President s Message New Aircraft Around Missoula What started life as a British build commuter jet that looks like a baby Lockheed C-141 Starlifter has found its way to Missoula as Neptune Aviation s first all jet aerial fire fighting airtanker. This would be British Aerospace BAE 146. Builder s Report Co-Z Hank Butzel - Cozy Mark IV - 5% Glasair Allen Burruss - FT S-II - 90% Will be moved to Stevi hangar this month. Piper Exp. In spite of not making it to Oshkosh, this has been a great summer for me personally and I hope it has for you as well. I did order the 2010 AirVenture DVD, however, and I m happy to share it with anyone who wants to view it. The EAA Chapter 517 Board of Directors held their quarterly Board meeting on August 19. The Chapter is in good shape financially and the Board voted to make a $5,000 principal payment on our hangar mortgage. That should bring our hangar mortgage down to approximately $34,000. 2 September 2010 Prop Wash Prez S ez (Con t) The Board also directed me to review our Chapter Bylaws and submit a rough draft of any sections that may need to be updated or revised to reflect current Chapter circumstances. I will plan to have a rough draft available for review sometime in September. Our September meeting will be on Monday, September 20, Peter Graf, who has been an active member of the Civil Air Patrol for many years as well as an airline pilot, will be talking to us about changes in ELT regulations and operations and how this is impacting search and rescue activities. Pete s presentation is certainly one that should be of interest to all pilots. Over the summer I have been following the progress of a pilot named Michael Combs in a Remos LSA who plans to land in all 50 stages to promote sport aviation. According to one of his website s at he should be stopping in Missoula right around Labor Day. His project is called Flight of the Human Spirit and his story is quite interesting. Until next month... Sherry New Airtanker (cont) airtanker to replace the older 1950s vintage aircraft that are currently being used. The BAE-146 is equipped with a 3,000 gallon retardant tank using a pressurized release system. Last month this airplane could be seen dropping loads on the Missoula International Airport to test the quality and quantity of the retardant drop pattern. Expect to see much more of this airplane in the future. Firewall forward kit has arrived except for the propellor. Live simply, love generously, care deeply, speak kindly, and leave the rest to God. Neptune Aviation s Tanker 40 Good judgement comes from experience. Too much experience comes from exercising bad judgement. Live a good and honorable life; then when you get older and think back, you ll enjoy it a second time. Timing has a lot to do with the outcome of a rain dance.

3 September 2010 Prop Wash Breakfast At The Airport On September 18, 2010, we will have our last Breakfast at the Airport for Attendance this year has been minimal with only people at each breakfast. Perhaps it is time to review the purpose of the breakfasts. Originally, we started the breakfasts to help pay our hangar mortgage and to provide a venue where our members could get to know one another and share flying stories. Fortunately, because of other steady sources of revenue, we no longer need to conduct the breakfast as a fundraising activity. The EAA 517 Board has discussed several times how we might better utilize our hangar for various events and one idea is to switch to a donuts, coffee, and juice format at least once each month and encourage parents in the community to bring their children to the hangar to use the flight simulators and talk to and learn from our member pilots and builders. The Board would like input from our members regarding continuing the breakfasts, so this topic will be on the agenda for the Annual Meeting in October. Page 3 Russian Flat Airstrip Opened Forty volunteer pilots, families, and guests put the final touches on Montana s newest public back country airstrip in August at Russian Flat in the Lewis and Clark National Forest. This recreational airstrip was created through the cooperation of the MPA, USFS, and Recreational Aviation Foundation. MPA President and EAA517 member Wade Cebulski said, This is a precedent setting event. USFS Ranger Ron Wiseman said, We appreciate the high level of cooperation from all different aspects of the pilots. Russian Flat (N 46 43' 28.24" W ' 41.07") is at approximately 6,400 feet elevation and is approximately 3,000 feet long. Bring your own tie downs and park inside the corral.this would be the corral to keep cattle away from your airplane. It is recommended that you land uphill to the west and takeoff to the east, conditions permitting. CTAF: You are requested to practice no trace camping; no fire rings; portable fire pit.
