of a battle to convince those in charge of the fencing project at PACV Cordova - Mudhole Smith Airport to install a pass-through for the moose trail... 11 Trim Tabs The City of Hayden Closes Coeur d'alene Airport! The exact date is not known at this time, but the virus has been detected. A vaccine has not yet been discovered that will stop this untimely death by strangulation of encroachment. It will be a slow agonizing death, but it is terminal. When looking at the metropolitan area from 4000 ft. AGL, Coeur d'alene is already landlocked: Post Falls and Rathdrum to the west; Lake Coeur d'alene to the south; Fernan Village to the east and Dalton Gardens and City of Hayden to the north. With the real estate developers salivating over all the agricultural land on to the north, and getting as much rezoned to high-density residential as they can, we can expect the noise and over-flight complaints to begin with all this is annexed into the City of Hayden. The multimillion dollar contribution from the Airport to the local economy will go away and the taxes will have to go up to make up the shortfall. No we are not just crying, WOLF! Don't think that this can't happen here just because of Pappy Boyington briefly passing by, because this very scenario is playing out at a much more historical airport as we stick our heads in the sand. Yes, Douglas Field, home of the Douglas World Cruiser, the DC-3, the World War II famous B-25 Billy Mitchell bomber, and all the rest of the world famous Douglas airliners, at Santa Monica, California (SMO), has just been closed by the pea brained public that bought houses that were built next to the airport fences, and then complained of the airplane noise! And no, California does not have a monopoly on stupidity; we just hear more of it because there are more of them. We need to run our airport like an industry; the way it has been run for the last twenty years. We are already sharing the site of the new sewage treatment plant being built adjacent to the airport, and the Airport tenants got a 50% sewer rate increase to help fund it!
