1 EAA CHAPTER 119 FLIGHTLINE EAA Chapter 119, 60 Aviation Way, Watsonville Airport, Watsonville CA December 2009 Everybody wants to be seen, to avoid accidental collisions, to make sure that other pilots notice their plane. Hopefully even geese might notice the plane. So far, most airplanes have a visual collision systems, strobes, position lights, taxi and landing lights. However, as most people who go to air shows can attest, a smoke system really attracts attention. Sean Farrell installed a smoke system from Smoking Airplanes ( The setup is complete and very well laid out. Each of the wires is labeled telling what the wire is connected to. They have two basic systems, one with a 3.5 Do You Have a Smoking Section? Installing a smoke system on an RV-7A Smoke on take-off gallon and one with a 5.5 gallon tank. The 3.5 gallon tank is good for about 5 minutes of continuous smoke, and is the system Sean installed in his RV-7a. A single line goes from the tank, located in the baggage compartment, to the firewall and then the line splits to each exhaust. Both exhaust pipes were tapped for injectors so there would be a continuous smoke trail, rather than one with pulses. All together it took about 8 hours to finish. There were plenty of people around to help offer advice and scratch the ears of the largest dog on the airport. Around 5:00 PM local time, Sean was able to test out his system in the air. Against the evening sky, it certainly was visible. Perhaps even visible to any local passing geese.

I hope you think so as well. We had a very good last Young Eagles rally for the year with over 75 kids flown on a very nice day. Thanks to all the volunteers and helpers for the time and effort to make this a highly successful and safe year. We have over 4500 rides flown and that is without all of the October and November numbers. It is probably over 4600 when all of the years inputs are in. We have had some changes this year, WiFi in the hangar, a disaster plan in the works, new members, people in new positions (thanks for your service Thad and Neil! Thanks for stepping up Chris!) and an airport doing well despite the recession. Some EAA119 business since there won t be much business done at the holiday potluck party on 1 December. I ve invited the 99s and WPA membership, the airport staff, and just about anyone I bump into. It should be fun. The welding station is still in limbo, Victor Perino is going to check with the city to see what it takes to get the welding permit. The city won t sign off the loft without the permit or with the equipment removed. The EAA B-17 Aluminum Overcast is now scheduled to be at WVI from 3 May to 6 May, giving tours and rides on the 4th and 5th. EAA119 is the host and we have to get some people assigned as POCs for the EAA crew to make the visit run well. Anyone from last time it was here want to volunteer? The next stop is Napa and they said 6 seats will be available to the chapter for that flight. Sounds like incentive. I bought a ride on the Collins B-17 a few years ago and it was really worth it. Neil Brooks has decided to step down from Secretary and Membership and we need a replacement. Any takers? Or will I have to get John Davi to twist some arms? How do you think I got where I am? EAA is going to have ELSA Airplane Repair-Inspection course in our hangar from 15 through 17 January They agreed to provide one position for our membership in return for use of the hangar, so those interested please contact myself or a board member for consideration. A well-received suggestion from the last chapter meeting by Rob Wyland is to set up a Fly Share where chapter members (some who cannot fly anymore themselves) can express a desire for a ride or offer rides. This is intended primarily for chapter members and not to be a burden on anyone. How to do this hasn t evolved yet, maybe the Open Hangar I held on the 21st will be a start. It is a good idea having a hard start; it may be as simple as posting messages on the hangar office door or something. The people able to give rides need to be proactive in offering since I myself would have a hard time asking for one. For next year besides Aluminum Overcast coming early in May, we have Day in the Sky in April again, the Airshow has moved to September 3-5, and EAA62 in San Jose is going to have a bigger and better Moffett Young Eagles event on 29 May. This time they will be combining with the Collins Foundation B-17/B-24/B-25/P-51C visit to Moffett along with a STEM (Science/Tech/Engr/ Match) festival. If you are interested, please let me or others on the board know. There won t be an election since it is out of cycle and the position will be up for vote at the end of Tom Hail CHAPTER SECRETARY RESPONSIBILITIES Complete the annual National EAA census form. Including the newly elected officers/or current officers. Complete the Insurance and Chapter renewal forms. Include the known upcoming events for the year. (Event Form) Complete the Event form for the Pancake Breakfast and Hot Dog stand functions for the Airshow. This requires a separate Event Form. This can be completed at a later date. Be sure to send it in well in advance of the Fly-In as the insurance application takes a lot of time. I would suggest sending it during the month of February when the event dates are known. Record the Minutes of the monthly Chapter meeting. Forward a copy of the minutes to the Newsletter Editor for inclusion in the Newsletter. The Chapter Office requests that the monthly meeting minutes be forwarded to the Chapter Office. Therefore, we send the Chapter Office a copy of our newsletter. Record minutes of the Board of Directors meeting. Print the minutes and place in the notebook in the office. It looked like a very nice day and there were plenty of pilots, planes, and volunteers. Good job everyone! I wish I could have stayed. This was the last rally of the year and by my count we have over 4500 total kids flown, Doug Glass may have gone over the 300 mark. Rallies start up again in May, just after Day in the Sky and just before the B-17 Aluminum Overcast comes to WVI on May 3rd. :-) More to come on that! 5 PAGE 5 EAA CHAPTER 119, 60 AVIATION WAY, WATSONVILLE AIRPORT Wright NW-2 (A-6544) The sesquiplane NW-1, flown by Lt. Sanderson (USMC) in 1922, was modified to this standard biplane configuration for the 1923 Schneider Cup Race. Unfortunately it did not get to fly in the race because a broken propeller blade tore one of its floats during flight trials in England. It was powered by the big Wright Tornado engine of 750 hp. Note the wing-skin cooling radiators on the top and bottom surfaces of both wings. LT Al Williams placed first in an R2C-1 in the 1923 Pulitzer Race, held in October as a part of the National Air Races at St. Louis, with a speed of mph.the second R2C-1, flown by LT Brow, placed second at mph. The two Wright F2W-1 s placed third and fourth at 230 U. S. Navy mph, with the Army Curtiss Racers finishing fifth and sixth. Following the St. Louis races the Navy withdrew from racing, except for the Schneider Cup Race, due to lack of funds. A great deal of useful information was gained from these races, particularly in regard to increased horse power, new types of fuels, engine cooling and high speed control problems. Although November 1926 marked the end of the Navy s participation in the Schneider Race one R3C-4 remained through From February 1928, until it was surveyed in November, it was designated XR3C-4.
