President s Message This is my first column as Chapter President after serving 8 years as Chapter Treasurer. I d like to begin by saying THANK YOU to outgoing president Don Lorenzen for resolving several hangar maintenance problems that cropped up in With both volunteer and professional help, the hangar is now in good repair. Outside vents were added to the roof, ceiling insulation was laid above the bathroom, some light fixtures were replaced, and a plumbing problem was resolved. Your newly elected Board of Directors will meet on January 7 for the purpose of planning our programs 106th Celebration of Flight Our jointly held annual EAA/MPA December 17 th Celebration of Flight, dinner, and Christmas bash was a fun affair with 28 members and guests in attendance. The food and service at the Holiday Inn Downtown were absolutely outstanding and, of course, our white elephant gift exchange provided lots of laughter. The most coveted gift was fudge. The most unusual gift was an air intake for a Stearman. Santa Claus (aka Sebastian Stan) even put in an appearance to help hand out frosted airplane-shaped cookies for dessert. A certain amount of thieving went on this year. As in past years, some members just couldn t help but covet the gifts of the other members. 2 January 2010 Prop Wash Page 2 From the Prez (cont) and meeting schedule for As soon as we have dates confirmed, our webmaster (Larye Parkins) will update the website event calendar. I will also continue to send out reminders prior to an event, so if you have a new address, please let me know. Our next regular meeting will be on Monday, January 18, at 7:00 PM in the conference room at the Missoula Airport. Local pilot and flight instructor Art Dykstra has been invited to speak about mountain flying, but he has not confirmed his schedule yet. EAA Chapter 517 will have an exhibit booth at the 2010 Montana Aviation Conference here in Missoula on March 4-6. I already have four people committed to staffing the booth, but it never hurts to have more volunteers. We will be raffling a pedal plane at this event as well as simply talking to pilots about what our Chapter has to offer in terms of education and camaraderie. We will be announcing a date very soon to complete building three pedal planes that the Chapter started several years ago. I know that 2010 will be another great year for EAA 517. Duane Shinn finds a wonderful book by Greg Brown (above left) but, in retribution for having his fudge stolen, Steve Rossiter gets caught in the act theft and takes possession (above right) of Duane s book. Overall, we had a great time, great camaraderie, good food, which the hotel even invited us to fill up our doggy bags from the buffet leftovers and take home. Some of us did! Don Lorenzen Honored Don Lorenzen was honored at the December 17 Celebration of Flight dinner for his many years of service to EAA Chapter 517 as President and Young Eagles Coordinator. Don is a two time builder and has provided much guidance and advice to other chapter members who have or are building aircraft. Builder s Report (cont) Scott Owen - RV-9-95% His airplane is to the point where it is time to accomplish the first engine run. Next will be final assembly at the Owen shop prior to relocation to his hangar at MSO. Zenith Laurens Ackerman - CH-601 Ray Aten - CH % Has relocated his project to his hangar in Missoula and is well underway in preparation for the modifications required by the factory to upgrade the wings. Terry Philips - CH-601 Steve Rossiter - CH-750 STOL - 5% As of the end of the year the horizontal stabilizer and rudder are complete with the expectation of having completed the elevator and trim tab assemblies by the time you read this.

3 January 2010 Prop Wash Emigh Trojan A-2 other aircraft of the time (Ercoupe, T-Craft, etc.). In the October 2009 issue of Prop Wash, you were challenged with a mystery airplane which turned out to be the Emigh Trojan A-2. Since then more information has been discovered which you may find of interest. The airplane was developed by Harold Emigh (pronounced Amy ) in 1946 (a very good year when I was born). It went into production in 1948 with 58 airplanes ultimately built. Like a number of aircraft of the time, further production was not possible because of the economy and the availability of surplus military aircraft. This airplane was uniquel because it featured the unusual arrangement of external ribs for the wings. The design was for an affordable airplane that anyone could own, as were many Project Updates As you have already noted, your rookie newsletter editor has attempted to kick off a regular feature in the monthly Prop Wash about member s current projects and the status thereof. It is an attempt to keep all members up to date on how our member build projects are going. Western Aviation & Automobile Museum s Emigh Trojan Trojan A-2 Page 3 This airplane had a 31'7" wingspan, a 20'5" length, and a height of 6'5". The empty weight was about 875 lbs. with a gross weight of 1450 lbs. The Trojan cruised at 115 MPH and stalled at 48 MPH. The range was about 550 miles burning 5.4 GPH. I hope you builders will keep me posted, so I can keep our members posted on your progress. Anything aircraft building or refurbishing related will be in the Builder s Report column. When you pass on your update, digital pictures are always appreciated and I will use them when I can. I apologize to our members I didn t track down for an update for this issue. I hope to get everyone included in February. To parallel this effort, I would also like to have a similar column to cover Fly Outs, both past and future. The goal is to let members know what our members have done and what they will be doing. Hopefully, we can hook up our members with available empty seats so more people can take advantage of the aviation events happening in our area. ThanX, Steve

On March 31, 2010 your paper pilot certificate becomes invalid. The FAA has been changing to the new plastic pilot certificates for several years and FAR 61.19(h) establishes the March 31, 2010 as the final deadline. Each pilot must request the issuance of the replacement certificate. This can be done online or by mail.
