1 Prop Wash Experimental Aircraft Association Chapter 517 Issue: 11/2009 Introduce a friend to the science of flying Greetings! This will be my last opening as the chapter president. It has been a pleasure to serve the chapter these two years, made easier by such a great board. My thanks to Sherry Rossiter, Ed Lovrien, Ray Aten, Gary Weyermann, Larye Parkins, and Jack Wiegman. All worked hard, and especially appreciate the very notable work publishing a great newsletter and outstanding website by Jack and Larye, respectively. Thank you all. Hangar repairs: Work & BBQ dogs for lunch. When: Sat, 11/21, start about 9am. (Griz away game) PREZ SEZ Tasks: replace 3-5 ballasts and tubes on the ceiling. Assemble 3 bookcases for our lobby library. Mark your calendar: On President Thursday, December 17, EAA Don Lorenzen 517 and MPA Five Valleys Hangar will hold the annual dinner to commemorate the 106th anniversary of powered flight by the Wright Brothers. The dinner will be held at Holiday Inn Downtown, 200 S Pattee Street, Missoula, Mt 59802, (406) beginning at 6:00 PM. Please see Really Big Meeting, Page-5. Don Seekers The good Impression worked both ways. peering, touching and discussing. 12-members of Frenchtown Boy Scout Troop 1922 descended on EAA517's Stevensville hangar under the delighted eyes of Gary Weyermann and Ray Aten for one of the year's most meaningful Young Eagles events. They were clear-eyed and straight. They moved from trucks to tarmac, to hangar, to Poitras Flight Simulators, to food and, finally, to airplanes Newly Elected Officers Your new officers have been elected: Eager to make a good impression. Inspecting everything, they moved quietly while examining, President: Sherry Rossiter Vice-President: Jim Younkin (Continued Page-3)
2 Page 2 November, 2009 Officers are quoted as saying, We believe it was driven out of the hanger and flown from the airport. This isn t just a little theft. They wanted to transport drugs or people somewhere. How Gifts Are Made The gift of learning, the thrill of teaching. Frenchtown Boy Scout Troop takes command of the stimulating simulators. EAA517's Rich Poitras Flight Simulators were the big hit of indoor activities and proved the immense desire to learn on the part of Boy Scout Young Eagles, Saturday, October 17, at the chapter hangar in Stevensville. The famed simulators occupied all of the limited free time the scouts had after breakfast and before flight. Scouts interviewed by Prop Wash showed that they had learned well. The Flight Simulators made all other points of the Young Eagles experience especially meaningful. These were not kids merely playing. They were young men learning and, even, teaching, said one observer. Here stands a new leader preparing to mount the Weyermann Aircraft. Major Theft! The Sandpoint Daily Bee newspaper of Sandpoint, ID reports that a plane that crashlanded in a clear-cut field near Granite Falls, WA is one stolen recently in Boundary County, ID. The Cessna 182 was damaged in the crash and the alleged thief escaped. The theft appears related to others including one in Creston, BC as well as to a stolen car. Studies The Montana Department of Transportation has, for years, been executing and funding studies in the matters of statewide transportation: everything from bicycles to water transport. Many of the studies seem to be ignored by print media and the public alike. Despite statewide grumbling about aviation noise and alleged safety issues, MDT produces glowing reports on General Aviation. A major exception to the ignoring-of-the-positive-sidesof-aviation paradigm comes in the Kalispell Daily Inter Lake newspaper. A recent story by John Stang, Kalispell at top in Montana Ranking, quotes an MDT report showing that the GA facility hosts 73 planes and it has a more than $10.1 million impact on Kalispell payrolls. It says that the airport's use generates $24 million in spending by businesses. The same study says that the Ravalli County Airport at Hamilton is number two in this regard with payroll impacts of $4.2 million. Similarly, consulting firm CDM wrote an MDT study of the Ravalli County Airport showing how the community might gain federal and other assistance in building financial health.
3 Page 3 November, 2009 MDT also offers the usual skills brochures and pamphlets on how to take care of airports like: Airport Turf Building and Maintenance Airstrip Turf Development Streambank Wheatgrass The Ravalli Republic newspaper of Hamilton has ignored MDT's reports on aviation's large impact to its own city and county. Publicity, promotion and journal experts note that the information is under-used in helping the public understand airport usefulness and the importance of General Aviation. Costs of such studies benefiting transportation industries are high and there is the risk that they will cease to be available if not used well and frequently. One of the theories on media's bypassing positive information on aviation is the failure of pilots to request such positive coverage. MPA Calendar Representatives from Montana Aeronautics Division, Montana Pilots' Association and Recreational Aviation Foundation are scheduling a meeting for October or November to discuss alternatives and will keep you posted. Send comments to Rocky (Newly Elected from Page-1) The new officers will take over on January 1. They serve for a two year term. The election was held Octo- ber 19, at our Annual Meet- ing in our 32S Hangar Secretary: Duane Shinn. Visitor The EAA517 PC Breakfast and tool auction brought FAA Designated Airworthiness Representative Nick Orach who inspected offerings and quizzed members about their needs. Possibly Important Nancy Kimball of Kalispell's Daily Inter Lake newspaper says opposition to expanding the Kalispell City Airport is gaining steam, with a group of south Kalispell residents alleging back-room deals and a cavalier attitude from City Hall. All comments on the newspaper's blog were negative toward General Aviation. Newspaper Concerns The Bozeman Daily Chronicle reports that Gallatin Field at Bozeman appears on a list of airports that received federal funds for projects that were alleged to be low priorities. The list comes from an activist organization that features itself a watchdog agency. What is it? From last month. It is an Emigh (pronounced A-me)Trogen. Only 56 were made. The plane featured externally ribbed wings and a 90Hp Continental engine. Steve's Project Update 162 Days to First Flight. By Steve Rossiter. Steve's Zenith CH-750 project up date: 159 Days to First Flight. The airplane shipping crate for Papa Fox (N750PF) has joined the engine on our hangar floor. It was delivered on October 29, 2009, with Gary Matson, Hank Butzel, and Frank Bretz in attendance. Airplane in a Box. Ray Atten's Zenith CH-601 build bench has had successful surgery having been spliced back together for a new life as a Zenith CH-750 build bench. Edi Stan was instrumental in helping make the bench trade out and relocation to the MSO Zenith build facility. On October 12, 2009, Sherry and I zoomed from Nashville, TN, to Mexico, MO, to tour the Zenith factory and fly the CH- 750 demonstrator. Sherry was beaming when she climbed out of the airplane as was I when I had my turn. We have made a good choice of projects. ****** CH-750 project photos by Gary Matson and Steve Rossiter.
