1 Officers/Directors Airport News Reported by Holly Forshee CdAAA President Murdo Cameron has been working with North Idaho College and Air Washington, who are involved in 11 Washington colleges, on their composite programs. A demonstration was performed at Murdo's hangar on Saturday March 19, A local fiberglass shop owner donated a mold of a c-class, hydroplane. It was cleaned up and extra support was added before Murdo and volunteers Trevor Budge and Ken Olsen cut and laid out layers of fiberglass and graphite. With everything prepared, approximately 35 guests attended to view the lay up schedule of the top half and the infusion of the bottom half of the boat. Attendees included Bert Rutan, who acquired materials for his latest project while visiting, Kassie Silvas, Director of Aerospace and Outreach (NIC), Mike Mires Dean of Professional, Technical, and Workforce Education (NIC), Rob Taylor, Dean of Technical Education (Spokane Community College), along with one of his composite instructors, Dave. While the infusion itself only took 27 minutes, everyone mingled, ate and shared ideas and thoughts for a couple of hours. It was a very pleasant and productive afternoon. Murdo has been invited to be on the Advisory Board for both NIC's and Air Washington s composite and aerospace programs. He s very excited to be involved in programs that bring aerospace industry and workforce to our area. We are also pleased to have NIC's Kassie Silvas join our CdAAA association and become the new Secretary. All other officers will remain the same. Finally, while on airport property please be on the lookout, be neighborly, and keep our airport safe. See page 2 for pictures of the demonstration at Murdo's hanger. 3 Items discussed at the March 20, 2013 Board Meeting at the Miles Coffee Cafe. Attendees: Tom Lewis, Mac McCormack, Joan Genter,Reg Bach, Gene Soper, Murdo Cameron, Charlie Branch, Allen Peterson and guests Charlie Blanford and Nina Eckberg. - Airport Watch signs, shown at right, have been approved and will be purchased by the CdAAA and will be mounted at each major entrance. - Nina Eckberg, Executive Director of Panhandle Lakes Resource Conservation & Development (RC&D) Council, Inc., could provide landscape enhancements to the viewing center. This could include large pots for annual and/or perennial plants and volunteers to plant and care for the flowers. She may be able to get plants donated as well. She also suggests that, because it can be very windy in that spot, we consider some fence slats on the north side of the area (plastic or wood that slides into the wire fence). It would block the view of the fuel station but not the runways. - We may have the NIC carpentry students help in the construction of our viewing center after July 10 as a class project. - No tour date yet from the Collings Foundation. If no date is received by our next board meeting we need to pick date for our summer event without them. The Young Eagles may come to our event if we can work out an acceptable date. Airport security is everyone's responsibility The Cd'AAA would like to facilitate the hangar owners and renters in being pro active about preventing trouble at the airport. We encourage all hanger owners and renters to place the above Emergency Contact sign in a window visible from the street. This will provide a quick way to notify the hanger owner or renter if anything unusual is noted by airport personnel or other hanger owners. We've had one meeting thus far and found there is definitely an interest. I have also received several phone calls from interested people. At our next meeting, I would like to continue our discussion on purchasing an aircraft, discuss thoughts on by-laws and forming a legal entity for the club. 7 This is a view of the porposed site for our viewing center, adjacent to the airport office???? The Whatzit mystery plane is the 1938 Dart G. It had a 29 foot wingspan, and was less than 16 feet long. You could actually hold the trailing edge of the wing with one hand and hold the leading edge of the horizontal stabilizer with the other without even stretching. It was powered by a five cylinder radial, 90 H.P. Lambert engine, it would cruise at 123 MPH, and burn about 5 gallons an hour. You just didn't want to be asleep at the controls, however, as it was real quick to do things on its own. What a blast! This airplane was designed by Al Mooney while he was part of the Mono Corp.and was called the Mooney Low Wing. Mono Corp. was made up of Don Luscomb, Clayton Folkerts and Al Mooney. When the Mono Corp. went out of business in the mid nineteen thirties, Knight Culver got the rights to the Low Wing, formed the Dart Corp.and hired Al to continue development. In 1939 the company changed its name to The Culver Aircraft Manufacturing Co. and the plane became the Culver Dart. Today we know the company as the Mooney Aircraft Co. The plane was owned and flown by Gene Soper.
